VICTORVILLE, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A second earthquake was recorded early Easter Sunday in the Victorville area, just hours after a magnitude 2.6 quake shook neighborhoods in the Victor Valley late Saturday night.

The more recent tremor, initially reported as a magnitude 1.94, occurred at 12:49 a.m. on Sunday, April 20, 2025. Based on mobile seismic data, the epicenter was located 2 miles north-northeast of Mountain View Acres, near Mojave Drive, between El Evado and Amargosa Roads, at a depth of approximately 5.2 miles.

The coordinates (34.529°N, 117.339°W) place the quake near Zion Lutheran Church, located at 15342 Jeraldo Drive in Victorville.

The smaller quake may have been an aftershock to the earlier 2.6-magnitude earthquake that struck at 10:50 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the same location, at a depth of approximately 5.6 miles. That initial event remains listed on the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Map.

Residents across Victorville reported feeling both quakes. In the Victor Valley 411 Facebook group, one person wrote, “That one hit hard!” Another said, “I thought I was dreaming but I wasn’t,” while another commented, “Felt it in Eagle Ranch area.”

No injuries or property damage have been reported.

As of Sunday afternoon, the 1.94-magnitude Easter quake is no longer listed on the USGS website. According to the agency, some preliminary events are later reviewed and occasionally removed due to erroneous or overlapping seismic data.

“Occasionally our systems produce erroneous information that is released to the public… These mistakes are generally promptly identified by seismologists, removed from our web pages,” the USGS explains.

Residents who experienced shaking are encouraged to submit a report through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” tool to assist with seismic tracking.

This is a developing story. Stay with VVNG.com for ongoing coverage.

White House administration changes often mean a wave of changes in the economy, housing, employment and other sectors.

This year’s 12th annual High Desert Economic and Real Estate Symposium & Forecast will explain how new leadership and other factors will affect the global, national, state and High Desert landscapes.

Hosted by Coldwell Banker Commercial, the event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 20, at the Victor Valley College Performing Arts Center in Victorville.

Broker and President of Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate Solutions Jason Lamoreaux will moderate the symposium.

Let's talk economy

During the event, economist Dr. Chris Thornberg will return to present the "Economic Review and Forecast."

In 2007, Thornberg founded Beacon Economics, the firm that made a name for itself by correctly predicting the collapse of the subprime real estate bubble and the following global recession.

Additionally, keynote speaker Dan Spiegel, managing director of Coldwell Banker Commercial Worldwide, will share his expertise.

Spiegel leads the Coldwell Banker Commercial network of over 2,000 commercial real estate professionals in markets large and small in North America and worldwide.

Broker and owner of Coldwell Banker Home Source Chris Lamoreaux will present the state and regional housing market historical review and forecast.

High Desert project chat

President of Coldwell Banker Affiliates for Coldwell Banker Real Estate Jason Waugh will be among several community panel speakers at the symposium that will discuss new train projects, and a master-planned community.

Silverwood Master Plan General Manager John Ohanian will share an update on the construction of Phase 1 of the new community in the Summit Valley area of Hesperia.

Model homes in Phase 1 of Silverwood are tentatively scheduled to open in spring 2025, the beginning of bringing more than 2,000 homes to the new neighborhood.

Phase 1 broke ground in December 2021. It includes houses, condos, and flats.

Phase 1, located south of Ranchero Road near I Avenue, is considered the northern portion of the new development that will be built in nine phases over the next 20 years, Ohanian told the Daily Press.

Formerly known as Tapestry, the Silverwood project spans 9,366 acres and includes nearly 15,633 dwelling units at completion.

The project will also include 700,00 square feet of commercial space, nearly 5,000 acres of open space, 387 acres of parks, and 107 miles of paths and trails.

Silverwood will include a library, post office, fire stations, public schools, and walkable town squares with stores.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway’s Executive Director of Public Affairs Lena Kent will share insight on the progress of the planned $1.5 billion Barstow International Gateway project.

Situated on nearly 4,500 acres west of Barstow, the integrated rail facility would transfer goods from international to domestic containers and create roughly 20,000 new jobs while helping to address logistics and supply chain issues.

The Bureau of Land Management announced in January the approval of a noncompetitive sale of public lands in San Bernardino County to BNSF.

The nearly 30-acre land purchase will be used for the planned railway project that is expected to positively impact the economies of Barstow and the High Desert.

Brightline West Director of Public Affairs Antonio Castelan will speak on the company’s first high-speed rail project in the nation, which promises passengers a 200 mph trip between Las Vegas and Southern California.

The Brightline West project will include a flagship station in Las Vegas and additional stations in Southern California — Apple Valley, Hesperia and Rancho Cucamonga.

Brightline officials for years have announced the soon construction of the 218-mile route by all-electric rail trains that was expected to be completed in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

In April 2024, Brightline West officials and guests gathered in Las Vegas as part of the high-speed rail project’s groundbreaking celebration.

Since then, the company has conducted field investigation work in Southern California and Nevada within the proposed rail corridor within Interstate 15 right-of-way.

Brightline West officials seek to raise $2.5 billion through a bond offering for the planned $12.4 billion high-speed rail line.

Work to construct the rail line and stations in both states is expected to begin early this year, with an expected completion date of December 2028, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

City manager panel

City and town managers from Apple Valley, Adelanto, Hesperia and Victorville are expected to share updates on their respective municipalities.

The state of the High Desert real estate market will be presented by Coldwell Banker Commercial leaders Executive Vice President Bob Basen, and Vice President of Commercial Investments Jerrad Schendel.

Over the last year, many residents have contacted the Daily Press about the vacant Bank of America building at the busy corner of Bear Valley and Hesperia roads in Victorville.

Since the bank closed nearly 18 months ago, the almost 6,000-square-foot building in the Hi-Desert Plaza has been cleaned, remodeled and listed for sale.

High Desert resident Carolyn Reno, who drives by the building nearly daily, said she’s often wondered about the empty building.

“About a year ago, I saw people remodeling the building and thinking the bank would reopen,” Reno said. “After reading the paper, I found out that bank locations were being closed across the country, that’s when I figured it was the end of that Bank of America.”

With a current price tag of $2.9 million, the vacant building was part of the construction of the plaza in 1987, which included Vons grocery as the anchor store.

The plaza now includes numerous businesses, including Jack in the Box, Goodwill, Los Pollos Bros, Grocery Outlet and Community Bingo Hall.

Paul Casilla, broker associate at Lee & Associates, told the Daily Press that he’s fielded many calls about the property and conducted a few tours, with a possible offer coming this week.

Casilla added that the building may be used for a bank, credit union, financial services office, mortgage brokerage, legal firm, dental office, medical facility, real estate office, jewelry store, bicycle retail shop, motorcycle sales showroom, or any other retail/office use.

Bank closures

Since 2020, the closure of Bank America sites was part of the permanent and temporary closing of branches around the U.S., largely due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and staff shortages, economic experts said.

In 2022, Bank of America officials confirmed the soon shuttering of its financial center on Highway 18 in the Village of Apple Valley.

At that time, Bank of America spokeswoman Colleen Haggerty told the Daily Press the bank would permanently close on Aug. 16, 2022.

"Given BofA already has a remote ATM nearby the Apple Valley location, the ATMs there will not remain after the closing date,” she said.

Haggerty added that the Village location had been temporarily closed for the past five months to consolidate resources and staff.

During that time, customers migrated to several other High Desert Bank of America financial centers in Apple Valley, Victorville, Hesperia and Adelanto, she said.
