Syracuse, N.Y. — We are 16 days into men’s basketball transfer portal activity 2025 and already, Syracuse’s team is taking shape.

The Orange now has 10 players on the roster. SU likely will add a couple more guys. Another wing scorer, maybe another big guy? We’ll see.

Right now, websites that rank college basketball players, transfers and teams are busily updating those rankings. We’ve cobbled together a few interesting comparisons for the fun of it.

Bear in mind that these rankings change frequently as players enter the portal. For this story, rankings were current as of late Tuesdayafternoon.

Why portal players are ranked the way they’re ranked illustrates the folly of relying too much on these databases. For instance, former Syracuse guard Elijah Moore is ranked 112th by 247sports.com, 483rd by Evan Miyakawa and 194th by On3.com. That’s quite a range.

The value of each player in the portal is obviously determined by the teams that recruit them to their programs and the amount of money they’re willing to pay them.

With that being said, we’re offering a few charts on transfers that have left Syracuse, transfers that have committed to Syracuse and transfers that committed to SU last portal season.

Right now, no guys who played at SU in 2024-25 have committed to new schools. SU has commitments from four guys: point guard Nait George (who is listed as a shooting guard at On3), wing Nate Kingz, center William Kyle and center Ibrahim Souare.

The Trump administration has frozen more than $1 billion in federal funding for a Central New York college, the White House announced late Tuesday.

The Associated Press reports grant money was pulled from Cornell University as part of a larger effort to get major academic institutions to comply with President Donald Trump’s political agenda. The Trump administration similarly halted $790 million for Northwestern University, claiming it was investigating alleged civil rights violations at both schools.

Cornell, an Ivy League school located in Ithaca, N.Y., said it had not received information confirming $1 billion in frozen grants, but did say it received more than 75 stop work orders earlier Tuesday from the U.S. Defense Department related to research “profoundly significant to American national defense, cybersecurity, and health.”

“We are actively seeking information from federal officials to learn more about the basis for these decisions,” Cornell University President Michael I. Kotlikoff said in a statement with other top school officials.

According to the AP, the U.S. Education Department warned Cornell, Northwestern and more than 60 other schools of “potential enforcement actions if they do not fulfill their obligations” under federal law to “protect Jewish students on campus, including uninterrupted access to campus facilities and educational opportunities.” The Trump administration claimed the colleges alleged antisemitism to go unchecked at campus protests last year over Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza.

The Trump administration previously cut off $400 million in federal funding and grants for Columbia University, demanding changes in university policy. Columbia agreed last month to overhaul its rules for protests and student discipline, plus adopt a new definition of antisemitism, sparking concerns about free speech and fascism.

Momodou Taal, a Cornell University graduate student who sued the Trump administration and was threatened with deportation, announced last week that he had voluntarily left the United States. A federal judge in Syracuse had rejected an effort by Taal to get an injunction against executive orders from Trump that Taal said were being used to deport him for attending pro-Palestinian protests.

“Given what we have seen across the United States, I have lost faith that a favorable ruling from the courts would guarantee my personal safety and ability to express my beliefs. I have lost faith I could walk the streets without being abducted. Weighing upon these options, I took the decision to leave on my own terms,” Taal said.

Cornell described itself Tuesday as a land-grant university that serves New York state and the nation.

“The university has worked diligently to create an environment where all individuals and viewpoints are protected and respected,” Kotlikoff said. “We are committed to working with our federal partners to continue the contributions made by our scientists and scholars.”
