Cortland, N.Y. — One of New York state’s oldest newspapers that suddenly closed in March is being revived after it was bought out of bankruptcy court.

The Cortland Standard, a 157-year-old publication, shut its doors on March 13 and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

The closure was announced in a front-page article with the headline: “Goodbye Cortland and Godspeed.”

Sample News Group, a privately held publishing company based in Huntingdon, Pa., announced Wednesday it had acquired all the assets of the Cortland Standard Printing Company. The paper will resume publication on May 17.

The purchase price proposed in a letter of intent filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court is $50,000. The sale doesn’t include the newspaper’s press, according to the letter.

The letter doesn’t mention the newspaper’s building at 110 Main St. It’s assessed at $850,000, according to county records.

“Cortland deserves the opportunity to stay informed and engaged through a vibrant local newspaper,” George Sample, owner of Sample News Group, said in a news release. “We look forward to ensuring that the thriving community of Cortland does not turn into a news desert.”

The company has more than 75 newspapers, news sites and other publications in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The Cortland Standard will be added to Sample’s Oswego County Media Group, which includes The Palladium-Times, The Valley News, The Oswego Shopper and the Oswego County News.

Mindy Lawrence, former advertising & marketing director of the Cortland Standard, will serve as publisher of the Oswego County Media Group.

Lawrence said that Sample News Group began discussions on how to “return this important community institution to the public” days after the closure was announced.

The Cortland Standard’s first edition was written and printed from a flatbed press on June 25, 1867. It featured several pieces, including a recipe for spring peas, a profile of Civil War generals, a plea against smoking and a poem called “An Ode to Otter Creek,” according to the paper.

In 1876, William H. Clark bought the Cortland Standard. The paper was moved into a building at 110 Main St. in 1883, where it has operated since.

Evan C. Geibel took over the paper in 2017.

The paper was the second-oldest family-owned newspaper in New York and one of the five oldest family-owned newspapers in America, the article announcing the closure said.
