South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden announced Friday he’s seeking nominations for a new lawmaker to represent District 1 in northeastern South Dakota after Rep. Chris Reder, R-Warner, resigned Thursday.

District 1 includes areas in Brown, Day, Marshall and Roberts counties. Reder was elected to his first term last November and served during the 2025 legislative session. He is a Navy veteran and sat on the House Military and Veterans Affairs, Taxation and Transportation committees.

The two bills he introduced, one of which was signed into law by Rhoden, related to military members and veteran benefits. The new law allows non-South Dakota residents who are veterans to purchase three-day temporary nonresident waterfowl licenses in the state.

Reder announced his resignation through social media on Thursday due to “personal and professional reasons.”

He had faced questions in the news media and on political blogs about his residency status, but did not address that in his resignation announcement.

Another legislative seat opened recently in District 22, which includes areas in Beadle, Spink and Clark counties, when Rhoden selected Sen. David Wheeler, R-Huron, to become a judge. Rhoden will make appointments for the open seats.

They most certainly have. USD has welcomed in eight additions from the portal, and also announced this week that Sioux Falls Washington High School standout Grace Peterson would be joining the program in the Fall as well.

South Dakota head women's basketball coach Carrie Eighmey is pleased to announce the addition of Grace Peterson to the 2025 signing class.

Peterson is a 6-0 forward from Sioux Falls. She wrapped up her senior season at Washington High School with a South Dakota Class AA all-tournament nod and her third all-state honor of her career.

In 93 varsity games, she recorded 891 points, 429 rebounds, and 99 assists. She was a three-year starter and four-year letter winners at Washington, receiving all-state honors in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

She was the 2025 Class AA Spirit of Su honoree, given to an outstanding senior who shines in athletic ability, leadership, character, sportsmanship, and academics.

Your driving experience is about to change in downtown Sioux Falls starting today.

Two big changes go into effect for motorists beginning Thursday, (May 1).

The first is the new parking ordinance for extended-length vehicles on Phillips Avenue.

These types of vehicles can no longer extend into the drive lane of Phillips Avenue in the downtown district of Sioux Falls. According to Dakota News Now, this change is expected to affect about 140 parking spots in downtown.

Parking will be available on one of the many side streets or at one of the ramps and lots that can be found downtown.

The new parking ordinance is designed to improve traffic flow on Phillips Avenue in downtown.

Motorists now have the ability to text to pay at their meter.

Matt Nelson with the city of Sioux Falls told Dakota News Now, “Drivers can now text the name of the street they're parking on to 25023. You get a link back. It’s a secure payment site. You can pick your hours, and you’ll pay by your license plate on your vehicle. And make a one-time payment, or if you want to set up an account, we can link your phone number to it.”

Check this out, just before your meter is set to expire, motorists will get a reminder text that their time is about to expire. So if you haven’t maxed out your time, you can extend it.

What's that? Are you not feeling all that techie? Don't worry, you'll still be able to pay old school style by using cards, and by plugging the meters downtown with coins.

Metered parking will now be in effect from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturdays downtown. Parking on Sundays will still be free.

All in all there is roughly a combination of 13,000 private and public parking spots throughout the downtown district of Sioux Falls.

All these new changes are designed to help make the driving experience downtown an easier and more pleasurable one for Sioux Falls motorists.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - The next time you’re parking downtown in Sioux Falls, you’ll find some new features to make it easier to drive down Phillips Avenue and pay for parking anywhere in the city core.

May 1 is the official launch of some parking changes downtown. Matt Nelson with the city explained the new extended-length vehicle ordinance and the freshly painted white lines at the end of parking spots.

“You cannot extend into the drive lane on Phillips Ave. It affects about 140 spots in downtown,” Nelson said.

The traffic flow will improve while still providing lots of downtown parking for longer vehicles.

“You can park it on one of the side streets. Or you can park at one of our ramps and lots that are downtown,” Nelson explained.

Another improvement is the ability to text to pay at your meter.

“Text the word for your zone, and right now we’re on Phillips and you text that to 25023. You get a link back. It’s a secure payment site. You can pick your hours and you’ll pay by your license plate on your vehicle. And make a one time payment or if you want to set up an account we can link your phone number to it,” Nelson explained.

Just before your meter expires.

“[You] actually get a reminder text that your time is about to expire. So if you haven’t maxed out your time, you can extend it,” Nelson said.

The improvements are good news for customers.

“I watch people come out here and struggle with them, and sometimes I come out of the store and help them. I’ve seen our great ambassadors come by, and they help them with it. So any method that they can use that going to make it easier for them; doing a touch or doing a text, that’s going to be a great way. Plus, they can still still use cards, and they can still use coins. I mean, what a brilliant way to make it easy for people to actually do their parking,” said ... Thomas James.

Another change takes place on Saturdays, as metered parking fees will be in effect from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sundays will still be free.

“We can track that differently and integrates with all of our software that we use now. So it’s much easier for us to track and find payments and make sure you don’t get tickets,” Nelson said.

There are 13,000 private and public parking spaces downtown. Money collected from the meters goes back to improvements in the center of the city.
