Remember Savannah's former Rogers Laundry? Owners of Laundry Diner want to hear your stories

Do you remember dropping off your “dry clean only” clothes at Rogers Laundry on the corner of Paulsen and Anderson streets? Did you find Rogers’ receipts or coat hangers covered with Rogers Laundry paper when you were cleaning out your parents’ or grandparents’ homes?

If you have photographs, matchbooks, stories about or anything related to Rogers Laundry, Liz Massey would love to hear from you. Massey and her team have been working hard for two years to revamp the old Rogers Laundry building at the corner of Paulsen and Anderson streets and transform it into The Laundry Diner. The establishment will serve breakfast all day, lunch, dinner and late-night eats and a few grocery items , in addition to Two Tides Brewing Co. beer.

In the process of working on the project, Massey has made many friends in the midtown neighborhood, many of whom have shared memories of Rogers and the people who worked at the longtime dry cleaning plant. Curious passersby often stop to chat about the building or the nearby Dooner Mattress Co.

Massey welcomes the conversations and has made friends with many neighbors.

“We’ve heard some good stories and collected great information,” said Massey, who also owns Two Tides Brewing Co., Float Coffee and Smol Bar with her husband, James.

On Instagram and Facebook Massey has posted photos of a vintage Rogers matchbook, that lists 12 branches and washaterias and a cardboard-like square designed to fit in a man’s coat pocket. In between dealing with the city of Savannah on acquiring permits and addressing the business’ parking needs, while overseeing work on the building, Massey ventured over to the Georgia Historical Society to search files for photos of the building and its workers.

She hasn’t found any photos but certainly wants to and is asking longtime Savannahians who may have had relatives who worked at Rogers to share pictures of their grandmothers, etc.

Kudos to Massey for her dedication to this particular midtown neighborhood. In the 2½ years since work started on The Laundry Diner, she has overcome numerous challenges―a fire, flood and red tape―that might have discouraged a lesser dedicated individual. But, even after a handful of setbacks, Massey is finally seeing the end of the tunnel and may open in late April or early May.

To say she is anxious to open the doors of the diner is an understatement. Recently, she posted this comment on The Laundry Diner Facebook page: “We are SO ready to be a part of the neighborhood and your lives.”

Many memories of Rogers have arrived via word-of-mouth and he said/she said, Massey pointed out. She has discovered that in the four decades that Rogers was operating on Paulsen and Anderson that it “was a kind of a hub for people who lived in this neighborhood and walked to work and passed by every day.”

Back in the day, residents often lived, worked and shopped in the same area, she said. It was also like that decades ago in the Starland District, now home to Two Tides.

“People walked or biked to businesses in their neighborhood,” she said.

If you have any photos, merchandise or marketing items from Rogers, drop by 1401 Paulsen St., email Massey at hello@the laundrydiner.com or call her at (512) 940-6001.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Savannah will be hosting a series of evening community engagement meetings in late April to gather input from residents and share information about a proposed Stormwater Utility.

The meetings will provide an opportunity for the public to learn about the proposed utility, ask questions, and provide feedback. The individual meetings are being held in each Aldermanic District, April 21 – April 30 at 6 p.m.

The City says Savannah faces numerous challenges related to stormwater drainage including aging and expanding infrastructure, flood mitigation, and a changing climate that has produced more intense storms.

In the past, the City has used a combination of funding sources including federal grants, Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds, and general fund appropriations to address drainage issues in the past. Now, City staff are exploring the creation of a dedicated funding mechanism through a new utility to help alleviate the long-term financial burden of future stormwater management.

They say the proposed Stormwater Utility would fund all services within the Stormwater Management Program with a focus on drainage system maintenance, reduction in flooding, water quality management, and regulatory compliance. The new utility would reduce reliance on General Fund appropriations, according to the City.

They say like other City utilities, the Stormwater Utility will be funded through a user fee—assigning costs more equitably based on the impact of each property and the service delivery demand that the property imposes on the City’s Stormwater Department.

The City says a property with more pervious areas, like a lawn or garden, would pay lower fees in stormwater utility costs due to their ability to absorb stormwater runoff. Properties with more impervious surfaces, such as parking lots and rooftops, generate greater stormwater runoff and require more service, resulting in higher stormwater utility fees.

In May 2024, the City issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a study to examine the level, cost, and extent of services currently being provided and how they would change under a new Stormwater Utility. In August 2024, City Council approved a $300,000 contract with Stantec Consulting Services to conduct the new study.

For more information about the proposed Stormwater Utility and the upcoming meetings, visit savannahga.gov/stormwater.

Savannah Dining Updates: Just for one day, dine al fresco with David Bowie

This time of the year in Savannah is when you think, "This is why I live here!"

The azaleas show off in all their vivid splendor. A light jacket gets you through the morning but you can shed the layers by mid-day. The sun brightens the bluest skies without making you feel like you've been baked from the inside-out like a microwave oven. Were it not for the sand gnats―

Still, spring in Savannah makes us want to eat outside at a sidewalk bistro or in the park or under oaks backlit by a full moon. Good thing, then, that this week's dining updates gives us options.

Put on your red shoes

The bold visionaries behind some of our favorite neighborhood eateries and watering holes are collaborating for a truly inventive dinner inspired by their favorite David Bowie albums. At 6 p.m., April 1, Cotton & Rye, Sixby, Lone Wolf Lounge and Dee Herb at Winebow Fine Wine and Spirits are cooking up Six Sides of David Bowie, a six-course al fresco dining experience to Bowie's music.

Seating is limited. Tickets are $150 per person and available at https://tinyurl.com/mry2x65c.

Raise a glass

Also from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, Savoy Society, 102 E. Liberty St. (first floor of Drayton Towers) is throwing a welcome-to-town soiree for the folks behind the Municipal Grand Hotel, 132 Broughton St., slated to open this spring.

Located at Abercorn and Broughton streets, the midcentury building was constructed in 1959 as an office building for the First Federal Savings and Loan Association. In more recent years, the 6-story building housed various city departments where residents could pay their utility bills., until it was sold in 2019. The Municipal Grand Hotel was born from a partnership, Midnight Auteur, between the owners of The Ramble Hotel in Denver and the cocktail institution known as Death & Co.

Guests will get to taste the cocktails that will soon be shaken and stirred at Savannah's latest boutique hotel.

Wonder what the general would think?

An homage to Georgia's First City's founder, the apartment-style hotel The Ann Savannah has openedLittle James, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant by day and artisanal cocktail bar by night.

The menu, with flashes of Spain, France and Italy, offers light fare―nibbles in the way of marinated olives, fresh-from-the-garden salads, savory salads and flatbreads. It is ideal for a zesty business lunch just off the beaten path, behind The Grey.

Little James, 110 Ann St., Savannah, littlejamessavannah.com

Starland for lunch, you ask?

Your midday weekend dining options just got bigger. Ukiyo Izakaya and Ramen Bar, 2224 Bull St., in the Starland area is now serving lunch on Saturdays and Sundays, beginning at noon both days.
