The Brief

Mercedes-Benz will expand its footprint in Georgia by establishing its North American headquarters in metro Atlanta, Gov. Brian Kemp announced Tuesday. The move will bring up to 500 jobs to the existing "1MB" campus in Sandy Springs and includes a multi-million dollar investment in a new state-of-the-art research and development (R&D) facility nearby.

What we know:

The consolidation will unite several key corporate functions currently spread across the U.S., positioning Atlanta as the central hub for the automaker’s operations in North America. Mercedes-Benz aims to complete the transition by August 2026.

"Georgia continues to lead the way in the future of mobility and technical innovation, attracting world-class companies like Mercedes-Benz," Kemp said in a statement. "This expansion reinforces why our state remains the best for business and opportunity."

Mercedes-Benz currently employs around 800 people at its Sandy Springs facility, which opened in 2018. The expanded site will house sales, financial services, and corporate functions.

Jason Hoff, CEO of Mercedes-Benz North America, said the decision to centralize in Atlanta will improve collaboration and responsiveness.

Local officials and economic development leaders praised the announcement, citing the economic impact and continued vote of confidence in the region.

Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul called Mercedes-Benz "outstanding corporate partners" and said the expansion represents a "wonderful opportunity" and "significant milestone."

Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts called the move a testament to the county’s business-friendly climate and infrastructure.

Metro Atlanta Chamber President & CEO Katie Kirkpatrick said the expansion further solidifies the region’s role as a hub for innovation and talent.

Broader Economic Development Effort

The project is the result of collaboration between the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the City of Sandy Springs, Select Fulton, Georgia Power, and the Metro Atlanta Chamber. The state’s economic development leaders credited long-standing partnerships and recent infrastructure investments for attracting the continued Mercedes-Benz commitment.

GEORGIA — A new ranking released Tuesday by U.S. News and World Report says Georgia is the 21st best overall in meeting the diverse needs of its residents.

The rankings, which U.S. News first launched in 2017, assess the states across eight categories and 71 metrics. Here’s where Georgia ranked in each of them:

A recent study showed Sandy Springs is Georgia’s most diverse town. Nationwide, the metro Atlanta city was 43rd on WalletHub’s ranking.

Roswell (49th), Atlanta (74th) and Columbus (104th) were also named among the most diverse cities.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, of the state’s more than 11 million people, Georgia is largely comprised of non-Hispanic Caucasian and African-American residents.

Emory University is Georgia’s most diverse post-secondary institution, according to a Niche ranking. Life University and Georgia State University followed suit.

Meanwhile, the Peach State serves customers with diverse tastes in food, offering restaurants that dishes out meals from octopus lemongrass salad to house burgers to caviar and cheese.

Utah topped the U.S. News and World Report list for the third consecutive year. The state has never slipped below the top five in the economy category in the history of the Best States rankings, U.S. News said. Here’s the top 10:

U.S. News said many of the top-ranked states put a big priority on education — the highest-weighted category of the 2025 rankings based on new survey results showing what areas Americans believe their states should prioritize, and which issues present the most pressing concerns.

Five of the top 10 states overall also placed among the top 10 in education, while just one — Massachusetts — did the same in the category carrying the second-highest weight, health care.

Even high-performing states do not excel in every rankings category, U.S. News said.

Utah, for example, ranks near the bottom for environment (No. 48), burdened by poor scores for industrial toxins and pollution health risk. Florida — among the nation’s worst performers for housing affordability and income equality — ranks 47th for opportunity, and South Dakota ranks 46th for health care, weighed down in part by a U.S. News assessment of hospital quality in the state.

There was little movement among low performers in the rankings, which U.S. News said were concentrated primarily in the South but also included states in the West, Midwest and Northeast, as well as Alaska.

The lowest-ranked state is Louisiana. Other states in the bottom 10 are Alaska, Mississippi, New Mexico, West Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.

THE WIZARD OF OZ

SEEKING:

Dorothy: The pretty young heroine, she is transported to Oz from her home in Kansas. Initially dreams of leaving her dull Kansas life but discovers that home is where her heart is.

Scarecrow: A corn field fixture who joins Dorothy to get a brain from the Wizard. Kind and clumsy, he realizes that a new hat is all he needs to unlock the potential of his brain.

Tin Man: A very mechanical man who believes he doesn't have a heart. Joins Dorothy on her quest. Wide-eyed and gentle but moves like a robot.

Cowardly Lion: A beast of the forest, venturing to Oz to get courage from the Wizard. He is frightened of everything, and his terror and subsequent sadness is extremely over-the-top. By the end, he is able to find his confidence.

Wicked Witch Of The West: The villain of the story, she is bent on grabbing Dorothy after she accidentally kills her sister and takes her shoes. A comedic villainess who is also crafty and menacing.

Glinda The Good/ Aunt Em: The Good Witch of the North. Beautiful and graceful. Both ethereal and somewhat whimsical, she helps guide Dorothy once she lands in Oz. Dorothy's aunt and Henry's wife. A typical midwestern farm worker, her main concern is the upkeep of her farm.

Uncle Henry: A Kansas farmer and Dorothy's uncle.

Max Bialystock: The consummate con man. Naturally animated and bombastic, he is never at a loss for charm and manners. Typically conspires with Leo.

Leo Bloom: An accountant. Boring and mousy, he is a hesitant optimist who longs for something more. Dragged into a scheme by Max.

Franz Liebkind: German loyalist playwright. From his lederhosen to his pigeon, Adolph, his love for the motherland is unmistakable. He is imposing yet tender.

Rogers Debris: New York's most famous and flamboyant stage director. Surrounds himself with deliciously beautiful clothing, people, and possessions. In a crowd, it would be impossible to miss him.

Carmen Ghia: Roger Debris' faithful assistant. Carmen is severe in looks and passion for Roger. He may appear younger than he actually is thanks to skilled surgeons.

Ulla Inga Hansen Benson Yonsen Tallen-hallen Svaden-svanson: A young and hopeful actress. Though her beauty might eclipse her talent, Ulla is passionate about life and art. Quite a clueless seductress in some ways.
