Health officials in the Bay Area advised residents on Friday to be aware of three places that were potentially exposed to a case of measles that was detected in a Santa Clara County resident.
The Santa Clara County Public Health Department and Alameda County Public Health Department held a press conference in San Jose to give guidance to anyone who was at the public locations, urging them to monitor for symptoms for up to three weeks, check their vaccination status, and contact their doctor if they fall into certain high-risk categories.
The locations potentially exposed were the H-Mart at 1710 Oakland Road in San Jose on May 21 between 7:15 p.m. and 9 p.m., a Newark Starbucks at 35040 Newark Blvd. on May 23 between 11:45 a.m. and 2 p.m., and Trader Joe's in Milpitas at 1306 Grand Mall Parkway on May 25 from 4:45 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Anyone at those locations during those times should check their vaccination status with their health care provider or at myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov.
The public health directors for both Santa Clara and Alameda counties urged anyone who was at the businesses during those times to monitor for symptoms, which could appear anytime between one and three weeks after exposure.
Symptoms include a fever, rash, cough, conjunctivitis causing red eyes, and a runny nose, according to Alameda County director of clinical guidance and communicable disease controller Dr. Kavita Trivedi.
Santa Clara County acting public health director Dr. Sarah Rudman said that anyone who has a weakened immune system, is pregnant, has an unvaccinated toddler, or is unvaccinated themselves, should contact their doctor if they were at one of the identified businesses during a time of potential exposure.
"Measles is a disease that is one of the most contagious diseases that we know about," Rudman said, adding that the MMR vaccine is the best way to prevent the spread of the disease.
The person who tested positive is an adult Santa Clara County resident who recently returned from international travel. They did not require hospitalization and were recovering at home as of Friday.
Health officials said they did not believe there to be any lingering threat of exposure at any of the businesses beyond the initial times identified.
It is the first case of measles in Santa Clara County since 2019. There was an Alameda County resident who had the disease in 2024, prompting a similar warning at the time in that county.

San Jose, CA (June 7, 2025) – An injury collision was reported Saturday morning on Interstate 280 Northbound, just north of S 11th St in San Jose. The crash occurred at approximately 9:26 a.m., affecting the right shoulder and causing traffic delays in the area.
According to the California Highway Patrol, at least one vehicle was involved in the crash, which led to injuries. First responders, including paramedics, assessed and treated individuals hurt in the crash. The number of people injured has not been officially confirmed, but medical assistance was provided on-site and additional care may have been required at local facilities.
The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation. Authorities are examining whether driver distraction, speed, or merging maneuvers contributed to the crash. Traffic was slowed in the northbound lanes as crews worked to clear the scene and assist the injured.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this incident.
Injury Crashes on San Jose’s Freeways
I-280 is a critical artery in the Bay Area, connecting multiple urban centers and serving thousands of commuters daily. The segment near S 11th St sees high traffic volume and frequent lane transitions, making it especially prone to collisions during morning rush hours.
According to data from the California Office of Traffic Safety, San Jose consistently ranks high in the number of freeway injury crashes in Santa Clara County. Factors such as heavy traffic density, sudden lane changes, and distracted driving contribute to many of these incidents.
To reduce accident risks on freeways like I-280, drivers are encouraged to maintain safe following distances, stay alert to traffic patterns, and avoid unnecessary distractions. Emergency pullouts and shoulders should be used only when necessary, as activity near these zones can elevate danger for all road users.
If you or someone you know has been injured in a crash, reach out to Local Accident Reports for assistance.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy today declared the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s high speed rail project in default of the terms of its federal grant awards, threatening $4 billion in federal aid.
The detailed Federal Railroad Administration Compliance Review Report report, which is over 300 pages, provided details of missed deadlines, budget shortfalls and “overrepresentation of projected ridership.”
Duffy gave the authority 37 days to respond, after which the grants could be terminated.
In a June 4 letter to Rail Authority CEO Ian Choudri, Drew Feeley, the acting administrator of the railroad administration, noted its report identified a trail of project delays, mismanagement, waste and skyrocketing costs.
The project has received approximately $6.9 billion in federal dollars in roughly 15 years “but has not laid a single high-speed track,” Feeley said in the letter. “Even with continued federal support, the project is far short of the funding needed to finish just a fraction of the track.”
“I promised the American people we would be good stewards of their hard-earned tax dollars,” said Duffy in a statement. “This report exposes a cold, hard truth: [California High Speed Rail Authority] has no viable path to complete this project on time or on budget.”
Duffy warned, “If they can’t deliver on their end of the deal, it could soon be time for these funds to flow to other projects that can achieve President Trump’s vision of building great, big, beautiful things again.”
“Our country deserves high-speed rail that makes us proud – not boondoogle trains to nowhere,” he said.
Duffy in February requested a review of the high-speed rail project.
At that time, the high-speed rail authority responded by saying it welcomed the review. The authority said at the time that 171 miles have been built and 14,600 jobs have been created by the project. The authority said it could account for all expenditures, and claimed the project is supported by a majority of California voters.

Technical Note
Locality compensation costs are part of the national Employment Cost Index (ECI), which measures quarterly changes in compensation costs (wages and salaries and employer costs for employee benefits) free from the influence of employment shifts among occupations and industries. For information on survey concepts, coverage, methods, nonresponse adjustment, and imputation see the National Compensation Measures Handbook of Methods.
In addition to the data presented here, ECI national data by industry, occupational group, and union status, as well as data for civilian, private, and state and local government employees, are available on the Employment Cost Index website. The national Employment Cost Index Summary is also available online. Additional information for regions, states, and local areas may be accessed via our Western Information Office regional homepage.
