SAN FRANCISCO, CA– The U.S. Green Building Council California (USGBC-CA) has announced that its 24th annual California Green Building Conference will take place in San Francisco for the first time, bringing the state’s largest and longest-running green building event to the Bay Area’s iconic Fort Mason Center on Thursday, May 22, 2025.

Highlighting the importance of sustainability, innovation, and community resilience, the event will feature more than 70 exhibitors and partners, 20 sessions, live case studies, Table Talks, and a host of special programming. A major addition to this year’s conference is the integration of the widely respected Water Conservation Showcase as a full session track and the centerpiece Water Innovation Pavilion.

“The President’s proposal is not a serious one,” Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi said Sunday in a social media post, in which she noted that it was now a “very popular national park and major tourist attraction.”

John Martini, an expert on Alcatraz history who served as a park ranger on the island in the 1970s, shortly after it opened to tourism, told the Chronicle that it would be impossible to reopen the cellblock because the building is “totally inoperable,” with no water or sewage, and electricity only in certain parts.

“It was falling apart and needed huge amounts of reconstruction, and that would have only brought it up to 1963 code,” Martini said. “It was always an extremely expensive place to run.”

According to the federal Bureau of Prisons, Alcatraz was nearly three times as expensive as other U.S. prisons to run, due largely to the fact that food, water and fuel had to arrive by boat.

“If the discussion is to rebuild the prison building to hold people, I don’t think that would be feasible,” Martin said. “It would have to be torn down and rebuilt.”

State Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, described the prospect of reopening Alcatraz as “absurd on its face” in a statement Sunday.

“But apart from Trump’s continuing unhinged behavior, this action is part of Trump’s ongoing crusade to sabotage the rule of law,” Wiener continued. “He specifically points to judges who won’t let him deport whomever he wants without due process as justification for this stunt. If Trump is serious about doing this, it’s just one more step in his dismantling of democracy — a domestic gulag right in the middle of San Francisco Bay.”

Rob Tompkins of Cambridge, England, when informed of the plan after arriving on the 6:15 p.m. inbound Hornblower ferry at Alcatraz Landing on the Embarcadero, said of Trump: “I think he needs to go. It’s one of his more farfetched ideas. It can’t hold prisoners. It’s very antiquated. Maybe they could turn it into a hotel complex. That’s about it. Proper prisons are for prisoners. Not this.”

Also arriving from an Alcatraz visit, Tramir Dunn, 24, who is in U.S. Navy in Monterey, said: “What would be the point? Who would pay for that? Don’t we have enough super max prisons already?

“I think it is impractical. If he’s going to reopen it, he’s going to have to redo the entire thing. He’s going too have to redo the gates. All those mechanisms are from the 30s. We got it for a dollar but it’s not a dollar any more.”

Alcatraz visitor Nick La Mott of Santa Rosa said he thinks it’s a bad idea because the prison is too old and deteriorating.

“It is not humane for people to live there,” he said. “Now if they were to tear it down and rebuild it again, which would actually destroy history, that would be the only way to do it. But to open it up as it is now, no.”

The White House has not issued an executive order on Alcatraz.
