PepsiCo is shuttering its Frito-Lay manufacturing facility in Rancho Cucamonga, California, the latest facility to close by the food giant amid a pullback in spending by consumers.
The beverage and snacking giant did not respond to questions regarding when the plant will close, why it’s closing, how many workers will be impacted, and what products the location currently produces. The 50-year-old plant reportedly employs about 480 people, according to Potatopro.com.
“We are committed to supporting those impacted through this transition and we are offering pay and benefits to impacted employees,” PepsiCo Foods U.S. said in a statement. The company added that its warehouse, distribution, fleet and transportation teams will continue to operate at its Rancho Cucamonga location.
Frito-Lay currently operates more than 30 manufacturing plants across the U.S., the brand said on its website.
As inflation and economic uncertainty prompt consumers to curtail their spending, several companies have announced plans in 2025 to close facilities to bring production in line with demand. Post Holdings, Conagra Brands, Del Monte Foods and J.M. Smucker are just a few of the recent companies to announce closures.
The plant closure in California is the latest to be announced by the PepsiCo subsidiary. In February, it announced it was shuttering a New York plant making PopCorners that employed 287 people.
PepsiCo’s snacking business, which includes everything from Fritos and Doritos to Sun Chips and Funyuns, has been hit especially hard by the recent downturn. During its most recent earnings call, PepsiCo said revenue and product volumes fell 1% at its North American foods unit.
Jamie Caulfield, PepsiCo’s CFO, acknowledged Frito-Lay's “subdued performance” during a call with analysts in April. “We've got clear plans to continue to turn the business around, but that'll take a little while,” he said.
Resilience 5 Years Post-Covid: Spotlight on Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Some moments in our lives remain ingrained in our heads. One such time period was March of 2020, when it felt like the world suddenly stood still as malls, street retail, and dining establishments closed, everyone masked up, and only essential retail and health services continued. After a while, limitations relaxed, but not without a subconscious preference for open-air shopping centers that appears to linger to this day. Granted, many open-air shopping centers are also newer or redeveloped, thus likely contributing to their popularity. However, there’s no doubt that they’ve rebounded at a higher rate compared to their indoor mall and even outlet mall counterparts.
We analyzed traffic data for one of the most-visited open-air shopping centers in the nation, Victoria Gardens, to see what sets it apart and what continues to draw consumers to open-air centers.
This open-air shopping center is over 1.1 million square feet and hosts over 160 retailers within its borders. In addition to marquee brands such as Apple, lululemon, AMC Theatres, and Cheesecake Factory, it also has regional favorites such as Seven Grams dumpling house and cult-favorite Duck Donuts. Boasting a 160 acre main street community, its walkable layout beckons while classics play in the background. Quite a few of the concepts at Victoria Gardens are on trend. For instance, the Food Hall features local eatery Elephant Thai, which is perfectly in keeping with the popularity of all things Thai these days with Season 3 of White Lotus being set in Koh Samui.
Another genre that one doesn’t often see in more urban mall locations are two retailers devoted to Western wear – Buckle and Tecovas.
Tecovas has a fascinating backstory with its founder, Paul Hedrick, partnering initially with bootmakers from Leon, Mexico, the “boot-making capital of the Americas” and selling his first pairs from the backseat of his SUV. With an average dwell time of 40 minutes between April 2024 and February 2025 and holiday spikes for Thanksgiving and Christmas, it’s clear that for many shoppers, a pair of Tecova boots are on their wishlist.
One of the more unique aspects of this mall is its Cultural Center on premise. With a performing arts theater, library, and interactive children’s museum right next to retail, dining, and a movie theater, it’s truly a one-stop shop for its community.
As shopping centers continue to evolve, with many adopting a Town Square approach, the appeal of open-air shopping centers – full of public spaces, greenery, walkable paths, and fresh air – will only continue to grow.

The Sanctity Hotel and Durango Cocina & Rooftop Bar has opened in Rancho Cucamonga, California, as part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection.
The 68-room hotel has retreat style accommodations and premium amenities, including a gym, sauna and Thriv Studio—offering advanced wellness therapies—as well as rooftop dining, according to Globiwest Hospitality, which will operate the hotel.
“Bringing Sanctity Hotel and Durango Cocina to life has been a dream come true. Every detail tells a story, inviting guests to experience something truly unique to the area,” said Sachin Bhakta, vp of development at Globiwest Hospitality, in a statement. “Rancho Cucamonga is an incredible community, and we wanted to create a space that feels like a true retreat—where guests can unwind, experience exceptional hospitality, and enjoy amazing food and drink at Durango Cocina.”
Sanctity Hotel’s design is a modern interpretation of the five fundamental elements—earth, water, fire, air, and space—woven into every detail of the property. Inspired by the palaces of India and brought to life with natural materials, the interiors are grounded in earth through the use of hand-carved Parota wood sourced from Mexico.
For guests seeking wellness treatments, Thriv Studio offers an advanced, holistic approach to relaxation and rejuvenation with innovative services like Lymphatic Drainage Therapy, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Infrared Ozone Therapy, and BrainTap Therapy—each designed to enhance mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
Meanwhile, led by chef Alex Carrasco, a Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient, Durango Cocina’s menu pays tribute to the culinary heritage of Durango, Mexico, while integrating locally sourced ingredients and modern cooking techniques. Brought to life by Boulevard Hospitality Group, the new concept is designed to bring a vibrant culinary destination and the city’s first rooftop dining experience.
Set against expansive mountain views, Rancho Cucamonga’s first rooftop bar has serpentine-style seating and cabana sections surrounding fire pits and offers guests menu options like its Ceviche and an extensive mezcal and tequila selection, handcrafted cocktails, fine wines, and house-made agua frescas.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA — Jacob Peyton belted the eighth-inning home run that lifted the Rancho Cucamonga baseball team to victory Wednesday.
Friday afternoon, Peyton once again was the biggest thorn in the side of Los Osos.
Peyton tossed a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts and hit a three-run homer as the Cougars swept the three-game Baseline League series with a 5-2 victory.
Rancho Cucamonga (16-3 overall, 6-0 in league) retained sole possession of first place in the Baseline League standings, one game ahead of Damien.
“The Peyton kid was unbelievable this week,” Los Osos coach Travis Kelly said. “All three games, he seemed to come up big when his team needed it.”
Los Osos (12-6, 3-3) struck the first blow Friday, as Justin Yeutter plated Roberto Topete with a two-out single against Peyton in the top of the first inning.
Grizzlies starter Gavin Loeb-Keene needed only 17 pitches to retire the first six batters of the game, but he ran into some trouble in the bottom of the third.
Ethan Diaz was plunked by a pitch and Derek Lesiuk reached on a catcher’s inference. Loeb-Keene nearly escaped that jam, but Brock Foulds hustled down the line and avoided being doubled up. Peyton then stepped in the box, turned on an inside slider and smashed the ball over the fence in left field.
“He threw me two sliders in the first at-bat, so I figured another was coming,” Peyton said about jumping on the first pitch in his second time at the plate.
Peyton had some trouble locating his own slider early on, so he went to the bullpen between the second and third innings to work out a few kinks.
“I realized I was just throwing it a bit too hard,” said Peyton, who improved to 5-0 with Friday’s win. “I slowed things down. It felt pretty good after that.”
Peyton’s performance Friday afternoon was the latest gem from Rancho Cucamonga’s staff. The Cougars have allowed only 33 runs across 19 games.
“The pitching, not only this week but all season, has been fantastic,” Rancho Cucamonga coach Chris Amaya said. “We know coming into the year that Brock Foulds and Jacob Peyton were going to be our big horses. … Mason Sanchez gave us a great game Wednesday, which was key for this series.”
Hunter Meyer led off the fourth inning with a single and later scored on a double to play as Los Osos cut the deficit to 3-2.
Peyton’s teammates gave him some insurance in the bottom of the fifth. Rowan Suchanek was hit by a pitch with one out and Foulds then drew a walk. Loeb-Keene got a strikeout for the second out of the inning, but Grant Thomas lined a single back up the middle to bring home Suchanek and Foulds.
Rancho Cucamonga managed only three hits against Loeb-Keene during Friday’s game, but two of them brought home all five of the Cougars’ runs.
“We took advantage of some free bases that were given to us, and you have to do things like that to beat a team as good as Los Osos,” Amaya said.
Peyton walked the leadoff hitter in the seventh inning but finished his complete game with a pair of strikeouts and a fly ball to center that ended the game.
Amaya said he is pleased with opening league play with two sweeps but knows a long road remains.
“We have nine more games, and that’s an eternity,” Amaya said. “We’re playing great baseball, but we come back next week with another rival Etiwanda.”
Los Osos will look to bounce back next week in its three-game series with Upland.
“Rancho was the better team this week, and we have to come back next week and do what needs to be done,” Kelly said. “We’ll see where everyone stands after these next nine games are played. I still believe we have one of the best teams in the state.”
