A First Alert had been issued for the afternoon and evening of Thursday, June 19, 2025, as a cold front brought widespread storms with strong wind gusts, heavy rain, hail, and a possible isolated tornado.
Tornado Warnings were issued for Chester and Delaware counties in Pennsylvania as well as New Castle County in Delaware late Thursday afternoon as severe storms moved towards the region. They were later cancelled shortly before 5:30 p.m.
Powerful winds from the storms brought down trees and caused widespread damage and power outages throughout the Philadelphia area and surrounding suburbs.
Thousands of people are still without power as of 10 a.m. Friday morning. Most outages are in Montgomery County, where more than 46,000 customers don't have electricity. In Delaware County, about 40,000 customers still need their power to be restored. In Bucks County, about 37,700 customers were impacted. In Chester County, over 18,000 and in Philadelphia, approximately 6,400 customers are without power.
In Atlantic City, over 300 customers are without power, in the Delaware area, about 2,000, and in South Jersey, nearly 200.
SEPTA officials reported that service continues to be impacted by damage from the severe storms on Thursday.
As crews continue to clear trees and address damage, officials shared the following statement:
"On Regional Rail, service is suspended on the Warminster Line. In addition, the Manayunk/Norristown Line is operating with a single track, and all customers must board on the outbound side. On the Media/Wawa Line, service is operating between Center City and Media only. Delays on all Regional Rail lines are expected through the morning.
On Metro Rail, the suburban D1 Trolley is operating with shuttle buses from Scenic Road to Orange Street. All other rail services are operating on normal schedules."

After announcing last year that Pennsylvania would be getting new license plate designs for the first time since 1999, Pa. Governor Josh Shapiro celebrated the state getting new designs with the help of some of the Commonwealth's most beloved mascots.
Earlier this week, Shapiro shared a video on social media that showed Philadelphia sports mascots: the Phillie Phanatic, Gritty, Swoop, Phang and Franklin -- along with Pittsburgh's Pirate Parrot and Steely McBeam -- unboxing the new design.
And, not to be outdone, Shapiro unveiled one of his own, as well.
The new plates are cream colored and feature an image of the Liberty Bell along with the slogan "Let Freedom Ring."
Shapiro has said that the new design that is intended to celebrate America's 250th anniversary.
An online history of the state's license plates notes that Pa. hasn't seen a new design since 1999 and, if you remember license plates that said "You've got a friend in Pennsylvania," you have a good memory.
Those haven't been made since 1987, according to the online history.
This new design is now available for Pa. drivers to order ahead of the county's 250th birthday, which will be celebrated in 2026.
The state has set up a site to help drivers who want to be some of the first to obtain the new license plates.

"Immediately, the first thing me, my brother and cousin did was run over there with no questions asked. We went over there and tried to lift the tree. It was very heavy," recalled Lakye Powell, of East Oak Lane.
Strong winds also caused a small, unoccupied plane to overturn at the Northeast Philadelphia Airport.
Outside of the city, drivers had to find another route in Westtown Township, Chester County, after a large tree fell onto Concord Road near Oaklea Lane.
A woman had to be rescued from a home in Upper Darby. Officials say she was pinned by a massive tree that fell on the back of her home on Bond Avenue.
"She was fortunately conscious and alert when we removed her, so that's a good sign," said Dep. Chief Dennis Gallagher, with the Upper Darby Fire Department.
Before crews arrived, neighbors say they jumped into action following the woman's screams for help.

And over in Bala Cynwyd, the storm damaged the roof at One Bala Plaza, home to rock station 93.3 WMMR. The view from Chopper 6 showed debris in the parking lot and at least one car damaged.
The storms caused several delays on Septa's Regional Rail.
An Action News viewer sent us this video of a fire near the Ardsley Station off Jenkintown Road in Glenside.
It appears a tree fell on the overhead wire, sparking a fire.
There has been no word on the damage.
A large tree also fell across Route 29 in Trenton, blocking all of the southbound lanes near the Calhoun Street exit.
Tree branches also came down in front of the State Museum on State Street.
After the storm came the rainbow.
A colorful arc formed over Middletown, Bucks County, and many other communities, as you see from Chopper 6.
People went looking for the bright colors after the nasty weather.
Nearly 300,000 PECO customers were without power during the height of the storm. PECO says it may take several days to get back to normal.
"Really extensive damage, and that's why we've suspended the estimated restoration times," explained PECO spokesperson Greg Smore.
Residents are reminded never to approach a downed power line and to call PECO at 1-800-841-4141. To report an outage, click here
