In recent years, Louisville has gone from having the reputation as a “hidden gem” on the dining and entertainment scene to being duly recognized as one of the best cities in the U.S. for unique restaurants and bars. And of course, the spotlight shines brightest on Kentucky’s biggest city during Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve week.
The food and drink scene in Louisville, like everywhere else on planet Earth, took a staggering hit during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s recovered quite nicely and activity has been at a full-tilt level since 2022. The Louisville area and truthfully the entire state of Kentucky has taken a hit this spring due to extreme weather and flooding, but the Ohio River has subsided, cleanup has accelerated, and tens of thousands of visitors are already making their way to “da Ville” for a week of merriment.
Here are some restaurant and bar options to consider during the week leading up to Derby 151, focusing on walk-in places since most, if not all, of the higher-end establishments are already fully booked.
Good reviews keep pouring in for this Cuban restaurant and rum bar located in Louisville’s poppin’ NuLu district. Run by the Olé Restaurant Group known for Taco Luchador (touted in a past blog), nearby Guacamole, and other spots, it sports a varied menu (try the Cubano) plus expertly crafted Mojitos. And there are many other cool restaurants, bars, and hotel rooftop scenes just a few steps away.
This popular Asian fusion joint is on Bardstown Road, Louisville’s local-restaurant main drag (there’s another location across the river in New Albany, Ind.). Choose from fantastic sushi, shareable plates, bibimbap bowls, and also Asian-infused tacos and quesadillas. And what’s more, sushi and other treats from here are available at the Kaiju Bar on East Oak Street in the hip Germantown neighborhood.
Gralehaus is a café and bed/breakfast that’s been featured on the Food Network, while Holy Grale is a craft biergarten and restaurant serving amazing burgers in its upstairs dining hall known as “Heaven.” The two establishments share a backyard and have a devoted following – Gralehaus by day, Holy Grale in the evening.
Louisville is a brewery-crazed city (so is Lexington) and TEN20 is one of the best, receiving the ABR seal of approval from video director Greg Charkoudian. Located in the Butchertown neighborhood east of downtown, TEN20 offers a diverse roster of lagers, pale ales, and more plus ample space to congregate after the races. The Churchill Downs Light will be a popular selection Derby week and all throughout the spring/early summer. (Two more taprooms are in east Louisville’s Anchorage neighborhood and across the Ohio River in Clarksville, In.)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
A proposed $65 million renovation project to build a tennis and pickleball center in Louisville’s Joe Creason Park is drawing mixed reactions from the community.
While some residents are enthusiastic about the development, others, like long-time neighbor Mindy Perry, worry it will disrupt the peaceful greenspace and increase traffic.
"Outdoor pickleball courts that are loud next to a nature preserve that doesn't seem to coexist very well," Perry said.
The project by Kentucky Tennis and Pickleball Center Inc. aims to lease 25 acres for 36 tennis courts, 18 pickleball courts, and a state-of-the-art facility.
Developers, such as Will Davis, highlight efforts to mitigate concerns.
"We have done traffic studies. We're looking to do solar panels on the roof of the whole thing. So we're net zero. We're actually going to increase the tree canopy. So we try to do our homework and we're trying to be a good neighbor of everyone in this community," Davis said.
Despite potential economic benefits, an estimated $17 million in annual revenue. Many residents remain opposed.
A petition opposing the project has garnered over 2,000 signatures, with lawn signs reading “Save Joe Creason,” a sentiment many share to keep the park the way it is.
"It's a real gift. It's very quiet. I just love it," Perry said.
Melissa Paris, another concerned resident, emphasized the importance of keeping the park accessible to all.
"It's kind of a shared use here. We've got access for everybody, whether they play tennis or not. They can use this green space," Paris said.
Community feedback is encouraged at meetings on Tuesday, May 6, at 6 p.m. at the Cyril Allgeier Community Center and on Saturday, May 10, at a time and location that will be announced soon.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Jefferson County Board of Education is moving forward in its search for a new superintendent.
The board, along with the Superintendent Screening Committee, held a special meeting Thursday evening that included an executive session.
In the public meeting, members voted to "move forward with the process" and interview six candidates for the Jefferson County Public Schools superintendent position.
The position will be available this summer following Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio's retirement.
Last September, Pollio announced he would be stepping down July 1 this year after nearly three decades with Kentucky's largest school district.
JCPS formed the Superintendent Search Advisory Committee to guide Hazard Young Attea Associates, a search firm asked to help hire Pollio's replacement.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
After seven years of serving as a haven for cats and cat lovers alike, the Lucky Cat Café and Lounge, Kentucky’s only nonprofit cat café, will be closing its doors this weekend.
Founded in 2018, this beloved Louisville institution has found homes for more than 760 cats, providing a warm, welcoming space for adoptions in partnership with rescue organizations.
Executive director BJ Wysoske expressed the difficulty of the decision, citing staffing issues and rising costs as the reason for the closure.
"To have a good nonprofit, you need people who are passionate and have the time to devote to making the cat café run the way it needs to," Wysoske said.
While the café nearly shut down in 2023, the community rallied to provide the financial support needed to remain open for another year and a half.
“Our entire existence is based on donations,” Wysoske explained. “We’ve had amazing people donate time, money, and supplies, but it’s a different era we’re living in.”
Three cats remain at the café: Clark, dubbed “a certified chonk,” Sassy, and Chelsea. Those three, including kittens the shelter is expecting to get before it closes, will be available for adoption until Sunday.
"766 families have new family members because of us," Wysoske said.
The closing of Lucky Cat Café is a bittersweet moment for the community.
Its unique, homey environment provided a safe place for even the most skittish cats to find forever homes. Wysoske described the setting as a comfortable alternative to crates, fostering bonds that might not have formed otherwise.
"This provided a safe place for cats that may not have warmed up in a cage to, like, find their people," she said. "We gave cats a lot of extra time and love, especially the ones that were skittish."
The café will remain open through Sunday, allowing supporters one last chance to visit, share memories, and celebrate its legacy.
Visitors are encouraged to stop by and leave messages on the café’s memory board—a tribute to the lives touched by the nonprofit.
All remaining cats that do not get adopted will return to their original fosters or rescue programs, all of which are no-kill.
Property tax changes coming for many Louisville homeowners; here's how to appeal

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Property taxes could soon change for tens of thousands of homeowners in Jefferson County, but if you disagree with the reassessment you are encouraged to appeal.
Nearly 90,000 notices with property tax assessments are set to be mailed to homes and businesses that are affected in Prairie Village, Fairdale, Okolona West Buechel and Iroquois Park.
Homeowners in the Iroquois Park neighborhood told WDRB they still believe their home was a good investment, despite the rising taxes.
"It's still the American dream to own a home," said Kevin Triplett. "There's nothing like it to me."
Tripplett's dream became reality when he bought his first home in the Iroquois neighborhood in 1990. He has lived in homes along Southern Parkway ever since.
The Iroquois neighborhood is one of several neighborhoods that Jefferson County is reassessing this year.
"You can see the numbers are still climbing, there are still sales going on despite somewhat higher mortgages, but the median value is what's driving this in terms of people paying more for houses," said PVA administrator Colleen Younger.
And when home value goes up, so does the property tax.
That money goes to fund public schools and public safety, according to PVA officials.
Triplett said tax increases are not unique to Jefferson County.
"The price of housing is going up everywhere, not just in Louisville but everywhere," said Triplett.
Triplett's neighbor told us he is concerned about the higher cost of being a homeowner.
"It's such a different dramatic change as far as the rates and everything," he said.
Triplett acknowledges that the reassessments have many concerned about higher tax bills in November, but pointed out that "the idea that your property is going up in value is a good thing."
Shank offers this advice: "I would suggest have your budget in order."
How to appeal
If you disagree with your property value assessment you can appeal, but be sure you have at least one of the following to support your case:
In 2025, the first step of the appeal process involves an "Online Conference" that most people will complete using the self-service portal tool available on the PVA website. Website users must first create a no-cost user account to access detailed property information. This change was required to support enhanced website security.
PVA staff will be available to help property owners who need assistance with the Online Conference at the following locations:
Southwest and South Central Regional Library Branches
PVA Office - 815 W Market St, Suite 400
Evening Hours
Telephone Conferences are available for those unable to travel for in-person assistance. Appointments for teleconferences can be made by calling the PVA office at 502-574-6224.
