There will be 11 sporting events taking place along Long Beach's waterfront during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

LONG BEACH, CA — Long Beach has been selected to host 11 sporting events for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, city officials said in a statement Tuesday.

During the city of Los Angeles' initial 2017 bid to host the 2024 games, Long Beach was proposed as a site for five beachside sports. The 2024 Olympics, however, were instead hosted in Paris and Los Angeles was picked as the location for the 2028 games.

Now, Long Beach's waterfront will serve as the backdrop for a series of competitions such as beach volleyball, sport climbing, target shooting, handball, marathon swimming, and more, according to city officials.

This decision comes after the International Olympic Committee's Executive Board approved the venue plan for the 2028 Olympics on April 9.

“Long Beach is now confirmed to serve as a premier waterfront venue for the 2028 Games," Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said in a statement Tuesday. "We are proud to share our unique waterfront with athletes and fans from across the globe as we unite to celebrate the power of sport."

Beach volleyball will take place at Alamitos Beach, while other sports, such as water polo and artistic swimming, will be held in a temporary aquatics center at the Convention Center lot, city officials said. Canoe-sprint and rowing competitions will take place at Marine Stadium and sailing in Belmont Shore.

The triathlon competitions that were previously announced for Long Beach, meanwhile, will be relocated to a different city, city officials said.

"The additional events to Long Beach's already established competition zones will not only enhance the overall experience for both athletes and spectators but will also keep additional expenses and impact lower while bringing in more visitors, economic activity, and revenue to Long Beach," city officials said.

The 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles are scheduled to run from July 14 through July 30.

Long Beach is also expected to host competitions for the 2028 Paralympic Games that will take place from Aug. 15 to Aug. 27 in Los Angeles. It's unclear what sports will be held in the city at this time, but city officials said it would be announced in the coming months.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A whale has been found dead days after it wandered into the waters of Long Beach's Rainbow Harbor, officials said Sunday.

"The minke whale that had been circling within Long Beach Harbor for much of the week was unfortunately found dead this morning, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in a statement. "NOAA Fisheries is working with local officials to determine how best to access and examine the carcass to learn what happened to the whale. We will share more information when it becomes available."

On Thursday morning, video from AIR7 showed the whale circling in the harbor and attracting onlookers near the Catalina Express dock.

The footage showed the massive marine mammal loitering around in the area near Golden Shore Drive and Shoreline Village, across from the Queen Mary. Just how long the whale had been in the harbor was unclear.

Chelsea Quezada, a spokesperson for the nearby Aquarium of the Pacific, confirmed it was a minke whale.

There were efforts to remove some booms near the exit to the harbor to give the whale more room to leave, using noise to encourage it to swim toward the exit, an NOAA spokesperson said.

"The whale did actually briefly head out but then reversed back into the harbor and remained there," the agency said Thursday. "For the time being now the team is standing down to see if the whale finds its way out on its own. This does happen with different whale species from time to time in different harbors and bays and usually they find their way out on their own within a few days."

On day two of BeachLife Festival, the South Bay Pacific shoreline again served as both amphitheater and muse, with generations of California sounds rising like ocean spray from the festival stages. The day belonged to local sons Sublime, now fronted by Jakob Nowell—son of the late Bradley Nowell—who delivered a set that felt reverent, rowdy, and raw all at once.

Before Sublime’s spiritual homecoming, the day unfolded like a radio dial stuck between classic alt-rock and island haze. ALO opened with buoyant jams that gave early arrivers a reason to dance barefoot on the grass.

Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath, eternally youthful in mirrored shades and bleached hair, surfed his way through “Fly” and “Every Morning” with tongue-in-cheek charm.

Long Beach Dub Allstars doubled down on the ska-punk roots that paved Sublime’s rise, their reggae-driven grooves inviting the crowd to sway and dance in the sand.

Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles was a stunning outlier in the lineup—her infectious smile, a light in the gray cloudy skies. She shimmered through “Manic Monday” and “Eternal Flame” with disarming intimacy, even under the overcast 4 PM late afternoon skies.

Skip Marley brought needed gravitas and warmth, blending roots reggae with modern beats in a set that honored his lineage while carving his own path.

Cake, ever the arch alt-rock oddballs, delivered sardonic banter and laser-precise renditions of “The Distance” and “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” their deadpan delivery contrasting sharply with the sea of grinning faces.

Then came Pretenders, led by Chrissie Hynde, as fierce and formidable as ever. With a voice that cut through the evening like salt air, she powered through “My City was Gone” and “Back on the Chain Gang” with punk elegance, closing their set with a soaring “Precious.”

As dusk turned to night, the scent of grilled foods of all kinds and skunky weed swirled through Seaside Lagoon, Sublime took the stage to a hero’s welcome. Jakob, shoeless and vivacious, mirrored his father’s kinetic energy, pacing and snarling through “Date Rape,” “Santeria,” and “What I Got” like someone who inherited not just a name, but a purpose. While his vocals leaned cleaner and more contemporary, the soul of the songs remained bruised and sunburned, a sonic postcard from 1996 Long Beach.

Behind him, drummer Bud Gaugh and bassist Eric Wilson locked in like old friends finishing each other’s sentences. The crowd—barefoot, buzzed, and teary-eyed—sang back every lyric, as if trying to raise Bradley’s ghost from the waves just beyond the stage.

As Sublime’s final notes rang out over the Pacific, the crowd exhaled in one sunburned, stoned, and satisfied breath. Day two of BeachLife was not just a lineup—it was a lineage, a living mixtape of California’s musical DNA.
