According to reports from Arkansas Business, an unnamed company is hoping to build a $1 billion, 300,000-SF data center in Little Rock.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — An unnamed Fortune 100 company is hoping to build a $1 billion, 300,000-SF data center in Little Rock, according to a report from Arkansas Business.
"They've got a great reputation, and it will be nice to have them in our community," Bryan Day, Executive Director of the Little Rock Port Authority, said of the unnamed company.
The city's board of directors met Tuesday night and adopted a resolution that Mayor Frank Scott Jr. can enter in a memorandum of understanding with Willowbend Capital LLC, which represents the company behind the Little Rock Port project.
The proposed data center would create about 50 jobs and potential to build additional facilities at the site. While all the details aren't currently available, the development allegedly mirrors a $1 billion data center project underway in Conway.
“There was a lot of work to get us to this point. We can’t say much about it except for it’s a big deal,” Mayor Scott said at the meeting. “It doesn’t happen without a great team of these individuals, including the Little Rock City Board of Directors.”
“In economic development, there's a lot of things we have to kind of keep quiet until the big announcement," Day added. "Eventually, everything will be public.”
It's a project the Little Rock Regional Chamber is also excited about, according to Jack Thomas, who serves as the Vice President for Economic Development.
Thomas added that the data center won't come with any of the negatives sometimes associated with facilities like these.
"This is not Bitcoin," Thomas said. "This is not a cryptocurrency mine. This is a Fortune 100 company with world-leading technology that will come to Little Rock if we can get this deal finalized.”
That's what the next sixty days are for—the company that would operate the data center will inspect the site to make sure it fits their needs.
"In June, they'll close on the property, assuming that everything works out. And it will," Day said. "And at that time, we'll be able to go public and let all of Arkansas know who it is, and all the other ancillary benefits of this."
Under the arrangement with Willowbend Capital, the City of Little Rock would reduce the electric, water and sewer franchise fees for the development and support a property tax abatement of at least 65% for 30 years for the project.
Additionally, Central Arkansas Water and the Little Rock Water Reclamation Authority would help meet infrastructure needs, including designing a water supply extension to the site and a cooling tower system.
An extension of Zeuber Road would also be included in infrastructure improvements—the new facility would be located in the area between Zeuber Road, Sweet Home and College Station, near the location of an Amazon Distribution Center currently under construction.
