KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Five U.S. Postal Service employees have been charged with stealing mail.

The U. S. Attorney's Office - District of Kansas has announced in a news release that the defendants are all charged with one count of conspiracy to steal mail and one count of theft of mail.

The defendants, who were employees at the Robert L. Roberts post office on North 51st Street, are accused of stealing Amazon return packages, mail, and other items for their personal use between early 2023 and mid-October 2023.

The U.S. Attorney's office release says the Roberts branch was a designated location where Amazon packages were sent before their eventual return to an Amazon distribution center.In late 2022, Amazon packages began accumulating at the Roberts location and were placed in large cardboard bins called Gaylords.

Video recordings from early 2023 to mid-October 2023 revealed that more than 25 USPS employees took items from the Gaylords containing the return parcels. The group included letter carriers, supervisors, and managers. Some employees took one or a few items and others took multiple items.

On some occasions, supervisory personnel were present when non-supervisory personnel rifled through and took items from the Gaylords. Supervisors and managers also took items from the Gaylords that were positioned in different areas inside and outside the Roberts branch.

The release states that Multiple employees reported that managers, Luster, Wankum and Hook told employees that the Amazon return packages were "trash," and the "items had to go," and that they were "free to take."

Amazon packages were recovered in the vehicles and homes of multiple postal employees.

The scheme resulted in the theft, rifling, or pilfering of approximately 1,384 known parcels to be returned to Amazon.

Both a conspiracy to steal mail and theft of mail charges carry terms of imprisonment of no more than five years, a term of supervised release of no more than three years, a fine not exceeding $250,000, and a mandatory special assessment of $100.

Former Lee’s Summit North and Mizzou standout Armand Membou was selected with the seventh overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday.

The 6-foot-6, 320-pound offensive tackle, who anchored the right side of Missouri’s offensive line, had been widely projected as a top-10 selection following a standout senior season and strong showing at the NFL Combine.

He will now play for the New York Jets.

Membou ran a 4.91-second 40-yard dash and logged 31 bench press reps, boosting his stock among scouts.

He earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2024 after not allowing a single sack or quarterback hit throughout the season.

In an interview with the team's Website, Membou called it a blessing to be drafted by the team.

"It's just a big relief and definitely a blessing," Membou said. "I guess God told me....plus the Jets have a really young, promising team. I thought that would be a good fit for me, too."

He's the first pick for new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn.

"Athletically, he's off the charts," Glenn said. "He's mean, tough, nasty. He really fits what we're trying to do on offense. It was really a no-brainer. Once he was there for our pick, this was the guy."

Missouri Tigers tackle Armond Membou, who played at Lee’s Summit North High, was selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the New York Jets on Thursday night.

Membou was taken seventh overall, becoming the first Mizzou player taken that early since Aldon Smith, also taken seventh, in 2010.

A right tackle through his three years in Columbia, Membou was named second-team All-SEC this past season. The Tigers finished 10-3, posing double-digit victories in consecutive seasons for the third time in school history.

Membou didn’t give up any sacks or quarterback hits in 411 pass-blocking snaps last season.

His stock really soared after the NFL Scouting Combine in February. He wowed observers in Indianapolis when he was clocked in the 40-yard dash at 4.91 seconds. He also turned in a 9 foot, 7 inch broad jump, tops among all offensive linemen, and 34-inch vertical jump.

That is where the Jets met Membou for the first time.

“We first got a chance to meet him at the combine in a formal interview,” Jets general manager Darren Mougey said. “I always kind of admired the film, the physicality. We had him for a top 30 visit — on his 21st birthday. We had a great visit there.

“He’ll come in and compete to start at right tackle, a very natural fit. He’s played it before.”

Membou didn’t attend the NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In an interview, he said he’s ready to do what’s asked of him by first-year Jets hed coach Aaron Glenn.

“I’m a mauler,” Membou said. “Whatever they need me to do, it doesn’t matter. Just run behind me.”

Membou was the second offensive tackle taken in the draft. With the fourth pick, the New England Patriots selected Will Campbell from LSU.

This marks the second straight year Missouri has had a player selected in the first round. In 2024, defensive end Darius Robinson was taken No. 27 by the Arizona Cardinals.

The Jets, meanwhile, selected a tackle with their first pick for the second straight year. Last year, they took Penn State’s Olu Fashanu at No. 11 overall.
