The Brief

KENT, Wash. - Seventeen immigrants were arrested during an ICE raid in Kent on Tuesday.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a multi-agency investigation was being conducted on Eagle Beverage at the West Valley Business Park in Kent.

The company makes specialty beverage products — beverage mixes, syrups, teas, frappes, cocoa, cider, sweet spices and straws — according to their website.

Federal authorities assert the Eagle Beverage illegally employed immigrants without work authorization.

ICE agents served a search warrant and raided the facility on Monday.

The agency says 17 people had "fraudulently represented their immigration status" and were arrested during the raid.

Only 7% of carpenters are women in Washington, so this union is hoping to recruit more into the industry.

KENT, Wash. —

The Western States Regional Council of Carpenters union (WSRCC) has launched a new program at the Kent training center focused on recruiting more women into the trade.

The Bridging Outstanding Opportunities with Tradeswoman Skills (BOOTS) program originated in Los Angeles then expanded to Portland in 2024. It’s a four-week pre-apprenticeship class exclusively for women that lays the framework for entering the carpentry trade.

Dani Ferris has been a carpenter for ten years and teaches the new all-women class in Kent. She said she’s witnessed firsthand the lack of women and female role models in the trades.

“Now, we’re being able to set these women up so that the future generations, they will be able to come in and they’ll see somebody who looks like them, they’ll see somebody in roles of success and leadership. Then they’ll know hey, I can do this, I got this,” said Ferris.

A WSRCC spokesperson said in the union, women make up 3.23% of the membership. In Washington state, women make up about 7% of the carpentry workforce.

Ferris said it’s a hard but rewarding job. She’s proud to have a hands-on job that has high impact.

“I love being able to wake up every morning, go in, put in an honest days work, see the progress of what I’m doing every day. Then be able to leave and come back and drive down the street, look at all the things I touched, and be like ‘I did that,’” she said.

New apprentices in Washington start at $37 an hour, then increase to $61.54 an hour when they become journeymen.

The first cohort of women in the BOOTS program is started in March, but Ferris said this will be a regular, ongoing program for women moving forward.

Grand Opening on May 23rd

In March, we shared news that Logan Brewing of Burien, Washington, was opening a second location: a brewery and taproom in nearby Kent, Washington. The former home of Airways Brewing, which closed last year, was getting a bit of a makeover while Logan Brewing waited for permits and licensing. Today we happily share news that Logan Brewing will open its new-to-them location in Kent on Friday, May 23rd. Here’s the announcement from social media, as well as our original story

Another local brewery is taking over the former Airways Brewing location in Kent

It’s been a poorly kept secret, but Logan Brewing didn’t want to make any assumptions or official announcements until the paperwork was settled. Today, the Burien-based brewery announced its plans to take over the Airways Brewing taproom and brewery in Kent.

As we reported, Airways Brewing closed the first of its two locations, the Bistro in downtown Kent, in October last year. A month later, it announced it was going out of business entirely and closing the brewery and taproom on 212th Street. It left a hole in the community. Airways Brewing’s owners hoped another brewery would move in and fill the void. That’s what just happened.

Chris Polumbo (above) is one of the owners at Logan Brewing. He says that the paint is drying and they’re waiting on permits, but he hopes to open it to the public in May or June. He is noticeably excited about this development. The brewery has been looking for a way to increase production for some time, a problem that this development solves. Moving forward, Logan Brewing will produce much more beer, using the relatively new, state-of-the-art brewing equipment that Airways left behind.

“Logan Brewing is growing,” Chris said in the announcement. “We will be carrying on the legacy of Airways Brewing by taking over their former production brewery and taproom in Kent… We’re so excited to put down more roots in South King County! Born in Burien, Made in Kent!”

Logan Brewing’s current location, a brewery and taproom in downtown Burien, is just 10 miles away from what will become its second home at 8611 S 212th Street, Kent, WA. Travelers should plan for overnight closures of northbound and southbound SR 167 in Auburn between April 21-22, and in Kent, between April 24-25.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will install sign bridges and toll gantry structures as part of the SR 167 Corridor Improvements Project.
