Tallahassee coffee company returns to Jacksonville, opening in former Mini Bar Donuts spot

...

After a two-year absence, a popular Tallahassee-based specialty coffee company has returned to Jacksonville with a new cafe near St. Johns Town Center.

Lucky Goat Coffee Co. recently opened at 10618 Deerwood Park Blvd., #1, in Gateway Village Town Center.

The new cafe offers signature Lucky Goat café beverages such as hot and cold brew coffee drinks, espresso and teas, as well as freshly baked goods, including muffins, cookies, croissants and more.

The Deerwod Park coffeehouse takes the space formerly used by The Mini Bar Donuts + Coffee, which closed last November after nearly five years. Nearby restaurants include Midtown Table, Sushi Q and Tropical Smoothie Cafe

The Deerwood Park coffeehouse comes after the former Lucky Goat Co. location at 12620 Beach Blvd., Suite 7, closed in April 2023 after two years in business.

Lucky Goat Co. sources "high-quality, ethically farmed beans" and then roasts them to perfection. But at its core, the company's focus goes beyond coffee, according to a news release announcing the Deerwood Park opening.

"… We’re about connections. Our cafés serve as gathering places where guests can enjoy thoughtfully sourced coffee, locally made treats, and an atmosphere that sparks conversation and creativity," Lucky Goat said in the news release. "As we expand throughout Florida, our goal remains the same: to serve great coffee while fostering meaningful connections in every community we join."

Lucky Goat lists eight locations, including Jacksonville, throughout Florida and one in Texas on its website.

Why is it named Lucky Goat?

Founded in 2010 by Ben Pautsch as a wholesale and distribution company, the company says its name is rooted in the legend of a herdsman named Kaldi who noticed his goats "had an extra spring in their step after eating the wild berries that grew near their feeding grounds." Kaldi tried the berries and had the same feeling of euphoria.

"The seeds of those berries are the coffee 'bean' — which is why we can thank those lucky goats for the delicious drink we have today," Lucky Goat said on its website.

The Deerwood Park cafe is open from 6 a.m to 7 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

(This story has been updated to add new information.)

Bracket time is here.

The Florida High School Athletic Association announced the regional playoff brackets for the high school baseball playoffs across Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, the next step on the road to the 2025 FHSAA finals at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers.

The FHSAA playoffs, scheduled in a best-of-3 format in the regional quarterfinal, regional semifinal and regional final rounds for the first time, open April 21. The superior-seeded team would play at home for Games 1 and 2 in the series, while the third game, if necessary, would be at the team with inferior seeding. Exact game-by-game schedules remain to be determined, and could include doubleheaders.

The draw includes a rematch of district finals, with West Nassau and Fernandina Beach squaring off once more. All five teams from the immensely powerful District 3-2A qualified, while Trinity Christian and St. Johns Country Day landed No. 1 overall seeds for their regions.

Enrollment event for conditionally approved Global Entry applicants

JACKSONVILLE, FL — On June 10, 2025, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will host a seven-day Global Entry Enrollment Event in Jacksonville, Florida for applicants conditionally approved for the Trusted Traveler Program.

“Global Entry is one of the most popular Trusted Traveler programs,” said Carlos C. Martel, CBP Miami - Tampa Director of Field Operations. “We have a significant demand for Global Entry interviews and previous successful enrollment events made this a priority for CBP to help Americans enhance their travel experience."

These special events allow CBP to better serve Global Entry applicants throughout north Florida and surrounding states, by providing these applicants with the opportunity to complete their enrollment process locally.

Applicants under the age of 18 will not have to pay the $120 application fee when a parent or legal guardian is already a member of or concurrently applying for Global Entry, a significant change made in 2025.

Conditionally approved Global Entry applicants can schedule an interview appointment for this event from their Trusted Traveler Portal (TTP) account by selecting the location “Jacksonville Mobile Event."

The following are the dates, times, and location of the enrollment event:

June 10-13, 2025, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

June 16-18, 2025, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

JAXPORT Cruise Terminal, 9810 August Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32226

*Conditionally approved applicants without an appointment may be accommodated if space permits.*

Conditionally approved Global Entry applicants who miss this opportunity may still take advantage of CBP’s Enrollment on Arrival interview process. Applicants may complete their required interviews upon their return from a foreign location at participating airports.

Global Entry is one of the Department of Homeland Security’s Trusted Traveler programs that provide modified screening for pre-approved members, improve security by being more efficient during screenings, and facilitate legitimate trade and travel. Global Entry has more than 10 million members, and is utilized at land, air, and seaports of entry into the U.S., and at Preclearance locations around the world.

Successful Global Entry applicants also receive the benefit of the TSA PreCheck® program.

Travelers must be pre-approved for all Trusted Traveler programs, including Global Entry. All applicants undergo rigorous and recurring background checks and complete an in-person interview before enrollment.

CBP's border security mission is led at our nation’s Ports of Entry by CBP officers and agriculture specialists from the Office of Field Operations. CBP screens international travelers and cargo and searches for illicit narcotics, unreported currency, weapons, counterfeit consumer goods, prohibited agriculture, invasive weeds and pests, and other illicit products that could potentially harm the American public, U.S. businesses, and our nation’s safety and economic vitality.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is America's frontline: the nation's largest law enforcement organization and the world's first unified border management agency. The 65,000+ men and women of CBP protect America on the ground, in the air, and on the seas. We facilitate safe, lawful travel and trade and ensure our country's economic prosperity. More cyber, less glassblowing? JU cutting majors, faculty to focus on high-demand fields

Jacksonville University is laying off about 40 faculty members and retiring dozens of tradition-bound majors to focus on newer degrees in high demand, school officials said Tuesday.

The change is meant “to do more of what we do well for our students,” JU President Tim Cost said in a written announcement, describing a transition also intended to help navigate a widely forecast nationwide drop in college admissions.

Students in programs that are ending are being notified in person Tuesday and faculty on Tuesday and Wednesday, Cost said in an interview.

He said only about 100 of the school’s 4,200 students will be “impacted” and that existing students will be able to graduate in their fields. New students won’t be allowed to enroll for those degree programs in the fall.

The 91-year-old Arlington college had boasted more than 100 majors, minors and programs, but JU said that list is being pared back to 37 “in-demand” undergraduate majors and minors and 15 master’s and doctoral degrees.

The offerings will range from nursing and health care science to business administration, psychology, computer science, cybersecurity, marine science, aviation, finance, dance, visual arts and media arts, a JU release said.

The cutbacks won't include JU's College of Law or the university's partnership with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, which is scheduled to open LECOM at JU, the city's first four-year medical school, in fall of 2026.

Cost said the university is focusing on fields that can feed graduates into Northeast Florida’s economy with skills that can land good jobs.

Much of JU’s student body already wants those fields, Cost said, with about 1,000 of the school’s 4,200 students enrolled in nursing or health care programs that have flourished during the past decade.

About another 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in 15 fields of study involving humanities, social sciences, education and math that are not affected by the changes.

But Cost said the school also has “legacy” majors that might only graduate 10 students over four years and are harder to justify financially.

Studies in fields including glassblowing, music composition and world languages reflect courses the university launched a generation or two back.

Cost said the reduced list of majors and departure of some faculty will fit with a JU effort to curb "controllable expenses" by 10% starting this fall.

An "academic financial task force" of deans, administrators and veteran faculty members weighed choices and added input before plans for cutting majors were complete.

“These important academic decisions reflect hundreds of hours of analysis, consideration, debate and discussion among senior University leaders from all departments, including our faculty,” a JU release quoted Provost Sherri Jackson saying of the outcome.
