If you’ve ever needed a ride to a doctor’s appointment, grocery store, work or other destination, there’s a new option in Highlands Ranch that might be just what you’re looking for.
On Tuesday, May 27, the Board of Douglas County Commissioners joined partners from the City of Lone Tree and transportation provider Via to officially launch the Highlands Ranch expansion of Link On Demand, a free, on-demand transportation service. The group marked the occasion with a ribbon-cutting event at Highland Heritage Regional Park.
Want to give it a try? Learn how to ride, see the service area and download the app at City.RideWithVia.com/LinkOnDemand
“We’ve spent the last two years listening to our older adults — and one of the biggest things we heard was, ‘we need help getting around.’ Today, we’re delivering on that promise,” said Commissioner George Teal.
Commissioners voted earlier this year to invest $2.9 million to expand Lone Tree’s popular service to Highlands Ranch. Now, people in Highlands Ranch can use the Link On Demand app to request curb-to-curb rides anywhere within the service area. All rides are free and accessible to everyone.
“This isn’t just a transportation program — it’s an investment in mobility, economic access and quality of life,” said Commissioner Abe Laydon. “Every dollar we spend connecting people to the places they need to go pays dividends in workforce participation and local spending.”
To start using the service, riders simply download the Link On Demand app, create an account, enter their pickup and drop-off location, and wait for a driver to arrive — usually within minutes. Or, call 719-212-2430 to schedule a ride. The service operates across both Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree.
There are two upcoming opportunities this week for you to get to know Link on Demand:
For updates about future events, sign up for email updates or follow Douglas County Government on social media.
“I want to thank all of our partners in Highlands Ranch and beyond who helped make this expansion possible. As Commissioners, it’s our job to find solutions that make life easier, and we’re proud to provide this service that puts people first,” said Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle.
“The City of Lone Tree is thrilled to see the continued expansion of the Link on Demand service into Highlands Ranch,” said Lone Tree Mayor Marissa Harmon. “As a city that’s seen firsthand the benefits of Link On Demand when we founded the service nearly 10 years ago, this expansion reflects the strong regional collaboration in Douglas County and our shared commitment to innovative, accessible and mobility transportation solutions for our citizens.”
About Link On Demand Link On Demand is a free, app-based ride service that connects users to key destinations within the service area. The service is designed to support a wide range of riders, including students, older adults and individuals with disabilities or those without access to a personal vehicle. Riders can request curb-to-curb trips using a mobile app or by calling 719-212-2430. Shared rides are dispatched in real time to improve access to appointments, work, school, essential services and more. Visit City.RideWithVia.com/LinkOnDemand

Every year, construction and maintenance crews repair sidewalks, restore pavement and refresh pavement markings on roads across Douglas County. And here’s where the projects will be in Highlands Ranch.
Starting in June from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, improvements will be made to East Dutch Creek Street, East Millistone Street, East Millistone Place and South Millistone Court.
There will also be two resurfacing projects – one on Cresthill Lane between Highlands Ranch Parkway and Gleneagles Village Parkway, and the other on Venneford Ranch between University Boulevard and Colorado Boulevard.
According to the county website, each street will be completed in phases throughout the summer. The first phase includes sidewalk repairs and curb ramp upgrades. These typically take between two-to-four weeks per neighborhood to be completed. However, work on a single block is about three-to-four days.
The second phase, which is expected to take about two-to-four hours per block, involves removing some of the top layer of asphalt. The final phase will place a new overlay, and is expected to take about four-to-eight hours per block to complete.
The county also plans on mailing information to residents and leaving door hangers before the work begins.
A new interactive roadway project map
In addition to neighborhood repairs, there are other spring and summer roadway projects taking place, which is why Douglas County has launched a new interactive map.
The map aims to help residents identify potential impacts to their commutes and help keep work zones safe.
According to the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, at a national level, there were more than 800 fatal crashes in work zones in 2022, which is the latest data available. The data estimates that there were 10 work zone fatalities in Colorado in 2022.
The Colorado Department of Transportation states that there were 23 crashes, resulting in 31 fatalities in Colorado in 2024, which was an increase from 16 fatalities in 2023.
To help prevent these crashes and fatalities, Douglas County’s new map indicates current county projects with an orange circle and current special events – such as the Highlands Ranch Mother’s Day 5K – with a blue circle.
Upcoming county projects and special events are represented by squares in the coordinating orange and blue colors.
By clicking on the circle or square, there is a description of the project, where it is taking place, when it is expected to be complete, who the company working on the project is and contact information for the special event program managers.
The interactive map can be found at tinyurl.com/Dougco-construction-map.
Highlands Ranch projects include include:
Douglas County’s U.S. 85 Widening from Highlands Ranch Parkway to C-470
Currently underway, the project is widening the highway from four to six lanes. The project also includes reconstructing a portion of South Santa Fe Drive from Highlands Ranch Parkway, extending north of the C-470 interchange to Dad Clark Gulch.
The project is anticipated to be complete by the end of this year.
Douglas County’s Kendrick Castillo Way/Plum Valley Lane project
Crews have begun to install a new traffic signal at the intersection of Kendrick Castillo Way and Plum Valley Lane. Throughout the project, traffic will be reduced to one lane in both north and southbound directions of Kendrick Castillo Way, according to the county website.
The anticipated end date for the project is mid-to-late August.
Douglas County’s C-470 Trail and University Boulevard pedestrian grade separation
Douglas County embarked on this project earlier this year after partnering with CDOT on a Safer Main Street Initiative.
The project involves constructing a grade separation for bicyclists and pedestrians using the C-470 Trail to cross over University Boulevard, instead of having bicyclists and pedestrians cross over eight lanes of traffic. This project also aims to improve traffic operations.
The project is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
Douglas County’s 2025 sidewalk repair
There will be concrete repair and adjacent landscaping restoration along the South Quebec Street median.
This work is expected to be finished by the end of May.
The much-awaited senior center off Highlands Ranch Parkway is inching towards completion. As it does, some residents are wondering if a new traffic signal on Highlands Ranch Parkway will accompany it. Despite concerns about safety, a traffic signal will not be installed at this time. “It doesn’t meet the appropriate…
As the U.S. Highway 85 Widening Project inches towards completion, drivers can expect changes to three major intersections in Highlands Ranch. Highlands Ranch will be the first to have partial Continuous Flow Intersections in Douglas County. Included within the U.S. 85 reconstruction project – which involves widening the roadway from…
Drivers who travel on University Boulevard near C-470 should plan for minor traffic impacts throughout this year as construction crews build a new pedestrian bridge. Drivers can expect weekday single-lane closures on northbound and southbound University Boulevard with occasional closures of the C-470 off-ramp onto University Boulevard, according to the county.…
Douglas County to close 3 elementary schools next year as enrollment falls

The Douglas County School District will close three elementary schools next year, becoming the latest K-12 system in metro Denver to shutter buildings because of declining enrollment.
The district’s seven-member Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday evening to approve the closure of three schools: Acres Green Elementary in Littleton and Heritage and Saddle Ranch elementaries in Highlands Ranch.
“We know a lot of families are very upset with the district, and we stand ready to support our families and our students with what ever they need moving forward,” Superintendent Erin Kane said.
Sixth-graders who attend elementary schools that feed into Highlands Ranch, Mountain Vista and ThunderRidge high schools also will move to middle schools, a plan that Kane previously said will help middle schools struggling with low enrollment.
The school closures go into effect on July 1, 2026.
More than 900 K-12 students attend the three schools, which also employ 217 educators, according to the district.
The district has guaranteed that staff members affected by the closures will be able to get another position within the district.
Before their vote, board members expressed how difficult the decision to close schools was for them and showed support for district workers in crafting their recommendation.
“This is hard,” board President Christy Williams said before the vote. “None of the seven of us want to be in this position.”
A few parents pushed back on the school closures during the meeting’s public comment session, including over what they said was a lack of transparency regarding the process used by district officials to decide which schools to close.
“We have said it over and over again… the transparency of this recommendation process is seriously lacking,” one parent said. “I understand the benefits of this consolidation. I’m not arguing against that. I’m arguing against the process of the pairing schools recommendation.
The Douglas County School District is the state’s third-largest district, enrolling 61,851 students as of October. That’s down 7% or 4,851 pupils from a decade ago, according to data from the Colorado Department of Education.
Statewide, K-12 public school enrollment has fallen for more than a decade as fewer Coloradans have babies. In metro Denver, high housing costs are also shifting where families live, meaning that districts, such as Douglas County, are also building new schools even as they close others.
Other districts also have closed schools or plan to because declining enrollment is putting financial pressure on their balance sheets, as schools are funded based on the number of students in their classrooms.
Denver Public Schools will close and restructure 10 schools at the end of the current academic year. Jeffco Public Schools has shuttered more than a dozen schools in recent years.
In Douglas County, declining enrollment has been most prominent in Highlands Ranch.
More than 7,400 students attend elementary school in Highlands Ranch, down from more than 10,400 children a decade ago, according to the school district. Eleven of the elementary schools that send students to the three high schools — Mountain Vista, Thunderridge and Highlands Ranch — in the suburb are projected to have fewer than 400 students, according to the resolution passed by the school board Tuesday.
District officials looked at 16 Highlands Ranch schools before recommending which ones the school board should close.
Under the district’s plan, Acres Green students will move to Fox Creek Elementary School, unless they are affected by school boundary changes also passed by the board Tuesday.
Heritage students will go to Summit View Elementary School, and Saddle Ranch pupils will go to Eldorado Elementary School unless they are affected by the boundary changes.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — The Douglas County School District Board of Education unanimously voted on Tuesday to consolidate six Highlands Ranch elementary schools.
Under the plan, Saddle Ranch Elementary will consolidate into Eldorado Elementary, Heritage Elementary will consolidate into Summit View Elementary, and Acres Green Elementary will consolidate into Fox Creek Elementary.
The consolidation will begin with the 2026-27 school year.
Prior to the vote, several board members said it was one of the most difficult decisions they've faced during their tenure.
"From the superintendent down… I’ve literally spoken to custodians, and they’ve all had opinions, and they’ve all mattered, and they’ve all been considered," said DCSD Board of Education member Brad Geiger.
"I have a lot of hope that this is going to make better opportunities for our students and our families, and I will work to make sure we’re able to live up to the promises that have been made," said fellow school board member Susan Meek.
Following the vote, DCSD issued a release, saying the decision came "after nearly two years of careful planning and evaluation" in order to address declining enrollment in Highlands Ranch. The schools were selected based on criteria outlined in this district policy.
Several parents attended the meeting, hoping to sway the board from its final decision.
"Losing the vibrance of children playing outside and a community gathering place is going to be a profound loss for us," said Cali Wolf, a Heritage Elementary parent.
Other Heritage Elementary School parents expressed concerns about class sizes ahead of Tuesday's vote.
"We’ve been told there’s 22 classrooms at Summit View and there’s 22 classrooms at Heritage, yet we’re going to have more students at Summit View," said Katie Bibler. "It’s all about lack of trust."
DCSD said Eldorado, Summit View and Fox Creek will receive "any necessary building improvements" ahead of the consolidations. The district said it also plans to continue maintenance at Saddle Ranch, Heritage and Acres Green so the playgrounds, fields, and other spaces are available for community use. DCSD said the three closing schools will house district programming, which will be determined next school year.
The school board said Tuesday that the closed schools will be used as bus stops following the consolidation.
The school board and district officials cited unequal growth in Douglas County as the reason for the consolidation. According to Geiger, communities like Sterling Ranch are booming as families with young children move to areas other than Highlands Ranch.
Data from DCSD shows 10,484 students were enrolled across Highlands Ranch's 18 elementary schools in 2014, but in 2028, that number is expected to plummet to 6,476 students across the schools.
In addition to the consolidation, the school board on Tuesday approved changes to the way the district classifies Highlands Ranch sixth graders.
Sixth grade will be moved to middle school beginning in the 2026-27 school year. This will only affect Highlands Ranch elementary schools that feed into Cresthill, Mountain Ridge and Ranch View middle schools. However, in a previous release, the school district said it is looking to create a timeline for moving sixth graders throughout the district to middle school.
The district is also making "minor elementary school boundary adjustments," which will take effect ahead of the 2026-27 school year.
