Rite Aid continues with bankruptcy as it plans to close 111 more stores. 21 of those locations are in Virginia, with the majority in Hampton Roads.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Rite Aid has released a list of another 111 stores slated for closure as the company continues with bankruptcy proceedings.

Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May, the second bankruptcy filing for the drug store chain in the last few years.

The company's store closing list has steadily grown to nearly 500 locations since then.

Rite Aid said it planned to keep stores open for the next few months as it tries to sell off assets.

Court documents following the bankruptcy announcement revealed Rite Aid initially planned to close 47 stores. Updated documents first expanded this list to include an additional 68 stores, then another 95 locations were added, followed by 151 more stores, and then 111 were disclosed in a May 30 filing.

If approved as proposed, a total of 474 locations across 14 states would close, according to bankruptcy filings. It's unclear if and when the proposal will be approved, or when locations would fully close.

Listed below are all Virginia Rite Aid stores listed in bankruptcy filings as slated for closure, with the latest round of stores listed in bold.

HAMPTON, Va. — The Trump administration has officially canceled a $20 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency intended to help mitigate frequent flooding in Hampton’s historic Aberdeen Gardens neighborhood.

Hampton learned in December it would receive the grant, and then by April was warned the grant may be canceled. The official word came this week.

Aberdeen Gardens, built from 1934 to 1938, is the first community designed by and for African-Americans in the United States. Residents in the neighborhood say they frequently have trouble getting to their vehicles or getting back home and often have to deal with water damage.

“This action is unjust, unlawful, and needlessly places hundreds of residents at increased risk,” said Mary-Carson Stiff, executive director of Wetlands Watch, a nonprofit partnering with the city on the grant project. “Aberdeen Gardens was depending on these improvements. The loss of this funding jeopardizes community health, safety, and violates the federal government’s promise to support neighborhood-level infrastructure projects across Virginia.”

Stiff stated in a press release that Wetlands Watch and the city of Hampton are exploring all options to appeal the termination of the grant.

“For 25 years, Wetlands Watch has aligned its work with the EPA’s statutory mission,” Stiff said. “This reversal betrays these widely-held values and threatens environmental progress nationwide.”

U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott toured the neighborhood in April, saying that a portion of the funding was set to go toward upgrading the neighborhood’s drainage system, with larger pipes and storm channels to better handle heavy rain and reduce flooding.

“We’re very disappointed that they’re kind of picking and choosing what they want to spend,” Scott said during that April visit, reacting to the news the grant had been placed on hold.

Rainey’s is a restaurant that will employ seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities, like her grandson who has autism. Rainey came up with the idea after her previous restaurant didn’t survive the pandemic.

“I wanted to get back in. At that time, (my grandson) had graduated high school and he was doing a lot of job searching but wasn’t landing anything," Rainey explained. "I didn’t want him to be judged. I didn’t want him to have to go through trying to prove himself that he’s good enough to be someplace.”

She encourages anyone who has a disability or knows someone who does and is looking for a job to stop by and talk.

For Rainey, this has been a labor of love and she’s anticipating a lot of love from the community in return.

“I have a lot of people that are cheering me on. I have a lot of people that have been anticipating me opening with the countdown," Rainey said.

The restaurant is located at 1771 N. King St. just outside Langley Air Force Base and opens May 31.

HAMPTON, Va. — A new government report is highlighting a variety of concerns at the Hampton VA Medical Center. This, of course, comes as the Trump Administration makes cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs, cuts that are impacting the medical center.

Staff at the Hampton VA feel burnt out and fatigued. That's according to findings in a 55-page report from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General.

Watch: Hampton VA Medical Center confirms employees let go as Trump admin makes cuts

The report says it's because of a "heavy workload" and that was before some employees at the medical center were laid off in February 2025.

Other big concerns in the report?

An automated process at the VA that potentially causes some providers to not receive lab results. There are vulnerabilities in certain communication procedures, and unclear parking signs cause trouble, too, according to the report.

Watch: New leadership starts at Hampton VA Medical Center

The concerns came to light after an inspection of the facility August 19-21 2024.

“In big letters, it said ’Terminated,’” medical center employee LaShavia Prather said, recalling an e-mail she got telling her she had lost her job.

Prather was one of the employees laid off from the Hampton VA in February.

News 3 first spoke with her a few days after she was laid off. We spoke with her again in March when she learned she and others who were laid off would be getting their job back.

While bringing employees back may help address some of the workload concerns at the medical center, Prather told News 3 during the March interview she still wasn’t sure how long she’ll have a job.

"I’m technically still under my probationary period. My probation is not up until May 19. So even though we were allowed to come back, to me, it’s still too many questions and not enough answers," said Prather.

Something else that could help is the opening of a new VA medical center in Chesapeake. News 3 was there for the ribbon cutting April 10 when U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins addressed issues with the overall VA system.

Watch: Ribbon-cutting ceremony held for new Chesapeake VA clinic

“We are a service organization and that’s changing right now," said, in part, as he spoke to the crowd ahead of the ribbon- cutting.

The government report also notes the Hampton VA Medical Center is taking steps to improve care, including adding weekend clinics and setting expectations for staff and leaders to address complaints in a timely manner.

News reached out to the medical center’s spokesperson and a spokesperson for the union representing workers at the medical center. The medical center’s spokesperson sent News 3 a statement that says, in part, aggressive recruitment, incentives, job fairs, and targeted campaigns are being used to help fill vacancies.

VA Hampton Health Care System is one of the fastest-growing VA health care systems in the nation, recently earning a 4-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for quality of care. To better serve local Veterans, we opened the new North Battlefield VA Outpatient Clinic April 17 and are opening the Western Branch Community Based Outpatient Clinic in 2026. These new locations are part of a strategic growth plan to expand care delivery throughout Hampton Roads.Like all other health care organizations across the country, VA Hampton Health Care System is navigating a nationwide shortage of nursing and primary care professionals. To address these challenges, we are continuing aggressive recruitment efforts, utilizing incentives, job fairs, and targeted campaigns to fill vacancies. Additionally, we collaborate with a large network of community providers to ensure Veterans receive timely health care when and where it’s convenient for them.
