HAMPTON, Va. — Cory Bigsby, the Hampton man currently serving a 45-year sentence for killing his son, Codi, will not face child neglect charges following a judge's decision Thursday.

Bigsby was facing 30 child neglect and abuse charges for his four sons, including Codi. The charges are unrelated to Codi's disappearance. However, the charges were nolle prossed Thursday, which pauses prosecution on the charges with the option to bring them back later.

Hampton Commonwealth's Attorney Anton Bell said he does not want to prosecute Bigsby for now because of his two other children, one of whom who would have served as a primary witness. The delay is because both children are currently in therapy and counseling.

However Bigsby's defense pushed back against Bell's argument, asking the court to move forward with the trial or dismiss the charges.

"The defense is shameful, they should be ashamed of themselves" said Bell.

Bigby's defense said the ongoing uncertainty is unfair to their client, and he says he doesn't want these charges hanging over his head.

News 3's Kelsey Jones asked Bell how he felt about the motion.

"It's the right thing to do. At the end of the day, it's not about winning. This man has already received 45 years for his sentence, and truth be told, I wish it was more. But the reality of it is we're not going to jeopardize the mental health of the children just to put a case on," Bell said.

Bigsby was in court and looked unfazed. His defense team spoke to News 3 after the ruling.

"They don't even have the dates for these charges. All the dates say from February 1 of 2021 to February 1 of 2022. What type of charge is that? When did that happen? That's why it's not fair," said lead defense attorney Curtis Brown.

Bigsby's attorney says they will appeal the decision.

HAMPTON, Va. — Joint Base Langley-Eustis and National Transportation Safety Board officials gave an update after a plane crash at Langley Air Force Base killed a famed aerobatic pilot just days before an air show.

The MX Aircraft MXS flown by Rob Holland crashed just after 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The MXS is an aerobatic airplane, often seen in air shows.

Langley's annual Air Power Over Hampton Roads air show is scheduled for this weekend. In a release on Friday, Joint Base Langley-Eustis said the air show will go on as scheduled. All other aircraft have arrived at the base.

Gates will open at 9 a.m. with "fly time" beginning at 10:30 a.m. Off-base parking reservations are currently still available at the Hampton Coliseum and the Virginia Peninsula Community College.

NTSB Investigator Dan Boggs said investigators arrived this morning, and the aircraft has been removed from the area. Military operations were not impacted by the crash, officials said.

Additionally, the safety board is expected to release a report in approximately two weeks. A probable cause of the crash, along with other factors, will be detailed in a final report in 12-24 months.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis has not officially identified Holland as the pilot, but speaking with reporters Thursday evening, installation commander Col. Matt Altman said, "We lost a great friend to the Air Force, and an airman, and a legend of air power."

Altman said the aircraft was arriving at Langley and landing when the accident happened.

"There was no act," Altman said when asked if the pilot was practicing for the air show. "It was just arriving at the airport."

HAMPTON, Va. — A new government report is highlighting a variety of concerns at the Hampton VA Medical Center. This, of course, comes as the Trump Administration makes cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs, cuts that are impacting the medical center.

Staff at the Hampton VA feel burnt out and fatigued. That's according to findings in a 55-page report from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General.

The concerns came to light after an inspection of the facility August 19-21 2024.

“In big letters, it said ’Terminated,’” medical center employee LaShavia Prather said, recalling an e-mail she got telling her she had lost her job.

Prather was one of the employees laid off from the Hampton VA in February.

News 3 first spoke with her a few days after she was laid off. We spoke with her again in March when she learned she and others who were laid off would be getting their job back.

While bringing employees back may help address some of the workload concerns at the medical center, Prather told News 3 during the March interview she still wasn’t sure how long she’ll have a job.

"I’m technically still under my probationary period. My probation is not up until May 19. So even though we were allowed to come back, to me, it’s still too many questions and not enough answers," said Prather.

Something else that could help is the opening of a new VA medical center in Chesapeake. News 3 was there for the ribbon cutting April 10 when U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins addressed issues with the overall VA system.

Lashavia Prather, who was laid off at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Hampton, expressed her frustration, saying, "I feel like they just did one of those 'eeny, meeny, miny, moe' things and just whatever name it landed on, that's who they sent the email out to."

Prather worked as a secretary at the hospital for about 10 months before her job was cut in February, emphasizing the importance of behind-the-scenes roles: "Not only do you need nurses and physicians, you also need individuals to be behind the scenes."

As a military veteran, Prather joins many across the country seeking new jobs due to cuts tied to the new Department of Government Efficiency. Sultan Camp, who works at the Hampton Roads Veterans Employment Center, noted an uptick in calls from recently laid-off government workers. Some are worried about the possibility of more cuts. In a military-heavy area like southeastern Virginia, the impact could be significant.

Dr. Bob McNab, chair of the economics department at Norfolk's Old Dominion University, explained, "We are trying to project a future that is not only uncertain by the end of the year, it's uncertain by the end of the month."

McNab highlighted the educational qualifications of government workers, stating, "So, when a federal government employee is laid off, it requires 1.6 workers to produce the same amount of income to the local economy."

He warned that losing staff on such a large scale would ripple through services on which many depend.

"If you're a veteran seeking care, and the Veterans Administration cuts 80,000 employees, by definition, your wait times are going to increase and the quality of your care when you finally get it is probably going to decline," McNab added.

About a month after receiving her pink slip, Prather was allowed to return to her job. However, uncertainty remains. She said, "Even though we were allowed to come back, to me, it's still too many questions and not enough answers" about the road ahead.

In response, the Department of Veterans Affairs released this statement to WTKR News 3:

"As we reform VA, we are guided by the fact that even though the Biden Administration astronomically grew the department’s budget and number of employees, VA wait times and backlogs increased. We are doing things differently. Our goal is to increase productivity, eliminate waste and bureaucracy, increase efficiency, and improve health care and benefits to Veterans. We will accomplish this without making cuts to health care or benefits to Veterans or VA beneficiaries.

"We’re conducting a comprehensive, data-driven review of all agencies and processes within the department with the goal of fixing the problems that have kept VA on the Government Accountability Office’s high-risk list. We’re going to maintain VA’s mission-essential jobs like doctors, nurses and claims processors, while phasing out non-mission essential roles like DEI officers. The savings we achieve will be redirected to Veteran health care and benefits.

"Our goal is to reduce the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) positions to 2019 levels – roughly 398,000 employees – down from roughly 470,000 employees currently, which is about a 15 percent decrease. But those staff changes have not happened yet."

HAMPTON, Va. — At Vanguard Brewpub in Hampton Friday, food was loaded up and taken to veterans at the Hampton VA medical center to celebrate Easter.

Volunteers from the Hampton Sheriff’s Office, including Sheriff Karen Bowden, picked up pans of pulled pork, baked beans, and potato salad made in-house at the brewpub.

This was organized by Rick Mulligan, who runs a nonprofit in Hampton Roads that helps veterans.

This was the first time he’s organized an Easter meal, but not the first time he’s partnered with the brewpub to feed veterans.

Both Mulligan and the brewpub’s president, Randy Thomas, said as veterans themselves, they’re glad to be able to help fellow veterans.

“One of the gals I know that works out there, she said, ‘I don’t how. Easter may be a little shaky because, sometimes, other places can’t come through.’ She said, ‘What do you think?’ I said, ‘We will pull something together because that’s what we do," Mulligan explained.

“A lot of people sit in the hospital over there. I’m sure that they’re lonely, they don’t have family members. To bring this community together and have that event for them is, I think, probably life-altering for them especially emotionally," Thomas said.

Bowden said she wanted to volunteer because it's part of what the sheriff's office stands for.

"We talk about partnership and collaboration. These are the things that the Hampton Sheriff's Office engages in," Bowden said.

Other food, including some from area restaurants, was also donated to help feed the veterans at the VA Friday.

Area elementary school students made Easter cards for the veterans as well.
