The city is marking Affordable Housing Month with a major expansion and new community openings.

FREMONT, CA — The City of Fremont is celebrating Affordable Housing Month with the rollout of 560 new affordable housing units in 2025, marking a significant investment in long-term housing stability for low-income residents.

Kicking off the milestone is the May 15 grand opening of Fremont Family Apartments—54 units built in partnership with Abode Housing Development and Community of Christ, designed for families and individuals at risk of homelessness.

Located at 34320 Fremont Blvd., the complex includes social services, energy-efficient features, and child-friendly amenities just steps from public transportation and Northgate Park.

“Affordable housing transforms lives,” said Mayor Raj Salwan. “When families have stable housing, they gain the security to pursue opportunity… Fremont is committed to creating housing that empowers families and builds a more inclusive, thriving city.”

In total, five new developments will come online this year, including Bell Street Gardens—a former motel transformed into 126 affordable units—and Osgood North and South, which utilize prefabricated construction to lower building costs. The city has committed more than $30 million to support the efforts, with another $34 million allocated for future projects.

The expansion aligns with Fremont’s Housing Element goal to build nearly 13,000 new homes by 2031, over half of which must be affordable under state housing mandates.

FREMONT, CA — Yes, you read that headline correctly. The government will be dropping millions of Mediterranean fruit flies over the Bay Area this week.

That's because areas of Alameda County, including the cities of Fremont and Newark, as well as Santa Clara County, including the city of Milpitas, have had a problem with these invasive flies, which represent a major threat to California's agriculture, accoriding to the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Given that these tiny flies are capable of infesting more than 250 cultivated and wild fruits, they've been dubbed the "most important agricultural pest in the world."

As first reported by SFGATE, a specialized government aircraft will begin ejecting tons of these insects over Alameda and Santa Clara counties soon, according to CDFA.

As CDFA continues to fight a war against these pests, part of the eradication campaign has involved what is called the sterile insect technique. Here's how it works: Male fruit flies are sterilized in a special facility before they are released from an aircraft. They then find wild female flies, which results in non-viable offspring.

Residents of these areas have been previously told to report large sightings of these flies, but are advised to keep in mind they will likely see more soon because of this technique.

While it might sound odd, the technique is known as one of the most sustainable methods of eradicating Mediterranean fruit flies and one that abstains from using chemicals.

Last year, the department announced that fruit fly quarantines had been lifted across Contra Costa, Los Angeles, Orange, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Santa Clara, San Diego, Riverside and Ventura Counties, freeing local commercial agriculture from restrictions.

But a map published by CDFA indicates that parts of Alameda and Santa Clara counties have been under this quarantine for the Mediterranean fruit fly since December.

This means moving produce in and out of the areas designated by the map is prohibited, according to CDFA. Find more information here.

Castolo B. Felisilda, known as “Cast or Bhoy” was born to Lucio Sr Orias Felisilda & Felipa Bersabal on November 30, 1954 in Bohol, Philippines.

Cast was loving, kind, quiet, humble and a simple man who left his Legacy with his family he dearly loved and stayed with until he gained his wings. His last wish was to see, hear and be alert & present at home with all the kids and the funny jokes he had with PapaTroll. He voiced how blessed, thankful and loved he felt during his journey surrounded by family and extended families.

Cast was also a Military man proud to serve his Country and enjoyed the stories he shared with his daughters & grandchildren through his lifetime. He spoke of honor, courage, respect, being humble and kind.

Cast loved Martial Arts and was a 3rd degree, 2nd Assistant Black Belt in different styles but he loved Aikido and the eskrima sticks which he taught self defense moves to his children. He also enjoyed watching Bruce Lee and Martial Arts movies.

Cast was an avid bowler who bowled multiple 300 games, 800 series and won tourneys. He shared his love for bowling with family and friends and enjoyed this sport so much that he joined multiple Leagues and traveled to Las Vegas for tournaments, bowled in different Cities throughout California and met so many people from all walks of life, became really close to so many and became a magnet for friends, extended family who enjoyed their talks, jokes and so many funny stories shared.

Cast firmly believes that we are a borrowed vessel to live life with love, courage and kindness. He is not gone. He lives on in our surroundings, in our memories but most importantly in our hearts.

2025 Fremont Football Flag Registration

FREMONT, CA — Haven't gotten your Real ID yet? It's not too late to get the ball rolling ahead of the May 7 deadline.

From now until June 27, the Fremont Department of Motor Vehicles office will open an hour early every day to help meet the rush of residents scheduling appointments to get the new travel identification card.

The office, which is located at 4287 Central Ave., will be open an hour early for Real ID appointments only.

California officials are urging residents to get their Real IDs as soon as possible, especially if they plan to travel by air after May 7.

While there’s no penalty for missing the deadline, travelers without a Real ID — or another approved form of ID, like a passport — could face serious delays at airport security or not be able to travel at all.

"Passengers who present a state-issued identification that is not REAL ID compliant and who do not have another acceptable alternative (e.g., passport) can expect to face delays, additional screening and the possibility of not being permitted into the security checkpoint," according to a recent news release from TSA.

Appointments are filling up fast, so if you haven’t started the process yet, now’s the time. Make an appointment here.

Across the state, 17 other DMV offices are opening early to accommodate the rush through late June.

“We’re excited to offer Californians earlier hours this spring and summer,” stated DMV Director Steve Gordon. “These additional appointments will make it easier than ever to obtain a REAL ID.”
