The Catholic Diocese of Dallas and Fort Worth says there are more than two and a half million Catholics across North Texas.

Most were closed for easter Monday, but following the news of the passing of Pope Francis, Cathedral Guadalupe opened its doors to mourners.

Flowers were placed outside the cathedral, and tears streamed down the faces of some who’d arrived to pay respects.

Black drapes hung above the entrance symbolize a church in mourning.

“Sad. Very, very sad,” said Dallas Catholic Sandra Sanchez.

Sanchez came within arm’s length of Pope Francis during a December visit to the Vatican.

“In my opinion, he was the best,” said Sanchez.

Inside Cathedral Guadelupe, a noon mass of the intentions for his holiness was led by Bishop Edward Burns of the Diocese of Dallas, whom Pope Francis appointed to the position in 2016.

“His kindness, support, and trust in me have been a profound source of confidence,” said Bishop Burns.

Known as the people’s pope, the late pontiff sealed his legacy as a reformer and pastor who forged deep connections with the vulnerable.

After a health scare earlier this year that left him hospitalized for a month, Pope Francis made a surprise appearance during easter celebrations Sunday.

“It was striking but not a surprise that even in his final days, he chose to be among god’s people,” said Bishop Burns.

From Dallas to Fort Worth, the faithful are absorbing news of the sudden loss while acknowledging the poetry of his passing.

“Big messages for god, like something special,” said Sanchez.

Catholics will pray the rosary twice a day for nine days at Cathedral Guadalupe at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The Diocese of Fort Worth will celebrate two masses for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis: Wednesday at 6 p.m. at St. Patrick Cathedral and Thursday at 6 p.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church.

Michael Olson, bishop of the Diocese of Fort Worth, was appointed by Pope Francis to his position in November 2013.

Bishop Olson said in a statement, "His entire pontificate, from his first decision at the age of 76 to be called “Francis” after Saint Francis of Assisi, was dedicated to mindfulness for the poor and those most overlooked, our responsibility to be stewards of the ecology, and the struggle to be conformed to Christ crucified."

Fort Worth, Texas — Marcus & Millichap has facilitated the sale of 913 Houston Street, an 11,760-square-foot vacant retail property in downtown Fort Worth. Situated across from the Fort Worth Convention Center, the three-level building was originally built in 1959 and comprises a basement, main floor and a mezzanine level.

Roughly a quarter mile from 913 Houston Street, approximately $2 billion of new construction is underway, including a $350 million campus for Texas A&M University and a $200 million expansion of the Omni Fort Worth Hotel.

Joe Santelli of Marcus & Millichap’s Dallas office marketed the property on behalf of the seller, a local developer, and procured the buyer, a local investment group, in the transaction.

Pottstown, Pa. — JLL Capital Markets has arranged the sale of Suburbia Shopping Center, a 154,219-square-foot retail property located in Pottstown, approximately 20 miles east of Reading. Originally built in 2003, the property spans 25.6 acres. GIANT grocery store anchors the center, which was 85 percent leased at the time of sale. Additional tenants at the center include Dollar Tree, Starbucks Coffee, UPS Store and Tower Health. Jim Galbally and Patrick Higgins of JLL Capital Markets Investment Sales and Advisory team represented the seller, Gambone Management Co., in the transaction. Powell W. McKinney, Texas — McKinney City Council has granted final approval for Long Branch, a $1.3 billion mixed-use development located at the northwest corner of U.S. Highway 75 and the future U.S. 380 bypass in McKinney. Creation, in partnership with Horizon Capital Holdings and Vaulter, is the developer. Spanning 155 acres, the project is expected to include approximately 1,600 multifamily homes, 135,000 square feet of retail anchored by a 65,000-square-foot grocer, a 318,600-square-foot office campus with two six-story buildings, a 100-room hotel and a 910-space structured parking garage. Additionally, the project will feature 6,000 square feet of pedestrian trails, six acres of green space, outdoor gathering areas, open-air dining options, as well as landscaping.

GFF Design is handling architectural design for the project — which is currently underway — and LGE Design Build is leading construction efforts. Infrastructure work is expected to begin later this year, with vertical development following soon after.

Christie’s to Auction $60 M. in Art from Anne and Sid Bass’s Fort Worth Home

Christie’s will sell nine works from the Bass House, designed by architect Paul Rudolph. With estimates totaling more than $60 million, those works will head to auction this May as part of its 20th century evening sale in New York.

The group includes works by Mark Rothko, Alexander Calder, Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella, Agnes Martin, Gino Severini, and Morris Louis from the collection of Sid and Anne Bass, whose home in Fort Worth, Texas, was carefully custom-designed by Rudolph with displaying art as a top priority.

“You can count on one or two hands the number of houses in America that fit that description, which is what makes this so special,” Max Carter, Christie’s vice chairman for 20th and 21st century art, told ARTnews. “The works of art themselves weren’t just sort of incidental decor. They’re really fundamental to the whole experience. And each work was hung in its own very specific space.”

Related Articles

The top lot is Mark Rothko’s No. 4 (Two Dominants) [Orange, Plum, Black], 1950–51, which Christie’s said has an estimate “in the region of $35 million.” It was displayed near Frank Stella’s Itata (1964) from the artist’s “Notched-V” series (estimate of $6 million–$8 million). Ellsworth Kelly’s Blue Black Red (1964), which hung in the playroom, is the third-highest lot, with an estimate of $4 million–$6 million.

Carter said the pieces were collected over 15 years but mostly remained in the same locations after they were first installed. “It’s a house where everything kind of fits seamlessly together and why each work of art stands on its own.”

Other works from the Bass House that will be included in Christie’s 20th century evening sale are Gamma Upsilon by Morris Louis (est. $2 million–$3 million), Stella’s Firuzabad III (est. $1 million–$2 million), Agnes Martin’s Untitled #11 (est. $3.5 million–$5.5 million) and Untitled #2 (est. $1.5 million–$2.5 million), Alexander Calder’s hanging mobile Gypsophila (1949), and Gino Severini’s painting Danseuse (est. $1.5 million–$2.5 million).

In addition to Danseuse‘s bright colors, and its Futurist and Cubist themes, the artwork was painted ca. 1915–16, three decades earlier than Calder’s mobile, and is from one of the Italian artist’s most prized series. “It was in Severini’s first show in America, which was Alfred Stieglitz with his 291 gallery,” Carter said, pointing out its depiction of a dancer, which he noted reflected Anne’s love and support of the New York City Ballet.

Carter also highlighted the painting’s “rare and amazing” history. Stieglitz first sold Danseuse to John Quinn, the great lawyer and modernist European art collector who was instrumental in the 1913 Armory Show. Quinn’s estate sold it to the famous civil rights lawyer Arthur Springarn in 1927, and then the Basses purchased it in the 1980s.

Billionaire Sid Richardson Bass amassed his wealth in the oil industry and later became a major Disney shareholder. He ranked on the annual ARTnews Top 200 Collectors list between 1990 and 1992. Anne was an American philanthropist, socialite, and art collector who ranked on the annual ARTnews Top 200 Collectors list between 1990 and 1994.

The couple divorced in 1988. In 2020, Anne Bass died at the age of 78.

Prior to the Bass House consignment, the auction house sold twelve works from Anne Bass’s 960 Fifth Avenue apartment for $363.1 million with fees—including pieces by Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, and Mark Rothko—on a presale estimate of $250 million, in May 2022. Carter called that auction “one of the greatest sales of all time.”

And last November, Christie’s sold Ed Ruscha’s Standard Station, Ten-Cent Western Being Torn in Half (1964) from the collection of Sid Bass for $68.3 million on an estimate of $50 million. The record-setting work was featured in a Ruscha retrospective that debuted at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and went to LACMA last year.

Christie’s 20th Century evening sale will take place on May 12. Ten additional works from the Bass House will also be sold as part of Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary day sale on May 15.
