A pedestrian was hit by a car Tuesday morning in Elk Grove, California Highway Patrol logs show.

CHP was dispatched around 8:28 a.m. to Calvine Road and Vintage Park Drive.

It was unclear what caused the crash. A person was taken to a nearby hospital and a possible minor injury was reported.

A beloved Bay Area coffee shop is making its way to Elk Grove.

According to an Instagram announcement from @norcalshopping, Philz Coffee is expanding to The Village, a new retail development currently under construction at the intersection of Elk Grove Blvd and Big Horn Blvd.

“When The Village is complete, it will be more than a shopping center,” reads the post. “This will be a community hub, with open space, community events, and all of your favorite restaurants.”

Spanning 127,000 square feet, The Village is set to debut in mid-2025 with a lineup of tenants that includes Yard House and Mendocino Farms.

Founded in 2003 by Phil Jaber and his son Jacob in San Francisco’s Mission District, Philz is celebrated for its handcrafted, pour-over coffee made from sustainably sourced green beans. Roasted in Oakland, each blend is customized to highlight unique flavors and aromas.

With more than 75 locations across California and Chicago—including three in the Sacramento Valley—Philz offers a diverse selection of light, medium, and dark roast blends, along with teas and light bites like croissants, cookies, muffins, and their vegan plant-powered sandwich.

Gift store chain Spencer’s is hosting a grand opening celebration for its newest Sacramento-area location.

The iconic mall retailer opened a storefront at the Laguna Crossroads shopping center in Elk Grove on March 16, according to a Spencer’s customer service associate.

To celebrate the brand’s expansion into Elk Grove, Spencer’s will hold an event in April with giveaways and other goodies for customers, the company said in a Wednesday news release.

Here’s what you should know:

Spencer’s opened its first brick-and-mortar storefront in 1963 in New Jersey and has since grown to more than 670 stores across the United States and Canada, according to the company’s website.

“Spencer’s is the ultimate destination to find the latest edgy, outrageous and unique accessories and apparel,” the company said in the release.

The retail chain sells a variety of trendy clothing, accessories, gag gifts and knick-knacks, including novelty T-shirts, hats, backpacks and body jewelry.

Locations also carry home decor, drinkware and sex and wellness items.

Spencer’s is open at 7601 Laguna Blvd. Suite 120, in Elk Grove.

The space, which neighbors a Hallmark stationary store, was formerly occupied by VIVI Fashion.

Spencer’s is hosting a grand opening bash at its Laguna Crossroads location on Saturday, April 12, from 1 to 5 p.m.

According to the release, the first 100 customers who attend the opening will receive $10 gift cards for the store, “along with sweet treats, freebies, giveaways and more.”

In addition to the Elk Grove store, there are four other Spencer’s stores open in the Sacramento area.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — A new restaurant is being planned for Elk Grove in a large space left vacant by a national dining chain.

Interlude Kitchen will be the newest venture for local restaurateur Allen Kou, who also owns Prelude Kitchen and Bar and Zinfandel Grille in Sacramento. The newly planned restaurant will replace Romano’s Macaroni Grill at the Laguna Gateway Center on Laguna Boulevard.

“The concept is similar to what we’re doing at Zinfandel Grill and Prelude Kitchen and Bar,” Kou said. “It’s going to be an upscale restaurant focused on farm-to-fork.”

Kou started in the restaurant business at 14 by bussing tables and washing dishes for his parents at Bamboo Inn in Elk Grove. He eventually took over the Chinese restaurant after his parents retired in 2012 and operated the eatery for five years.

He later bought Zinfandel Grille with his business partner in 2017 and opened Prelude in 2021.

Plans for the new eatery will include incorporating a wood-fire oven and grill, pending approval from building and health departments from Sacramento County. Kou said the implementation of wood-fired cooking will add flavor to the dishes.

“You get a lot of really good caramelization, and I think it really highlights the ingredients because you don’t have to manipulate the flavor profiles as much,” Kou said.

Tom Patterson will serve as Interlude’s executive chef. He also oversees the kitchens at Zinfandel Grill and Prelude Kitchen & Bar.

The restaurant plans to offer a menu of modern American cuisine with French and Italian influences. Menu items include wood-fired steaks, pork chops, freshly made pastas and seasonal dishes.

“We change up our menus pretty significantly with the seasons,” the owner noted. “So, we usually overhaul about 80 to 90% of the menu each season. We’ll keep some staples on, but it will have a different setup depending on what’s in season.”

When Macaroni Grill closed, Kou took the opportunity to reach out to the broker for the space and put together a proposal.

“The ownership group there really wanted a regional operator that was not a chain restaurant because there’s quite a few of those in Elk Grove,” Kou said.

Interlude is tentatively scheduled to open by the end of the year, pending approval of permits from the health and building departments.
