About the Event

Mariachi music encourages creativity and allows students to learn about their culture and represent it with pride. It is imperative to provide students with invaluable opportunities to showcase their talents through live performances, enabling them to hone their skills and cultivate confidence as aspiring artists and musicians.

Southern California schools with students from 6th grade through college will participate in this Mariachi event. We are proud of their dedication to continuing their learning and love for this genre of music and hope to inspire younger audiences to follow their passions as well.

Seating & Free Parking

The location will provide ample seating in the stadium stands and more free parking options in Downey High’s parking lots off of Brookshire Ave. (at Firestone Blvd. and just south of 5th St, near the Aquatic Center pool), as well as off Lakewood Blvd., at 3rd St.

We still encourage everyone to walk, use public transit, carpool or use rideshare services (like Lyft or Uber) to lessen the potential traffic congestion as everyone is arriving at the same time.

This fun, free event is open to all ages and includes a day of entertainment, music, and young talent. Bring your appetite as food trucks will have a variety of tasty meals available for purchase.

Serious Charges and Archdiocese Response

Arriaga faces five serious charges related to the abuse of a child, with one identified victim so far. However, law enforcement officials have stated that they suspect there may be other victims, and detectives from the Special Victims Unit are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The alleged abuse incidents reportedly occurred on February 8 and 9, with charges including assault with intent to commit a sexual act on a minor. According to court documents, these events were among those leading to Arriaga’s arrest.

In response to the allegations, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles removed Father Arriaga from his position at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Downey. The Archdiocese has expressed its commitment to child protection, emphasizing a long-standing history of reporting abuse and taking preventative measures. "The archdiocese has a long history of commitment to protecting children and reporting and preventing abuse," the statement said.

Zero-Tolerance Policy and Churchgoer Notifications

The Archdiocese also reiterated its "zero-tolerance policy," which ensures that anyone found to have harmed a minor is immediately removed from their position permanently. Arriaga’s removal from ministry aligns with this policy, with the church formally notifying parishioners during weekend masses. A statement was read at both Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and other church locations, informing the congregation that Arriaga had been "removed from ministry as a result of a recent report of alleged sexual misconduct involving a minor."

This incident has brought renewed attention to the ongoing efforts within the Catholic Church to address allegations of sexual misconduct, with many advocating for stronger protections for vulnerable individuals within the community.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities continue to encourage anyone with further information to come forward.

A Roman Catholic priest serving in Downey has been arrested for alleged sexual misconduct with a minor.

The Rev. Jaime Arriaga, who was ordained in June of last year, surrendered to law enforcement on Thursday, the day after the Archdiocese of Los Angeles received a report “alleging sexual misconduct involving a minor,” church officials said in a statement.

The Archdiocese reported the allegation to law enforcement and removed Arriaga from ministry, officials said. He had been serving as a diocesan priest at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Downey since January 2024, first as a transitional deacon and then as a priest, though he has since been scrubbed from the Archdiocese’s website.

Angelus, the news arm of the Archdiocese, said Arriaga, 41, also served at St. Louis of France in La Puente prior to his ordination.

“The Archdiocese has a long-standing commitment to the protection of minors and the reporting and prevention of abuse,” church officials said in a statement. “Allegations of misconduct against anyone serving in the Archdiocese are reported to law enforcement, fully investigated and, under the Zero-Tolerance Policy, anyone who is found to have harmed a minor is permanently removed from any capacity in the Archdiocese. ”

Jail records show Arriaga is being held without bail at Men’s Central Jail. His next appearance in court is scheduled for June 5.
