Michigan State University is proud to again partner with Apple for an innovative program to uplift and improve operations of small and medium manufacturing companies across the United States. The Apple Manufacturing Academy will open this summer in downtown Detroit’s First National Building, offering both in-person and virtual programming.

In a recent news announcement, Apple outlined a new pledge to build upon its long history of investing in American innovation and advanced high-skill manufacturing, including a new program partnering with MSU to train and support the next generation of U.S. manufacturers. The Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit will be the first of its kind in the United States and is expected to be operational in the summer of 2025.

“The Apple Manufacturing Academy will train businesses across America to implement smart manufacturing techniques that are creating opportunity and shaping the future of technology,” said Sabih Khan, Apple’s senior vice president of Operations. “Apple is proud to work with suppliers in all 50 states — and starting this summer, we’re excited to work with Michigan State University to expand American manufacturing leadership and help even more companies innovate and grow.”

The new Apple Manufacturing Academy will be based out of Detroit, but open to companies nationwide. Apple engineers, along with experts from Michigan State University, will consult with small- and medium-sized businesses on how they can implement artificial intelligence, or AI, and smart manufacturing techniques.

The academy will offer free in-person and online courses, with training curriculum that teaches workers vital skills like project management and manufacturing process optimization, as well as vocational and leadership skills for individuals and small and medium businesses. The courses will help drive productivity, efficiency and quality in companies’ supply chains. Consulting services to the manufacturing companies will be offered both virtually and in person.

“With our strong programs in supply chain, logistics, engineering and packaging and our commitment to be an industry leader in AI advancements, Michigan State is a perfect partner for this new effort, and we greatly appreciate the ongoing collaboration with Apple,” said MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D. “Further, this project perfectly aligns with our mission around community outreach and our desire to solve the world’s problems, and we look forward to working side by side with manufacturing companies to transform this essential industry.”

MSU also partners with Apple on the Apple Developer Academy, with support from the Gilbert Family Foundation. This highly successful academy, located in downtown Detroit, has graduated roughly 200 participants annually since 2021, with another exciting group planned to graduate this summer. Michigan confirms 2nd measles case of 2025

KENT COUNTY, Mich. – Michigan has confirmed its second measles case of 2025 in an adult in Kent County.

The health department said the infected adult had recently traveled abroad before returning to the U.S. and traveling between Michigan and New Jersey.

“Measles is a highly contagious disease that continues to circulate both in the U.S. and globally,” said Dr. Adam London, Health Officer at the KCHD. “This case is a reminder of how quickly measles can spread and the importance of vaccination. We urge residents to check their immunization status and to get vaccinated, especially if planning to travel internationally or into areas with active measles outbreaks.”

Health officials said measles spreads easily through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. Measles can stay in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves and continue to infect others.

The Detroit Metro Airport is on the list of places where people may have been exposed to measles. The areas include the Delta Sky Club in DTW near gate A68 from 11:20 a.m. until 4 p.m., and DTW on March 27 at 6:45 p.m. until 12:01 a.m. on March 28.

“Our top priority is the safety of our customers, employees and tenants. The standard protocol in cases like this is for the CDC to work directly with the affected airline to contact passengers who may have been exposed to the infected traveler. Our cleaning staff follows standard airport cleaning protocols and will implement additional procedures if required by federal and state health authorities.”

Dates, times, and locations where people may have been exposed to measles:

Anyone at the locations at the times listed above should monitor themselves for symptoms for 21 days after they were exposed. If you experience symptoms, you should contact your healthcare provider before seeking in-person care to prevent exposure to other people.

“Measles can lead to serious complications, especially in young children, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems,” said Dr. Kristin Oldenberg, Medical Director at KCHD. “Fortunately, the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and highly effective at preventing measles. Two doses of the vaccine provide 97% protection against the disease.”

The first symptoms of measles usually show up seven to 14 days after exposure, but they can take as long as 21 days to appear.

Symptoms include:

Two to three days after the initial symptoms begin, Koplik spots may appear inside the mouth. These are tiny white spots that show up on the inner cheeks, gums, and roof of the mouth.

Three to five days after symptoms begin, the measles rash may appear. This is a rash that is red, raised, and blotchy. It usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.

If you believe you have measles, you should call your doctor or emergency room so they can prepare and avoid exposing others to the virus.

Health officials said the vaccine is very safe and highly effective.

According to the CDC, two doses of the measles vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles if you’re exposed to the virus. One dose of the vaccine is believed to be about 93% effective. You are considered fully protected about two to three weeks after getting the vaccine.

If you are unvaccinated and exposed to the virus, health officials say getting the measles vaccine within 72 hours of exposure can help reduce your risk of developing measles.

Some people with weakened immune systems may not be able to get the vaccine.

People who have been vaccinated in Michigan can check the immunization portal to see if their records are available.

To get your record, you must be 18 years of age or older and have or create a MiLogin account. You will have to upload an image of either your US passport, driver’s license, or state ID.

The Real ID deadline in Michigan is just over a month away; here's what you need to know

If your current state ID doesn't look like one of the two above, you have a tough time getting through TSA at the Detroit Metro Airport.

A safe flight usually starts at TSA, and beginning on May 7, TSA is upping it's safety measures by enforcing the Real ID requirements. But what does that mean?

“Every traveler, 18 years of age and older, must have a real ID state issued driver’s license, the state issued photo identification card, or another acceptable form that is accepted by TSA," said TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers.

Dankers says if your State ID doesn't look like the two examples above — notice the star in the upper right corner — you don't have a real ID.

“They can expect to have delays at the security check point and the length of the delay will be determined by the number of people around them who also do not have a compliant form of ID," Dankers said.

So, what would that delay look like?

“Yeah so that question is really still up in the air of what the enforcement will look like," Dankers said. "I do want people to understand they will be able to travel. There will be a phased enforcement approach and what that exactly looks like, we’re still determining that.”

Dankers says there are other forms of acceptable 'Real IDs'. There's a list on the TSA website, including a U.S. passport or enhanced driver's license.

Michigan resident Beverly Vines says that, although it's not required, she got the enhanced license years ago, because it counts as a Real ID and she can cross the U.S. border with it.

“It was very easy to get, you had to pay a little extra for it, but it was very easy to get," Vines said.

Celeste Humitz says she went with the enhanced license too.

“I think it makes us all safer, actually," Celeste said.

Dankers says safer is the goal, and she recommends getting Real ID compliant as soon as possible.

“The deadline is May 7th but you can do it after that as long as you are doing it before you are catching a flight, right?” I asked her.

“That’s a great point," Dankers said. "We know that not every American is going to be flying on May 7th and so, look at your travel plans, look at when you think you may be traveling if you don’t have those plans already.”

Don’t waste time, though. Tables book quickly.

Several upscale chains with locations in metro Detroit have announced Easter brunch hours as well, including familiar names like Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, and Ruth’s Chris Steak House are open on Easter. It’s a good idea to call ahead for reservations.

Several casual restaurants are open for Easter as well, including Applebee’s, The Cheesecake Factory, Chili’s, Cracker Barrel, Panera Bread, Olive Garden, Perkins, and Texas Roadhouse.

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America visited Detroit from Saturday, April 5, through Sunday, April 7, 2025 for a pastoral visit and to participate in the Detroit Greek Independence Day Parade.

The Archbishop was welcomed at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport by His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit. On Sunday, the Divine Liturgy and Doxology for March 25th Greek Independence Day was held at Annunciation Cathedral in Detroit, with the Presidential Guard of the Hellenic Republic in attendance. His Eminence presided over the Doxology and Metropolitan Maximos of Ioanna presided over the Divine Liturgy. Also serving were g Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit, Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzos, Dean of the Cathedral Fr. George Manias, Fr. Christopher Abell, Archdeacon Dionysios Papiris, and Deacon Steven Sarigianis.

In his remarks following the Doxology, the Archbishop thanked Metropolitan Maximos for his presence and for gifting the relics of St. George to the Cathedral:

“We are here at the Annunciation Cathedral in Greektown, Detroit, a historic location and legacy of the pioneers who came to this quintessentially American City, to begin a new life in the New World. Metropolitan Maximos is gracing the Cathedral today with Holy Relics of Saint George the New Martyr of Ioannina. This courageous and stalwart Solider of Christ braved torture and death, but never – not even of a moment – hesitated in his confession. His last words were: ‘I am a Christian and I shall die a Christian, I bow before my Christ and my Lady Theotokos.’ His confession, echoing through the centuries, will strengthen you when you feel faint in your faith, when you waver in your minds, and when your soul is troubled. We thank His Eminence for bringing these Precious Relics here to Detroit, where they will be enshrined within the Cathedral, and all Orthodox Christians may have the honor to venerate them and to receive the grace of Saint George the New Martyr.”

In the afternoon, Their Eminences participated in the colorful and exuberant Greek Independence Day Parade in Greektown with the Presidential Guard of the Hellenic Republic, the Evzones, the Consul of Greece in Chicago Georgia Tasilopoulou, the Mayor of the City of Detroit Mike Duggan, and Deputy Mayor Melia Howard. Also participating were thirty parishes, societies and Hellenes who marched with pride to show their love of Greece and their patriotic pride and their honor of our roots.
