DENTON, Texas — Every day, dozens of dogs at the City of Denton Animal Shelter wait for a new home. On Tuesday, one of them finally got his second chance — thanks to a familiar face.

Floyd, a 70-pound dog, was adopted by Ian Burke, a Denton mail carrier who had known the dog for years.

"I'm taking this guy home with me," Burke said after finalizing the adoption. "I don’t take it lightly, [this isn't] some random dog I’m adopting."

Their connection goes back three years. Burke met Floyd while delivering mail to his then-owner, an elderly wheelchair-bound Vietnam veteran, he said.

"This is a dog that was loved and cherished by a former customer of mine," Burke said, remembering the first time he met Floyd delivering mail. "He got out the door and he charged at me, right like a little puppy.”

Burke told WFAA he enjoyed stopping by their house each week.

“[Floyd's owner] checked his mail, which I liked,” Burke said with a smile, remembering the man fondly.

But about a year and a half ago, Burke's route changed, and he no longer saw Floyd or his owner. Then, last Saturday, the mail carrier who took over Burke’s route told him the man had passed away, and that Floyd was now at the city shelter.

Burke didn’t hesitate.

“I went down to the shelter at about 10 a.m. when they opened. I got there at 9:50 a.m. to make sure I was first in line,” he said.

He was.

And he left the shelter with Floyd.

"I kind of feel responsible to take care of him,” Burke said. “I think [his former owner] would be pleased to know his former mailman is taking good care of his dog."

Burke hopes Floyd’s story inspires others to consider adopting.

“Probably one of the best things the postal service inadvertently issued me,” he said with a smile.

“Cancer reduction has been a very big push in the fire service. This is one more step we're taking to protect our employees,” Denton’s fire chief said.

DENTON, Texas — The shiny red fire engine sitting inside Station 1 looks like any other, but the inside of this one is very different.

“This is the going to be the first electric fire truck in the state of Texas,” said Denton Fire Department Chief Kenneth Hedges. “It actually has two complete independent parallel systems. It is all-electric or the operator has the option to choose a diesel combustion engine as a back-up.”

It’s called a Volterra and sports a 246-kWh battery.

Pierce Manufacturing built it in Appleton, Wis. This engine emits zero emissions while driving in EV mode and pumping water at the scene of fires. But it does have a back-up diesel engine for redundancy.

Hedges said his department is about to find out how long the battery lasts on each charge but added that it only takes 90 minutes to go from empty to 100%.

But what happens if the engine’s battery runs out of charge during a major emergency?

“At no point will this ever run out of charge,” he added. “The benefit of this unit is the fact that if one component was to break on either side, the electric or diesel side, the operator can actually convert and switch to other and continue using the vehicle and keeping it in service.”

The city paid $1.8 million for the electric truck, which is about $600,000 more than a diesel-powered one. Denton’s sustainability fund helped make up the difference in cost.

“The primary reason behind this was the removal of diesel exhaust," Chief Hedges explained. "I think everybody understands diesel exhaust is classified as this carcinogen. So, every day our members are being exposed to carcinogens on their job. Cancer reduction has been a very big push in the fire service. This is just one more step we're taking to protect our employees.”

“And not only that, it is ultimately a quieter experience for them,” said Scott Beckwith, an account executive with Siddons-Martin Emergency Group. “These apparatuses are very loud with the diesel engines. When they show up on the street to take care of somebody that may be calling for medical assistance or even a car accident… the engines are silent. That allows for [first responders] to be more efficient with their time, allows for less stress from the noise that's constantly going and allows them to work for the citizen in a quieter environment as well.”

Still, change is not always well received in the fire service, especially one as novel as this. But Chief Hedges included his staff early in this process.

“I think we're seeing the excitement that is something new and they're going to get to be the first ones to try this, not just in the Denton Fire Department, but statewide,” Hedges said. “So, from the crews’ response, I believe there's a level of excitement.”

DFW Airport just deployed a fleet of large electric Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles, and Dallas Fire-Rescue is getting its first Volterra fire engine in July, Beckwith added.

Nationwide, Madison, Wis., Portland, Ore. and Gilbert, Ariz. already have the Volterra technology responding to emergencies.

A pastor who previously served several prominent Baptist churches in Texas, Georgia and Virginia is being held in the Denton County, Texas, jail on a $500,000 bond while facing charges of possession of child pornography.

Denton County public records show Jim Mustain was booked May 14 on one count of possessing more than 50 pieces of child pornography and four counts of possession or promotion of lewd visual materials depicting a child. The arresting division was the Lewisville, Texas, Police Department.

Mustain was not currently on a church staff but previously served on the ministerial staff at Preston Trail Community Church in Frisco, Texas; Valley Ranch Baptist Church in Coppell, Texas; New Life Bible Church in Oklahoma City; Dunwoody Baptist Church in Atlanta; and Shenandoah Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va.

His most recent post was at Preston Trail, where he worked as community pastor. Preston Trail is a nondenominational church with Texas Baptist roots. Mustain served there from 2019 through 2023.

Church leaders issued a statement saying after learning of the impending charges April 24, they hired a third-party law firm to investigate and found no illegal or improper activity related to his church employment.

There’s “no indication that any children connected to Preston Trail were involved or harmed,” the statement said. “Mustain’s role during his time on staff did not include direct responsibilities related to children’s or student ministries.”

Mustain also volunteered with student groups for Durham Middle School and Creekside Elementary School in Lewisville Independent School District as recently as the last school year. Lewisville ISD officials said in a letter to parents there’s no indication any of those students were affected by his alleged crimes but asked parents to come forward if they have relevant information.

He served as pastor for community and life transformation at Valley Ranch Baptist Church, a Cooperative Baptist Fellowship congregation, from 2005 to 2014. After leaving there, he founded his own ministry group called Loving Community, which he described as “being good neighbors by connecting people into relationships and serving the needs of the community.”

Loving Community is a partner organization with Mentor America to provide services to school children and senior adults. In 2016, his organization was named Nonprofit of the Year in the Lewisville, Flower Mound and Highland Village communities. Mustain also served on the several other nonprofits and was a frequent officiant at weddings in the community.

From 1999 to 2005, Mustain served as associate pastor of New Life Bible Church in Oklahoma City. From 1993 to 1999, he served as executive pastor at Dunwoody Baptist Church in Atlanta, a congregation that has been affiliated with both CBF and the Southern Baptist Convention. Prior to that, he served as senior associate pastor at Shenandoah Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va., an independent Baptist church.

No further information about the charges against Mustain are publicly available yet.

Nix will compete to win it all in the American Idol finale on Sunday on WFAA.

DENTON, Texas — A wave of hometown pride swept through Denton Square on Wednesday as fans gathered to support local singer Breanna Nix, who has made it into the top three of American Idol and will compete in Sunday’s finale.

Hundreds of residents filled the sidewalks, many holding handmade signs and wearing custom shirts to cheer on Nix, who first gained national attention with a heartfelt audition that resonated with viewers across the country.

“We’ve just been watching for years and years and years,” said Linda Teague, one of many longtime Idol fans at the event.

For 6-year-old Millie, the excitement was especially personal.

“Breana used to be at my school,” she said.

Throughout a parade in her honor, the crowd, filled with children and adults alike, shared what Nix’s journey has meant to them. Myla, 7, recalled her reaction when Nix appeared.

“I was like whistling and telling her, ‘Let’s go, Breana!’” she said.

Nix, who has become a role model for many young girls in the community, is known not just for her voice but her style.

“She always has some sparkles on her clothes,” Millie giggled.

Andrea Valadez, a local mom, said Nix’s story felt deeply personal.

“I resonated with Breana just as a mom,” she said.

During her audition, Nix told Idol judge Carrie Underwood she was "just" a stay-at-home mom. Underwood responded, "Never say you're 'just' a stay-at-home mom...you have the most important job," which sparked a wave of support from mothers nationwide.

“Carrie’s response kind of resonated,” Valadez told WFAA. “You’re not just a mom, you’re everything.”

Nix ended the evening with a performance for her neighbors, turning the square into a celebration of community.

The next time Nix takes the stage, it’ll be back in Hollywood where she’ll compete for the American Idol title. But for many in Denton, she’s already a winner.

“She inspired me,” said Harper, another young fan in the crowd.
