CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 9-2, in Southland Conference action Saturday at Chapman Field, claiming its fifth conference series of the season.

Southeastern (28-7, 13-4 SLC) scored a run in the first and tacked on five more in the third, jumping out to an insurmountable lead early over the Islanders (13-23, 5-12 SLC).

TJ Salvaggio lined a two-out triple into the right-center field gap in the first. He later scored on a wild pitch.

In the third, Giovanni Licciardi and Ryan Brome picked up back-to-back singles to open the inning. Salvaggio followed with an RBI double to nearly the same spot in right-center as his triple. Brome scored on Conner O'Neal's groundout to first. Mo Little plated Salvaggio with an RBI single and Dane Watts cleaned up the bases with his fourth home run of the season.

SLU added three more runs in the fifth for good measure. Little reached on an error by the Islander shortstop leading off the frame. Back-to-back singles by Watts and Bailyn Sorensen (RBI) brought Little around to score. Parker Coley delivered a one-out, RBI single to center, bringing home Watts, and Brome plated Sorensen with a two-out, RBI single.

A&M-Corpus Christi picked a pair of runs in the ninth.

Luke Lirette (3-1) earned the win, tossing five shutout innings. The junior from Houma, Louisiana scattered three hits and four walks, striking out three. Islander starting pitcher David Dean (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing six runs – all earned – in 2.1 innings pitched.

The Lions pounded out 15 hits, marking the third straight and fourth time in five games they have recorded double-digit hits.

Salvaggio (3-for-4), Watts (3-for-5), Brome (2-for-4), Coley (2-for-5) and Sorensen (2-for-5) all contributed multiple hits to the effort.

Wig Out Fundraiser

K Space Contemporary will host its signature fundraiser, WigOut: Surreal Sugar High, on Saturday, April 12, from 8 p.m. to midnight at its galleries located at 623 N. Chaparral St.

This whimsical event promises a candy-coated fantasy world with oversized lollipops, floating cotton candy clouds, and a vibrant atmosphere fueled by music from Ed Ocañas and Rave. Guests can expect inventive costumes, mesmerizing light displays, and unique photo opportunities inspired by the surrealist artwork of Miró, Dalí, and Magritte.

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team dropped a Southland Conference (SLC) and South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, match Saturday, 6-1, to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (AMCC) Islanders at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

With the victory, the Islanders (23-2, 8-1 SLC) clinched the South Texas Showdown trophy for the 2024-25 athletic year. AMCC leads UTRGV, 31-22, with three events worth seven points still to be played.

UTRGV (9-7, 6-3 SLC) started strong by taking the doubles point in a hard-fought session. The Islanders won the first match on Court 1, then the Vaqueros came storming back.

The No. 2 duo of sophomore Rhea Makesar and freshman Mariia Bakhtina picked up its fifth win in a row and sixth in the last seven matches (one unfinished). They jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Islanders made a late comeback attempt, winning three consecutive games, then the Vaqueros closed strong for the 6-4 win.

On Court 3, sophomores Hitakamya Narwal and Madeleine Joffe secured the 1-0 lead with a 6-3 win. The doubles teams swapped games to a 2-2 tie, then the Vaqueros found a rhythm to get the victory.

The Islanders rallied in singles, winning on all six courts to get the team victory. Junior Yaiza Vazquez battled in an extremely competitive match in the third flight, but Yana Mykytyn came back from dropping the first set to defeat Vazquez, 6-7 (4:7), 6-1, 1-0 (11:9).

UTRGV will be back in action at the SLC Tennis Championships at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex. Depending on seeding, the Vaqueros will either open their tournament campaign on April 22 or April 23.

SLU Downs Islanders in Series Opener

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team took down Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 11-3, Friday in the opening game of a Southland Conference series at Chapman Field.

Southeastern (27-7, 12-4 SLC) jumped out in front early on back-to-back home runs from Ryan Brome and TJ Salvaggio, but the Islanders (13-22, 5-11 SLC) scratched across a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to tie it up.

Lion starting pitcher Brennan Stuprich (7-2) and A&M-Corpus Christi starter Zach Garcia (3-4) held the bats in check over the next three innings. Beginning with the final out of the first, Stuprich retired 13 consecutive batters until he hit the first batter he faced in the sixth with a pitch.

By that time, SLU had given Stuprich the lead once again. Sending eight batters to the plate in the fifth, Southeastern took advantage of a pair of Islander errors on its way to a three-run inning.

Parker Coley led off the inning with a single up the middle. He was erased on a fielder’s choice as Giovanni Licciardi reached base. Brome doubled down the right-field line. Licciardi scored when the throw to second got away. Salvaggio reached on an error by the A&M-Corpus Christi third baseman. Conner O’Neal drove in Brome with a double down the right-field line and Salvaggio scored on Mo Little’s RBI groundout.

Leading 5-2, the Lions sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth on their way to three more runs.

Jude Hall ripped a leadoff double, advancing to third on a wild pitch that just happened to also be ball four to Coley. Licciardi dropped down a sacrifice bunt, reaching base safely when the Islanders threw home to prevent Hall from scoring. Brome then ripped an RBI single to center, chasing Garcia from the game. O’Neal added an RBI single and Little tacked on a sac fly before the inning ended.

A&M-Corpus Christi scored an unearned run in the sixth when the Lions threw the ball away attempting to turn a double play. Stuprich battled back to get a double play from the next batter and a pop-up two batters later to end the inning.

Luke Barbier relieved Stuprich in the eighth, recording the final four outs to finish out the game.

Delivering some insurance in the ninth, Coley, Licciardi and Brome delivered consecutive run-scoring hits.

Stuprich earned the win, allowing three runs – two earned – in 7.2 innings pitched. He surrendered four hits and one walk, striking out seven batters. Garcia suffered the loss, allowing eight runs – seven earned – in 5.0 innings of work.

With the 23rd victory of his career, Stuprich is now tied with Tate Scioneaux (2013-15) for fifth in program history. His career strikeout total now stands at 256, bypassing Steve Trosclair (1998-2002) into a fourth-place tie with Jeff Williams (1992-96). The redshirt senior from Kenner, Louisiana also made the 48th start of his career, tying Williams and former teammate Will Kinzeler (2021-24) for second in program history.

Brome (4-for-6), Coley (3-for-4), Hall (2-for-4) and O’Neal (2-for-5) enjoyed multi-hit performances as the Lions collectively pounded out 14 hits in the series-opening win.

After a national search, Toyelle Wilson was announced as the fifth head coach in the history of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women’s basketball team Thursday by vice president of intercollegiate athletics Adrian Rodriguez.

Wilson joins the Islanders following an illustrious coaching career spanning nearly two decades, with impactful roles as both a head coach and assistant coach at the highest levels of collegiate basketball. She brings to the Island 110 career wins and five postseason appearances out of the seven seasons she’s been a head coach. Including her time as an assistant coach, Wilson has made 13 NCAA Tournaments with two runs to the Sweet 16, four to the Elite Eight, and the National Championship Title in 2019.

“I am absolutely honored to be named the next head coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi,” said Wilson. “This position is an incredible opportunity, and I am grateful to lead such a remarkable program. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to President Miller, Athletics Director Adrian Rodriquez, Eric [Schultz], and Cassi [Rozanski] for trusting in my vision for the future of this program. They did a tremendous amount of work in a short period of time to get me to this point. I am a person of faith, fit, and feel and immediately when I started talking with them it checked every box in what I was looking for in my next coaching opportunity.

“I also want to acknowledge and thank Coach Royce Chadwick for his years of leadership and dedication to Islanders Women’s Basketball. Most recently, Wilson spent the last four seasons serving as the head coach at Southern Methodist University (SMU), where she orchestrated a remarkable turnaround for the Mustangs, finishing tied for fourth as the program’s highest finish in the American Athletic Conference her first year. Under Wilson, the Mustangs also made the postseason in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2014 and 2015 after SMU finished the 2022-23 season with its second consecutive WNIT appearance. That same year, SMU finished 13-2 in Moody Coliseum, including a 10-0 start at home to set the program’s new best start to open a season and best home winning streak.

Prior to SMU, Wilson was a key figure on staff at the University of Michigan from 2019-21, helping the Wolverines reach back-to-back NCAA Tournaments including a historic Sweet 16 appearance in 2021, the first in program history. At Michigan, she was instrumental in recruiting and developing elite talent, including All-Americans and WNBA draft picks, while elevating the program to national prominence.

From 2013-19, Wilson served as an assistant coach at Baylor University under Hall of Fame Coach Kim Mulkey. During her time with the Lady Bears, the program captured six Big 12 regular season titles and the 2019 NCAA National Championship. Wilson played a central role in Baylor’s success, contributing to four Elite Eight appearances and one Sweet 16 run. Her reputation for elite defensive schemes, dynamic recruiting, and strong player relationships helped produce 40 All-Big 12 honorees, three Big 12 Players of the Year, three Defensive Players of the Year, and 10 WNBA draft picks.

Wilson’s head coaching journey began at Prairie View A&M from 2010-13, where she made history by leading the Lady Panthers to three consecutive SWAC Tournament Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances, a first in program history. She earned SWAC Coach of the Year honors twice and helped elevate Prairie View’s national profile through both athletic and academic excellence. Prior to accepting the head coach position, Wilson was the Panthers’ top assistant for four years and spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Robert Morris University.

Wilson was additionally one of 30 coaches across the nation who participated in the Center for Coaching Excellence (CCE) by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The CCE is an elite program for select basketball coaches and is designed to provide college women’s basketball coaches with the professional skills and personal ethics training necessary to be exceptional leaders. Wilson is also a member of the WBCA.

A native of Voorhees, New Jersey, Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Manhattan College in 2003 and was a four-year letterwinner for the women’s basketball team. She was a team captain and earned Defensive Player of the Year honors while leading the Jaspers to an NCAA Tournament berth and a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship in 2003.

Wilson assumes her role immediately and will be formally introduced to the community at a formal press conference to be held on Tuesday, April 15^th at 2 p.m. CT in the Dugan Wellness Center on the campus of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
