CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels dazzled crowds Saturday at the Wings Over South Texas Air Show, marking the event’s highly anticipated return to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi for the first time since 2019.

The free public show, held on the airfield, drew hundreds of spectators eager to witness the precision flying of the renowned demonstration squadron. The Blue Angels’ performance capped off a full day of aerial displays, including demonstrations by the F/A-18F Super Hornet, F-35C Lightning II, and F-22 Raptor.

Among the attendees was Ellen McDonough, a devoted fan who traveled to Corpus Christi specifically for the show. "I grew up going to the air shows at Hanscom Air Force in Massachusetts and seeing the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds, and my dad was a huge fan," McDonough said. "Every time I see them, I'm a 5-year-old girl again."

For McDonough and countless others, the air show was a chance to relive childhood excitement and celebrate military aviation. "I'm a fan," she said simply.

The show also featured aerobatic performances, military demonstrations, and a U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team flag jump during the national anthem.

The Blue Angels’ appearance served as the grand finale, showcasing the teamwork and skill of the Navy’s flight demonstration squadron. The team’s signature C-130J "Fat Albert" also performed earlier in the day.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx — The United States Navy‘s Blue Angels squadron landed at Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi Thursday morning.

The squadron is preparing for the Wings Over South Texas Airshow, which NAS-CC will host on Saturday, May 10. NAS-Corpus Christi has not hosted an airshow since 2019, although Buc Days hosted it when the Blue Angels were here in Corpus Christi in 2021 and 2023.

Many Blue Angel pilots are returning to the base where they first trained to fly as student pilots.

Adam Bryan, Commanding Officer and Flight Leader of the United States Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron Blue Angels, says NAS-CC set the foundation for his success today.

"This is a very special place for myself as well as all the other teammates here. You know, half the pilots in the Navy start flight school here. Fly their first naval aircraft, so this area of South Texas kind of made me the aviator I am, as well as the rest of the aviators here," said Commanding Officer Adam Bryan.

Many of the Blue Angels team members are from other parts of Texas, like Wes Perkins.

Perkins says he's been in the Navy for 12 years and a Blue Angel for 2 years. Many of the naval aviation students, specifically those in primary and advanced flight training, are down here, both in Corpus Christi and Kingsville.

"So this is more or less our target audience for our replacements in the future. So it's a big deal for us to bring our jets down here. Showcase the teamwork and professionalism of the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and hopefully inspire them to fulfill their dreams within Naval Aviation. If nothing else, become part of the Blue Angels team in the future," said Perkins.

Perkins says his family is traveling down to Corpus Christi to watch the air show.

"I would say excitement out of performing for the people that you know and for the state that you're a part of, which makes it a little more special in my opinion. Not that any other show isn't special, this one just means a lot more to me," added Perkins.

The Wings Over South Texas Air Show is expected to draw about 60,000 spectators, including many potential future Blue Angels aviators.

Here's how Texas funding plans could impact budgets, salaries at Corpus Christi ISD

Corpus Christi Caller Times...

Corpus Christi Caller Times

(This story was updated because an earlier version included an inaccuracy.)

Correction: The Corpus Christi Independent School District has been financially impacted by disputes between the Nueces County Appraisal District and taxpayers, including Valero, related to property tax assessments. A previous version of this story misstated whether the tax disputes were resolved.

The Texas Legislature is considering several school funding proposals. If they pass, public schools would have access to more state funding and teachers would receive pay raises.

But school districts won’t know what funding they might receive until a bill passes and is signed into law. Though the session is ongoing, districts like Corpus Christi Independent School District are planning the 2025-26 budget now.

The Corpus Christi ISD Board of Trustees heard several potential budget scenarios from staff on May 12 during a board workshop.

Here’s how potential school funding legislation could impact Corpus Christi ISD:

What if there’s no new state funding?

Corpus Christi ISD has adopted deficit budgets since 2022-23, spending more than it is able to collect from taxes and state and federal funding sources.

"We cannot sustain that for much longer," CCISD Chief Financial Officer Roxanne Douglas said. "If legislation doesn't provide us any more money, we'll really have to figure out where can we really make some cuts."

This year’s adopted budget included a $20 million deficit.

Actual spending for the year has been higher as budget amendments have been approved to cover unexpected costs.

However, during the year, numerous budgeted staff positions were never filled, amounting to $10 million in unspent salary dollars.

Additionally, the district has been financially impacted by disputes between the Nueces County Appraisal District and taxpayers, including Valero, related to property tax assessments.

The district received $10.4 million from the state related to one year's disputed tax assessments. The district is still waiting for additional dollars from the state related to other years of resolved tax disputes.

The district has struggled to attract and retain teachers. At the end of March, three-quarters through the fiscal year, Corpus Christi ISD had 382 unfilled positions across the district, including more than 80 teachers.

Including retirees and teachers who are leaving at the end of this year, the district will need to fill 215 teacher positions by August to be fully staffed for 2025-26.

This year, Corpus Christi ISD offered teachers small raises. Corpus Christi ISD teacher pay is "in line" with other local school districts, except for Gregory-Portland ISD, which has typically outpaced the Coastal Bend region, said Karen Griffith, Corpus Christi ISD deputy superintendent for business support service.

Repeating the same raise plan approved for the current school year, which ranged from 1% to 3% depending on years of experience, would cost the district $4.3 million.

If there are no changes to state funding and the district pursues the $4.3 million raise plan, the deficit could be as high as about $39.4 million. That doesn’t account for additional revenues the district might receive.

The district is expecting an estimated additional $33.4 million from the state as the result of the resolved tax disputes, which could reduce the 2025-26 deficit to about $6 million.

But there is no guarantee that the tax dispute revenues will come during the 2025-26 fiscal year.

What if Texas House Bill 2 passes?

Several plans to increase school funding and teacher pay are currently being considered by the Texas Legislature.

But proposals were introduced during the last legislative session two years ago as well. State lawmakers failed to increase the basic allotment, the basis of the Texas public school funding formula, and school leaders had to look internally at already-stretched budgets for any raises.

If House Bill 2 is adopted, the state would invest $8 billion in education, increasing schools’ base funding by $395 per child, which is counted through average daily attendance.

In this scenario, Corpus Christi ISD would offer raises ranging from 2% to 4% of the midpoint of their salary range depending on years of experience for teachers, nurses, counselors and librarians.

A teacher with between one and four years of experience would see a $1,227 bump. A teacher with more than 10 years of experience would see a $2,762 increase.

For all other non-administrators, pay would rise between 1% and 3% depending on years of experience.

If HB 2 passes in its current form and the district approves this pay model, Corpus Christi ISD could still have an about $15.7 million deficit. However, if the district receives the settlement from the tax dispute next year, the district would actually have an about $17.7 million surplus in 2025-26.

But these tax dispute revenues would be only a one-time payment, leaving potential financial concerns in future years.

HB 2 was passed by the Texas House of Representatives in April but still needs approval from the Texas Senate.

The Texas Senate has its own plan, Senate Bill 26.

What if Texas Senate Bill 26 passes?

Under SB 26, for school districts with more than 5,000 students, teachers would see a $2,500 raise if they have three to five years of experience and a $5,500 raise if they have more than five years of experience. Teachers in smaller districts would receive more.

In this scenario, Corpus Christi ISD would respond by spending an additional $11.6 million on teacher and staff raises.

Teachers, counselors, nurses and librarians would receive a 4% midpoint raise, amounting to $2,627, if they have one to four years of experience. They would receive a 9% midpoint raise, or $5,833, if they have more than four years of experience.

All other staff members would receive a 1% to 3% raise depending on consecutive years at Corpus Christi ISD.

If this occurs, the district’s 2025-26 deficit could be about $20.2 million. If the funding from the resolved tax dispute is received, the district would instead have close to a $13.2 million surplus.

When will plans be finalized?

The Texas Legislature’s 89th regular session lasts until June 2. Gov. Greg Abbott could also choose to call a special session at a later date.

Corpus Christi ISD will need to adopt a budget in June, though the tax rate will not be approved until August.

A budget workshop is scheduled for May 19.

The district’s regularly scheduled June board meeting is planned for June 9. At this time, the school board could choose to adopt a budget.

A routine beach survey took a surprising turn last week when marine biologist Jace Tunnell of the Harte Research Institute discovered a 35-foot sailboat stranded on the shores of Corpus Christi, its sails still open and surrounded by thick piles of sargassum.

The vessel, tagged out of Arizona, appeared to have been abandoned—yet was still stocked with personal items, including a grill and cooler. About a quarter mile down the beach, Tunnell found the boat's dinghy, raising serious concerns about the passengers' safety.

"I did check real quick and yelled inside," Tunnell said in a video, part of his Beachombing series on YouTube. "I didn't hear anybody. But man, look at this—they got the sails open and a little bit further down the way... their dinghy was over there, so that got me kind of worried. Like okay, well maybe they washed up over here and then their boat's over here in some kind of emergency situation."

Tunnell, who often films his coastal findings for educational outreach, captured the eerie scene in real time for viewers. "It's rough conditions out here today," he said on camera. "Jeez, all their stuff is still here. And it looks like their running lights are still on."

After ensuring there was no one on board, Tunnell contacted the appropriate authorities to report the vessels. Fortunately, the boat's owners had already alerted marine towing service Sea Tow and were arranging for removal.

"This boat actually washed up a couple of days ago," Tunnell confirmed. "Maybe I should have called before I got in there, but I just wanted to make sure that everybody was safe and there was nobody stuck in there."

Though the scene turned out to be less dire than it initially appeared, Tunnell emphasized the unpredictability of the Texas coast. "You never know what you're going to find at the beach," he said. "I'm just glad everybody's safe and they're going to get their boat back."
