COLUMBIA — When summertime temperatures in the city soar to 100 degrees, the Saluda Riverwalk is one of the best places to cool off.
The trail runs along the Saluda River’s southern portion, which has wooded areas lining the banks. Rich tree canopies provide shade to visitors, even in the middle of the day.
“You're walking right along a cold stream,” said Mike Dawson, CEO of The River Alliance, a nonprofit that has spearheaded the construction of riverside trails in the Columbia area. “And some people just sit out there and enjoy the cool breeze.”
Columbia has several “riverwalks,” most of which are within a couple of miles of the city center (think the Statehouse). They offer residents and visitors a place to reconnect with nature while exercising, relaxing or spending time with loved ones. The information below incorporates details from The River Alliance, the All Trails hiking guide and the local tourism authority.
Dawson said the trails are accessible not just to walkers and runners but also parents with baby strollers, bicyclists and people in wheelchairs since they were designed in accordance with federal standards in the Americans with Disabilities Act. The central paths are also lit and open to dogs on a leash.
“Everybody that we see go out there, goes away happier,” Dawson said. “I have nobody complaining about a day on the river.”
Cayce Riverwalk
Trail length: 7 miles, paved and boardwalk
Features: Bird watching, fishing, picnic tables and public art
Parking: 201 Naples Ave., Cayce; 321 Lyles St., Cayce and 157 Old State Road, Cayce
The trail runs alongside the Congaree River, formed by the merger of the Broad and Saluda rivers in the center of Columbia. The Cayce Riverwalk, located on the river’s western side, also winds through the woods.

Their biscuits have been rising in South Carolina for a few years now, but one of their local restaurants is no more.
One of the three Biscuitville locations in the Columbia area has shuttered after operating for a little more than a year at 7924 Garners Ferry Road.
Opened in March 2024, it was the second location of the Southern breakfast staple, known for its array of biscuit sandwiches, to open in the area. The Garners Ferry restaurant opened a month after the first Columbia outpost arrived at 2715 Clemson Road. The other local Biscuitville, at 10605 Broad River Road in Irmo, opened earlier this year.
The Garners Ferry location is listed as closed by both Google and the Biscuitville website.
In a statement provided to The State, Biscuitville said it “is committed to continuing to grow our company in a careful and sustainable way. In the coming months, we will be announcing exciting new developments related to our brand, our products and our commitment to serving our communities and our employees. Part of our process for planning for the future always includes conducting a current analysis of every store’s operations and performance.”
“We are extremely pleased with how our stores are performing, serving guests and contributing to the overall success of the company,” the statement continued. “However, for a number of reasons related to the future growth of the company, the decision was made to close our 7924 Garners Ferry Rd., Columbia, SC, location at 2 p.m. on June 29, 2025.”
Biscuitville has been a Southern favorite for nearly six decades. Rooted in North Carolina and Virginia, it only ventured into South Carolina in the past few years. There are other Palmetto State locations in Indian Land, Hartsville, Florence, Greer and Duncan.
Another SC location is set to open later this month in Anderson, according to the restaurant’s website, broadening its reach throughout the state.
The first Biscuitville opened in 1975 in Danville, Virginia, per the chain’s website. The company now has more than 70 locations across Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. In 2022, it opened a 78,000-square-foot distribution center in Burlington, North Carolina.
Appeals court resurrects former SC school board member's defamation lawsuit against Facebook critic

COLUMBIA — The S.C. Court of Appeals has partly revived a former Lexington-Richland Five school board member's 2022 defamation lawsuit against one of his online critics.
Ken Loveless, who sat on the Chapin- and Irmo-area board from 2018 to 2022, had alleged that parent Leslie Stiles defamed him in posts she made and approved in a Facebook group she administered that was often critical of the board.
His lawsuit was dismissed from Richland County's circuit court by former state Supreme Court Justice Jean Toal later in 2022. Toal ruled that Stiles was protected by the First Amendment.
A July 2 order from the appeals court partly overturned that dismissal.
The appeals court ruled that Toal was correct to dismiss Loveless' allegations over statements that other people made on Stiles' “Deep Dive into D5" page, finding that she wasn't liable for other users' posts under federal law. His initial complaint cited statements that referred to him as "Crooked Ken" and as an "unethical hypocrite and a liar."
But the appeals judges overturned Toal's dismissal regarding statements that Stiles herself was alleged to make. Their order ruled that Loveless had properly claimed that she had made some of the allegedly defamatory statements and done so with "actual malice," the legal standard for defamation against a public official.
The order did not rule on whether those allegations were correct, only that they were improperly dismissed and can continue to be tried in court.
Lawyers for both Loveless and Stiles declined to comment on the order.
A separate 2022 defamation lawsuit from Loveless against current school board member Kevin Scully is on-going. That case, also centered on Facebook posts, was filed before Scully was elected to the board in 2022.
Loveless lost his reelection campaign that year by just 14 votes, and he unsuccessfully ran for a seat on the board again in 2024.
A state Ethics Commission panel ruled in 2023 that he had violated state ethics law by failing to recuse himself from board discussions about the construction of a new elementary school being built by a contractor for which Loveless' own firm was a subcontractor on an unrelated project.
Several of the allegedly defamatory statements included in Loveless' defamation suit reference those ethics allegations.
Loveless has strenuously denied any wrongdoing, pointing out that he never took a vote related to the Piney Woods Elementary School project. He unsuccessfully appealed to an appellate ethics commission panel, arguing that its long-standing interpretation of the Ethics Act is incorrect, and he has signaled that he'll appeal its decision upholding the initial ruling to the state appeals court.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A former public official in Richland County is facing multiple charges after deputies said he led them on a pursuit and made threats to a woman.
Deputies said 55-year-old Anthony "Tony" Mizzell is facing charges of failure to stop for blue lights and siren, reckless driving, domestic violence 3rd degree, and threatening the life of a public official.
Deputies said around 8 p.m. on June 29, they saw a black vehicle driving approximately 80 miles an hour in a 45 mph zone near Bluff and Atlas Road. A deputy stopped the vehicle went it reached an intersection. They said Mizzell, the driver, told deputies that his daughter was having a medical episode and told them he would leave the scene. Moments later, deputies said he drove off.
They then began pursuing him where they said he ran several stop signs. They caught up to him after about a mile and a half and pulled him over again after he stopped at a home. They then got him to come out of the car and put him in handcuffs.
Deputies went inside the home and spoke to a woman who said Mizzell had threatened her and her boyfriend with text messages and phone calls. An incident report states the woman appeared scared feared for her life when she learned Mizzell was driving to Columbia from Orangeburg.
Deputies said they located two weapons, including a handgun and an AR style rifle, in the vehicle.
They then placed Mizzell in custody. However, deputies said both on the way to the jail and at the jail Mizell was combative and acted erratically, including making threats to a deputy. He also complained of abdominal pain, deputies said, and was taken by EMS to the hospital to be checked out. After several hours, he was released and brought back to the jail.
Mizzell has since been released on bond.
Mizzell served eight years on the Richland County Council, leaving office in 2006.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A former Richland County councilman was recently arrested after allegedly leading deputies on a chase and threatening a victim.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department said Anthony “Tony” Mizzell was arrested June 29 and faces charges including failure to stop for blue lights and siren, reckless driving, third-degree domestic violence and threatening the life of a public official.
Mizzell was a two-term Richland County councilman from 1998-2006 and served as the council chair during his tenure.
RCSD said a deputy first spotted Mizzell driving a black Cadillac speeding in the area of Bluff Road and Atlas Road. Mizzell was then pulled over for a traffic stop, where RCSD said he was noncompliant and fled the stop after saying that someone he knew “was having a medical episode.”
Mizzell then reportedly led RCSD deputies on a chase, disregarding stop signs and traffic lights before arriving at a home on Wembley Street.
The sheriff’s office said the homeowner there informed deputies that there was no medical emergency but that they did have text messages and audio of Mizzell threatening to harm them and others. They also appeared to be “visibly scared” of him, according to deputies.
Authorities also reportedly discovered two weapons inside Mizzell’s vehicle.
Deputies then arrested Mizzell, with RCSD saying he was “combative and behaved erratically, threatening the life of a deputy on scene and complaining of seizures.” Mizzell also reportedly continued acting out and refused to follow instructions before being taken to a hospital for abdominal pain. He was released several hours later and booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Mizzell has since been released on a nearly $10,640 bond. WIS is working to learn more about the conditions of his release.
