CLEVELAND, Ohio — If April showers bring May flowers, Northeast Ohio might be in for quite the botanical boom this year.

That’s because the region saw more rain than normal in the month of April, according to a climate summary for Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

In total, 4.72 inches of rain was recorded at the airport throughout the month, which was 0.97 inches more than usual.

That may not sound like much, but it’s a 25% jump over the norm. That’s enough to soak soil, swell streams and give May’s greenery a serious head start.

“In the case of April, you had four days that had a big chunk of that precipitation,” said Brian Mitchell with the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

Those four days were April 2 with 0.77 inches, April 3 with 0.73 inches, April 5 with 1.13 inches and April 25 with 1.17 inches.

Otherwise, there were 12 days during the month with at least a trace amount of rainfall, according to records.

Comparing to previous years

So, how does the 4.72 inches of precipitation that fell in April 2025 stack up against previous years?

In 2024, the airport recorded 4.28 inches of precipitation, which was about a half-inch more than normal.

When looking back 30 years for the Cleveland area, April 2025 was the sixth-rainiest on record. The rainiest April during that time occurred in 2011, when 6.89 inches fell over the course of the month.

In fact, 2011 saw the all-time most precipitation in April on record for the area.

In contrast, the lowest amount in April occurred in 1915, when just 0.65 inches fell throughout the month in downtown Cleveland.

Other notable rainy Aprils included 6.07 inches in 1998, 5.61 inches in 1996, 5.57 inches in 2005 and 4.96 inches in 2014, according to the records dating back to 1995.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A line of severe thunderstorms has begun to move through Northeast Ohio on Thursday afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a severe thunderstorm warning covering the region.

At 3:40 p.m., the storms were located along a line extending from Westlake to the Strongsville and Lodi areas, moving northeast at 55 mph.

Radar indicated that winds were gusting to 60 mph, which is strong enough to bring down trees and power lines.

The severe thunderstorm warning, which is in effect until 4:15 p.m., covers Cuyahoga, Medina, southwestern Lake, northern Summit and northeastern Lorain counties.

A group of storms ahead of the line prompted a severe thunderstorm warning earlier Thursday afternoon, shortly after 3 p.m. Radar showed wind gusts of 60 mph and quarter-sized hail. As a result of the hail, minor damage to vehicles was possible, the NWS said.

Overall, a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued across a large swath of the state, including Northeast Ohio. That watch is in effect until 7 p.m. and indicates that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in or near the watch area.

The line of thunderstorms is expected to move out of the region by 7 p.m., forecasters said.

Another wave of low pressure will move northeast toward the Great Lakes region on Friday, bringing with it another chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Those showers and storms are expected to develop Friday afternoon, generally along and east of the interstates 71 and 77 corridors, according to forecasters.

Columbus, OH (May 6, 2025) – An injury accident was reported Tuesday night on the westbound side of Interstate 270 just after the Cleveland Ave exit. The crash occurred around 9:47 p.m. and resulted in injuries to at least one individual, according to updates from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).

Cleveland, OH (May 5, 2025) – A woman sustained injuries Monday evening after her vehicle was rear-ended by a semi-truck on the northbound lanes of Route 176 merging onto I-71 North in Cleveland.
