CHANDLER, AZ (AZFamily) — A Chandler veteran became the Valley’s newest millionaire thanks to his wife suggesting going to the casino a day earlier than they usually do.

A man only identified as Michael H. won $1,033,590 on a Wheel of Fortune® slot machine at around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Gila River Resorts & Casinos – Santan Mountain, officials announced. They said he and his wife Betty go to the casino often.

They typically visit on Sundays, but this time Betty suggested they go a day early. “I’m glad I listened to my wife,” said Michael. “We didn’t plan on visiting the casino (Saturday), but we did and now we’re leaving big winners.”

The couple also had originally planned to go to Rocky Point for the weekend but their dog sitter canceled last minute.

Michael and Betty say they plan to use the money to buy a new home and spend more time visiting their grandchildren who live outside Arizona.

Michael is an Army veteran and a retired American Airlines employee who currently drives a shuttle bus for an independent living community. He often drives residents to Santan Mountain casino on Gilbert Road near Hunt Highway.

The casino says Michael’s jackpot was the fourth million-dollar jackpot award at one of Gila River’s four casinos. “We couldn’t be happier for Michael and Betty,” Michael West, general manager of Santan Mountain, said in a written statement. “Their story is a perfect example of the kind of connection we strive to create with every guest.”

CHANDLER, AZ — Developers tell ABC15 that a proposed affordable housing development in Chandler will be scrapped.

Dominium was planning to build hundreds of apartments for seniors and veterans who qualify for low-income housing.

While the plan had support from groups like the Valley Interfaith Project, it faced heavy pushback from neighbors and the city over the location near Arizona Avenue and Ocotillo Road.

Now, the developer plans to sell the land.

“That location was just not the right fit. It didn’t go along with the general plan. It was a risky location. It was a noisy location,” neighbor Derek Logan said.

Dominium Senior Vice President and Mountain West Development Leader Owen Metz released a statement:

“Dominium works tirelessly to improve Arizona’s ongoing housing crisis that is resulting in rents that are out of reach for our essential workforce and seniors on fixed incomes. The only way to solve the issue is to build new housing for all incomes. Arizona’s housing shortage is a challenge in each community in the Valley. It is unfortunate that nearly 300 seniors will not get to call Sonoran Landings in Chandler home and receive much needed housing security and financial relief as well as connections to vital services. We respect the role Democracy played in that process and look forward to continuing to provide quality affordable housing for Arizonans who need it most.”

For the Valley Interfaith Project, their advocacy for affordable housing continues, despite the Chandler project stalling.

“The conversation is not at an end,” Valley Interfaith leader Barbara Quijada said. “We are interested in what properties the city of Chandler owns around the city and what might be done with those.”

Kick off this musically themed month with the Chandler Jazz Festival, April 3-6, with performances from talented local and national artists. Downtown Chandler will host “sidewalk bands” who will play throughout downtown during all four days of the festival. The locations for sidewalk band performances are within close proximity to each other and adjacent to downtown shops and restaurants.

On Saturday, April 5, enjoy even more live jazz with performances into the evening hours at the Main Stage, located at Dr. A.J. Chandler Park: Stage Plaza, 178 E. Commonwealth Ave.

Chandler, AZ (May 8, 2025) – A devastating crash involving four vehicles on Loop 202 left an 8-year-old girl and another individual with serious injuries Thursday morning in Chandler. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), the incident occurred in the eastbound lanes of the Santan Freeway near Kyrene Rd.

Emergency responders, including local fire and rescue units, arrived quickly to manage the chaotic scene. Crews worked urgently to extricate a young girl and one adult from the wreckage. Both sustained severe injuries and required immediate transport to nearby medical facilities.

The young child was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. DPS confirmed that no other individuals suffered injuries in the collision, which brought traffic to a near halt during the busy morning commute.

Traffic in the area remains heavily congested. Only one lane on the freeway is currently open, and both the eastbound and westbound Kyrene Rd off-ramps have been closed as officials continue to manage the investigation and cleanup.

The cause of the crash is under active investigation. DPS officers and crash reconstruction specialists are working to determine what led to the multi-vehicle pileup. The scene remains restricted as evidence is collected.
