Burbank, CA (April 14, 2025) –The City of Burbank is thrilled to invite artists from across the country to participate in the Johnny Carson Park Shade Structure Public Artwork Project, a part of the City’s Art in Public Places (APP) program. This exciting project will transform Johnny Carson Park (Park) with a unique, artistic shade structure that will both enhance the Park's beauty and provide much-needed shade for its visitors. The Request for Qualifications (RFQu) is now open via PlanetBids and will remain available for 8 weeks.

This project is about creating a functional and beautiful piece that integrates both creativity and engineering. Artists will work as part of a design-build team, blending their artistic vision with technical expertise to develop a shade structure that enhances the Park's experience for all who visit.

The Johnny Carson Park Shade Structure is part of the City’s Art in Public Places Program, founded in 1992. Under City ordinance, new development projects exceeding $500,000 in construction costs are required to allocate 1% of the project’s total budget toward on-site public art. These funds, which come from non-taxpayer sources, help support the creation and maintenance of art in Burbank’s public spaces.

The City extends its appreciation to all artists who previously expressed interest. After thoughtful evaluation, the scope has been revised to broaden eligibility and improve the selection process. As a result, the RFQu is now open to artists nationwide.

Due to the project’s designation as a Public Works Project, a two-step procurement process has been introduced to ensure compliance with necessary regulations and oversight. Artists must apply as part of a design-build team, ensuring the seamless integration of artistic and structural elements for the shade structure. This collaborative approach enhances the feasibility and functionality of the project.

Johnny Carson Park is a 17-acre regional park located at 400 Bob Hope Drive in Burbank, California. The park features beautiful gardens, exercise equipment, walking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and a stage that currently lacks a shade structure. The City is seeking creative ideas for an artistic shade structure that will provide relief from the sun and enhance the beauty and functionality of this vibrant public space.

Please be advised of a construction project at East Providencia and South Sixth Street starting from the northwest corner of south Glenoaks Blvd and East Providencia Ave and finishing about 200 ft east of East Providencia Ave and South 6th Street intersection that will take place from April 14, 2025 to July 18, 2025 between the normal working hours of 8:30AM and 3:30PM, Monday through Friday, excluding Holidays and Weekends. WHERE: Construction will take place on the East side of E Providencia Ave and South side of S. 6th Street, starting from the NW corner of S Glenoaks Blvd and E Providencia Ave and finishing about 200 ft east of E Providencia Ave and S 6th Street intersection.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Sections of the sidewalk along E. Providencia Ave and S. 6th Street will be closed for construction. There will be pedestrian detours provided and flaggers to assist with pedestrian traffic. On-street parking and loading zones will be closed on the East side of E. Providencia Ave and sections of S. 6th Street. "No Parking Anytime" signs will be posted with the dates and times of the parking restrictions. During certain phases of construction, there will be a half road closure on E. Providencia and S. 6th Street; Detour will be provided to assist with vehicular traffic.

Burbank, CA (March 18, 2025) – On March 11, 2025, the Burbank City Council adopted an ordinance amending Chapter 4 (Residential Tenant Protections) of Title 5 (Police and Public Safety) of the Burbank Municipal Code. The ordinance adds an exemption from the increased relocation assistance payment obligation relating to an owner’s or owner’s relative’s move-in in accordance with California Civil Code section 1946.2(b)(2)(A) and strengthens tenant protections by adding anti-harassment measures that apply to all tenants in the City of Burbank.

This Ordinance amends the residential tenant protections ordinance that was adopted on July 30, 2024 in accordance with Assembly Bill 1482 and Senate Bill 567 to include an exemption relating to an owner’s or owner’s relative’s move-in in accordance with California Civil Code section 1946.2(b)(2)(A), from the obligation to pay increased relocation assistance of three months’ current rent and instead such owner shall pay relocation assistance in an amount equal to no less than one (1) month’s rent as required by California Civil Code section 1946.2(d). Furthermore, the Ordinance amendment imposes anti-harassment measures to protect tenants from harassment for any lawful exercise of their rights. Finally, the Ordinance amendment provides for tenant-initiated enforcement of the anti-retaliation and anti-harassment provisions in the approved Ordinance amendment in a civil court of law.
