There will be "intense congestion" on the Massachusetts Turnpike near Interstate 95 in the Newton/Weston area for two upcoming weekends, transportation officials announced Thursday, urging the public to plan other ways to get around.
The work, to accommodate replacing a bridge carrying the highway over the MBTA Commuter Rail tracks, is expected to cause major delays for both weekends.
All but one lane will be closed in both directions between exits 123 and 125 from starting at 9 p.m. Friday, May 30, through 5 a.m. the following Monday, June 2, and again from June 20-23, for the same time frame, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
"We know that the major delays that could be experienced through this area are inconvenient," said Jonathan Gulliver, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation's top highway official, at a news conference Thursday.
He added that drivers should expect "intense congestion on this area of the Turnpike for both of these weekends," with backups of up to two or three hours.
Commuter trains on the Worcester line will also be shut down during the work, according to the announcement, also from the MBTA and Massport. Amtrak service to Albany will also be affected — free shuttle buses will replace trains.
The bridge replacement is part of the larger, $230 million I-90/I-95 Interchange project, which involves rehabilitating eight bridges and replacing five of them.
Overnight closures are impacting drivers on Interstate 95 and the Massachusetts Turnpike.
Gulliver estimated that about 80,000 drivers typically use the affected stretch of highway over weekends, and that it's easy for traffic to back up on normal days.
The work involves demolishing the existing bridge, then bringing in pre-fabricated bridge units and installing them, all before the morning rush on Monday, he said. A dry run at the site went well last weekend.
"We've done a lot of work to make sure this goes right and we expect it to," Gulliver said.

Tatum dunked the ball, and the Celtics jumped to a 90-89 lead with 18.5 seconds left. But on the next possession, Knicks guard Jalen Brunson drew two foul shots and sank them both, putting Boston again down one, now with just 12.7 ticks on the clock.
This time, Mazzulla didn’t call a timeout. Instead, Tatum took the ball up the floor and eventually tried to get around Robinson again to no avail, turning the ball over in a swarm of Knicks defenders in the left corner and dropping the Celtics into an 0-2 series hole.
So why didn’t Mazzulla call a timeout?
“(We) got a good look on the exact same play 20 seconds earlier, tried to execute the exact same thing. They did a better job of their lower pick-up point,” Mazzulla said post-game. “We weren’t able to get the advantage that we had on the last Tatum dunk. So (a) good full-court setting, they subbed out (Karl-Anthony) Towns, we weren’t able to sub out Brunson, had action there, and just didn’t execute.”
Mazzulla said the remaining time was a consideration in his decision to not call his final timeout. The Celtics could attack the matchups available to them, which included Robinson.
“You don’t know that at the point of (Tatum) was driving left. (I) thought he had a good look at an angle, didn’t shoot it,” Mazzulla said. “Ran out of time.”
Overall, Mazzulla credited New York for making shots and creating stops over the fourth quarter that the Celtics didn’t. Boston led by 16 with 8:40 remaining and as many as 20 late in the third quarter.
“Yeah, they made every play, and I said, even throughout the end of the third (quarter), beginning of the fourth quarter, I thought we generated some good looks, and then I thought we had some live ball turnovers, and they took advantage of it,” Mazzulla said. “They made the necessary plays to win. We put ourselves in position to do that, and we just didn’t make the plays.”
The Celtics and Knicks will return to action Saturday for Game 3 at Madison Square Garden. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.

A federal judge has denied bail to a former assistant admissions director at Emmanuel College in Boston charged with soliciting a prospective student for sex after she came to the school for a tour in April and he allegedly accessed her personal data.
"It's just crazy to think that somebody like that could be on campus," said student Kelsey Rioux who received an email from the school informing students of the case.
Jacob Henriques, 29, was arrested last Friday and went before a judge Wednesday for a bail hearing in which the defense requested home confinement and a GPS monitoring device.
"Obsessive and predatory"
The judge called his behavior "obsessive and predatory" as she ordered him held.
Federal prosecutors say over the past year Henriques allegedly solicited as many as 16 young women, offering the 17-year-old he's charged with $400 to "have some fun" while sending pornographic material.
"There are no conditions of release that will ensure the safety of the community," argued prosecutor Craig Estes. He says Henriques relentlessly texted the 17-year-old until she blocked his phone and he allegedly started emailing.
Estes said Henriques also tried to obstruct justice by breaking his cellphone and throwing it in the trash before investigators arrived at his Boston apartment to question him. It was at that time, he says, Henriques confessed to his behavior.
Mother says daughter "living in fear"
The mother of one of his alleged victims pleaded with the judge to hold Henriques saying, "My daughter is living in fear, and the possibility of his release intensifies the fear not only for her but her entire family."
The Department of Justice says the arrest of Henriques was part of a wider federal probe named Operation Restore Justice to track and arrest alleged child sexual predators. The DOJ says more than 200 arrests were made from April 28 to May 2.
