The Gophers and Cowboys will meet this week for the first time since McNeese State beat the 'U' twice in the Seattle Regional in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. McNeese beat the Gophers 5-4 in 13 innings to begin the regional. Current Gopher Sydney Schwartz ended up taking the loss in that contest when she came in from the Gopher bullpen. McNeese then defeated the 'U' 1-0 to end their season in the NCAA Tournament. That tournament loss was the last time the Gophers appeared in the NCAA Tournament having not made the field last season. McNeese ended the Maroon and Gold's 10 year streak of reaching the NCAA Tournament. Current Gophers Kayla Chavez, Taylor Krapf, Nani Valencia, Breezy Burnett, and Sydney Schwartz were all on the 2023 team that fell to McNeese twice

Stats Highlights From Last Weekend The Gophers went 2-2 beating South Alabama twice and falling to #4 LSU twice. Taylor Krapf was one of the standout players at the plate as she hit .273 with 3 hits and 2 of those were solo home runs. She recorded 10 putouts in the field and slugged .818 for the weekend. Margaret Tobias was another standout performer on the weekend. She hit .600 with 6 hits in 10 at-bats. She scored 1 run, had 2 RBI, and walked 3 times. Her on-base % was .692 for the weekend. Freshman Tinley Easton had a good weekend at the plate as well. She hit .308 with 4 hits, 1 RBI, and an on-base % of .308. Only 2 Gophers hit over .300 this weekend. Highlighted by Tobias hitting .600. In the circle, Sydney Schwartz had another standout weekend. She posted a 1.50 ERA going 1-1 with 1 save as well on the weekend. She threw a 9-inning complete game shutout against South Alabama to help the 'U' secure the win. She appeared in 3 games, having started 2 of them. She had 7 strikeouts and held opponents to a .217 average over her 3 appearances.

Located about 90 minutes east of Houston and just 30 minutes from the Louisiana border is Beaumont, a former oil boomtown that still is mostly characterized by the petrochemical factories that loom large along its peripheries, bolstered by a busy shipping port—the fourth largest in the U.S. by tonnage. Though the town may look a little rough around the edges, if you scratch a little underneath the surface, you’ll discover some interesting finds that are worth the stop along I-10, with more underway in the coming years.

Cajun-Texas culture melds here to create a warm, family-friendly, and casual atmosphere. Pack your jeans (or shorts) and your easygoing attitude, and prepare to savor the hospitality of this destination on the bayou.

Things to Do

Visitors won’t feel out of place at all celebrating alongside locals at Beaumont’s festivals throughout the year, from Mardi Gras, which features nighttime family-friendly parades to the Beaumont Mural Festival, featuring live painting from national mural artists, along with vendors, music, arts and crafts.

The City of Beaumont sponsors a complimentary Saturday morning yoga class at Cattail Marsh Scenic Wetlands and Boardwalk, where you can show up and enjoy a restorative class overlooking the wetlands while listening to birdsong (mats are provided). Afterwards, stick around and ask the naturalist to help you find the resident bald eagle nest, or direct you to the nearest alligator (they’re shy, but they might let you snap a quick photo).

When prospectors finally struck oil near Beaumont at a place called Spindletop in1901, the town’s population grew from 9,000 to 50,000 almost overnight. It led to the formation of the modern petrochemical industry in the U.S. You can learn all about this history at Spindletop Gladys-City Boomtown Museum, operated by Lamar University, where you can take a self-guided or guided tour of a small recreated boomtown village with artifacts from the time. For an additional price, you can experience the “gusher reenactment,” where a water tower sprays 100 feet above a 65-foot oil derrick.

Though the heady days of the oil boom may be over, remnants of Beaumont’s golden age still exist. A few of the area’s historic homes offer public tours and events throughout the year. The 1906 Beaux-Arts style McFaddin-Ward House is unique in that all of the original artifacts stayed with the home from its beginning to 1950, and employees rotate out place settings and exhibit pieces seasonally so that visitors always see something new. Watch the calendar for free public events, such as live music from the porch. Visitors are welcome to bring a chair and a beverage and enjoy the music as people might have done in the 20th century.

Ask most residents of Southeast Texas, and they'll confirm that they've seen their share of alligators. Mostly shy and harmless, problems can crop up when people feed them. Enter: Gary Saurage, owner of Gator Country Adventure Park, and star of the 2010 show "Gator 911" and a new show called "Texas Gator Savers" which chronicles his mission to capture "nuisance alligators" in homes and neighborhoods and bring them to his facility to live out their days getting regular food in addition to the occasional hot dog treat from visitors. People can also pet snakes and other reptiles in the on-site petting zoo.

Beaumont is on the border of Big Thicket National Preserve, the first designated national preserve in the U.S. in 1974. Cypress trees with pleated skirt-like roots grow deep into the brackish water of the bayous that make up the preserve, home to alligators, snakes, birds, and fish. Though people can kayak and canoe through the miles of paddling trails, one of the easiest ways to see Big Thicket from Beaumont is to take a tour on the Ivory Bill through Neches River Adventures. Saturday morning public tours run from late March through late October and cost $26.50 for adults. Proceeds go toward the educational mission of the Big Thicket Association, a nonprofit group that advocates for the national preserve.

Where to Eat

One of the biggest draws to Beaumont in the springtime is its bountiful crawfish crop that really explodes during May and June. Though the industry isn’t quite as large as Louisiana’s, southeast Texas small farmers pride themselves on the meticulous care of their rotating rice-and-crawfish fields, which yield plump crawfish that the roadside farms sell directly to consumers. Stop at Southeast Texas Crawfish Farm for a sack to cook yourself, or head to local mainstay Floyds, where they serve them by the bucket.

Open in Beaumont since 1912, Patillo’s Bar-B-Q has the distinction of being the oldest family-owned and oldest Black-owned restaurant in the state of Texas. Its humble environs with dark wood-paneled walls, vintage signage, and manual cash register convey a welcoming atmosphere, where the friendly waitstaff is happy to walk you through the menu. A one-meat plate (your choice of pepper-sauced ribs, beef, pork, chicken, or ham) comes with three house-made sides, like mac and cheese or jambalaya—a steal at less than $10.

Redevelopment of the downtown area is still underway in Beaumont, but the city’s West End is growing significantly. For lunch or dinner, head to Buckstin Brewing Co.’s newest location, which feels like an upscale hunting lodge. Sample the house-made IPAs, pilsners, and sours, along with creative pizzas like Sweet Heat, with a marinara sriracha base topped with pepperoni drizzled with hot honey, or rotating seasonal pies like a “Holiday Feast” topped with turkey and gravy. For dessert, head next door to Michoacana La Potosina for Michoacan-style desserts, snacks, and house-made ice creams (the tequila flavor is a standout).

You can find several Asian cuisine options in Beaumont, from Vietnamese to Thai, but KO Korean Grill is the city’s first Korean barbecue. Opened in 2021 by homegrown young entrepreneur Min Dai, a champion for Beaumont as a sponsor of the city’s annual Mural Festival, his restaurant exudes Instagrammable funky charm with its tongue-in-cheek neon signs and vibrant artwork. Go for a lunch bento box or DIY your own Korean grilled meat experience with short ribs, bulgogi, shrimp, or lobster tail, along with a selection of soju. Next door, keep the good times rolling at Pour 09 Bar & Rooftop, an indoor/outdoor bar with craft cocktails and open mic nights.

Though king cake is traditionally a treat reserved for Mardi Gras season, you can treat yourself to this New Orleans dessert year-round at Rao’s Bakery, a family-owned restaurant since 1941. One caveat: you need to give the bakery 72 hours' notice to order one of these 12-inch ringed cakes, which come filled with strawberry, raspberry, or blueberry cream cheese filling. Or order a Chocolate Voodoo style, filled with chocolate chips, coconut, and cream cheese and topped with fudge. All cakes come with an insert-your-own plastic baby and Mardi Gras beads. You can also have them shipped to your house.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Amid numerous other detours, Southeast Texas drivers will soon have to cross the Maury Meyers Bridge off of their daily commute.

The Maury Meyers Bridge in Beaumont is scheduled to close on April 11, 2025, ahead of its demolition.

The closure is part of the ongoing I-10/69 Interchange Project, which aims to improve mobility, reduce congestion, and upgrade emergency evacuation routes, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

TxDOT says the bridge is being removed to address a long-standing height issue for freight traffic. The project will also include drainage upgrades to meet current design standards.

The bridge, dedicated in 1996 in memory of longtime Beaumont Mayor Maury Meyers, serves as a key connector between Old Town and the city’s West End.

While some residents say the closure will make commutes more difficult, others are welcoming the change.

“It’s another bump in the road... but we’re not worried about it,” said Debbie Bando, who owns a catering business near the bridge. “We own the front and the back so we can go out both ways. So we’re either going down 11th Street or we’re going to take the street behind us, 12th.”

Ward 4 Councilman Chris Durio said TxDOT has a long-term plan to maintain vital access in the area.

“They told us one part of the plan was they were going to knock the Maury Meyers Bridge down and Laurel Street will run under Interstate 10,” Durio said. “It’s going to be inconvenient, but it’s progress. We’ll get a new highway, more lanes. A lot of folks that live in Beaumont know other ways around. Just avoid the interstate altogether.”

TxDOT hasn't said when the bridge will be torn down, but the according to their website the entire I-10 project is slated to be completed in 2029.
