Roswell had the sixth-highest quality of life score among cities included in the list, though its creators stipulated it was not meant to be a 1-100 ranking.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Three Georgia cities have been included in a top-100 list of best places to live in the United States.

The list published by the outlet Livability included Roswell, Athens and Augusta. Roswell had the sixth-highest quality of life "LivScore" among the cities that made the list, though its publishers stressed it was not meant to be taken as a literal 1-100 ranking.

Livability bills its list as different for several factors, including that they only consider small and medium-sized cities with populations between 75,000-500,000 as well as a median home value of $500,000 or less.

"To us, that’s the sweet spot in size for getting plugged in, finding your people and feeling at home fast," the website states. "...Ours is the only list truly centered around affordability. Our cities may be smaller, but what you can accomplish in them is BIG."

The website said of Roswell: "With a prime location close to the city, a nearby airport and easy access to the Chattahoochee River, Roswell offers a combination of history, charm and modern amenities, including top-notch health care facilities and list-worthy schools, attractive neighborhoods and plenty of outdoor fun."

The writeup for Athens called it a city where "Southern charm meets a vibrant college town atmosphere." And Augusta, it said, "has much more to offer than just golf" including a great year-round climate, outdoor activities and median housing costs that are 50% lower than the national average.

Last year it looked like Georgia could lose every Big Lots. Now, the future is looking brighter.

Variety Wholesalers, the company behind Roses Discount stores, acquired 219 stores from Big Lots in February and has already begun reopening them. Here's what we know:

Are Big Lots stores reopening in Georgia

Nine Big Lots stores were reopened on April 10 as a first wave by Variety Wholesalers, according to news release. They included one in Kentucky, one in Louisiana, two in Mississippi, one in North Carolina, three in Tennessee, and one in Virginia.

Another 55 stores will open on May 1. The remaining stores will open through early June and lead up to a grand opening celebration that will take place across all stores this fall. This includes stores in Georgia, Alabama, the Carolinas, Florida, and more.

What Georgia Big Lots stores did Variety Wholesalers buy?

According to the Columbus Dispatch, Variety Wholesalers acquired 13 Big Lots stores in Georgia. They are:

Ollie's Bargain Outlets announced earlier this year that they had acquired 40 Big Lots for a total of 63 locations. This included one near Athens in Monroe.

Why did Big Lots go bankrupt?

Big Lots filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sept. 9, 2024. The company blamed inflation and high interest rates for taking a toll on its customers.

Los Angeles-based investment company Nexus Capital Management had agreed to buy most of its assets, the company said, but that deal fell through in December. Gordon Brothers then stepped in to buy Big Lots out of bankruptcy and then sell some of the stores to Variety.

Raising the minimum wage has been a popular idea, and multiple videos on social media claim President Donald Trump is doing that.

The specific claim is that he's signed an executive order raising it to $25 starting April 15, a huge leap from the $7.25 federal minimum wage most have not had changed since 2009. So is it true? What is Georgia's minimum wage? Here's what we know:

Is Trump raising the minimum wage?

We can confirm the $25 is false as it has been fact checked by multiple organizations, including Snopes. When he was still president-elect in December, Trump said he would consider raising the federal minimum wage. But he has made no moves to do so, and his U.S. Secretary Scott Bessent said outright he does not believe they should change it.

If anything, the Trump Administration has done the opposite. In March, the Labor Department said it would no longer enforce the $17.75 per hour minimum wage for federal contractors that was started under former President Joe Biden in 2021, potentially resulting in a massive pay cut for hundreds of thousands of private sector workers.

Trump also issued an executive order eliminating collective bargaining to negotiate work conditions for agencies with national security missions. The union representing foreign service workers is suing, saying the order also strips bargaining rights from "three-quarters of the federal employees who are currently represented by federal sector unions, demonstrating that it was not a targeted assessment based on national security concerns."

What is the minimum wage in Georgia?

Georgia's minimum wage is $5.15 per hour, according to the state's department of labor. However, there are some limited exceptions allowing the federal minimum wage of $7.25 to apply. Under Georgia Code § 34-4-3, here are those exceptions:

There were five different bills discussed during some phase of this recent legislative assembly that would have raised the state's minimum wage, according to the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute. But, none of them crossed over.

While not technically a state, Washington D.C. has the highest minimum wage at $17.50, according to Statista. Excluding D.C., here are the top five states:

Which states have the lowest minimum wage?

Georgia actually has one of the lowest minimum wage rates, tied with Wyoming for the absolute lowest. Multiple states don't have minimum wage rates, like South Carolina and Alabama, don't have minimum wage laws, so employers subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act must pay the federal minimum of $7.25, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
