ATHENS, Ga. — The No. 1 Georgia women's tennis team is set to host an NCAA Regional with first and second rounds to play this weekend from Friday, May 2 to Saturday, May 3 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the NCAA announced during its 2025 Selection Show on Monday.

Top-seeded Georgia will host Florida A&M (11-10, 6-2 SWAC), Iowa (13-10, 7-6 B10) and Georgia Tech (13-11, 6-6 ACC) in Athens where they will face off against the Rattlers in the opening round.

The Bulldogs — who won the 2025 SEC tournament title — received a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the 38th-straight year with an all-time tournament record of 98-35. The 2024 season marks the 14th consecutive year the Bulldogs have earned a host position for the first and second rounds of the tournament. The program has won two NCAA titles, winning its first in 1994 before earning a second in 2000.

Athens, GA (May 20, 2025) – A tragic early morning house fire on Monday claimed one life in an Athens neighborhood located off West Broad St. The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department responded to the blaze around 2:21 a.m. at 203 Briarcliff Rd, where they encountered a home already engulfed in heavy flames.

Upon arrival, firefighters were met with conditions too dangerous to permit an interior attack. Crews instead initiated defensive measures to contain the fire from the exterior.

After approximately three hours of firefighting operations, crews were able to enter the structure and located a body inside the residence. The identity of the deceased had not been confirmed as of Monday afternoon, and the Athens-Clarke County coroner is currently working to determine both the identity and the exact cause of death.

An investigation is underway to establish how the fire started and whether any contributing factors were involved. Further updates are expected as officials continue reviewing the scene and evidence.

Meltwich, a Canadian gourmet grilled cheese and comfort food chain, is coming to Athens.

The fast-casual restaurant has signed a lease at Rambler Athens, a mixed-use development near the University of Georgia.

The 1,606-square-foot restaurant, located at 558 West Broad St., is expected to open this fall, according to Atlas Real Estate Advisors.

Rambler Athens with over 700 residents, is conveniently located near downtown Athens and the UGA campus. The addition of Meltwich enhances the already vibrant retail scene.

Kirby Smart has made one thing clear throughout his tenure at Georgia, he is not afraid to target the best recruits in the country. Earning commitments from those players is easier said than done, but Smart and his staff have proven they know how to get the job done after signing top two recruiting classes each of the last three years.

One way that the Bulldogs have been able to dominate recruiting is by prioritizing the players from the state of Georgia. Thankfully for Georgia, the Peach State tends to be home to some of the best players in the country in nearly every recruiting class.

The best player in the 2026 class from Georgia is linebacker Tyler Atkinson, and as one would expect Georgia is in full pursuit. Atkinson's recruitment is beginning to get a little dicey, but the Bulldogs still sit in a great spot with the nation's No. 1 linebacker.

So as things unfold with Atkinson, it's important for Smart to continue working on the best players in the country in the 2027 class. Thankfully for Georgia, the best player in the 2027 recruiting class just so happens to be from Georgia as well.

5-star LaDamion Guyton could be the next great Bulldog

EDGE LaDamion Guyton is the No. 1 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class, according to On3. Guyton is from Savannah, GA which is about a four hour drive from Athens, but there are a lot of reasons to be excited whenever the best player in the country is from Georgia.

Guyton obviously has a long way to go in his recruitment, but Georgia sits in a very good spot right now. According to On3, the Bulldogs are the leader for Guyton as they are given a 45.3 percent chance to win this recruitment. Not too far behind UGA is South Carolina and Alabama, who are the only other teams with a realistic change in On3's eyes to win this battle.

Georgia's focus will remain on the 2026 class, but Guyton is someone Georgia fans should get familiar with in a hurry because the Bulldogs undoubtedly will be a major player in his recruitment.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized the Athens-Clarke County Public Utilities Department with a 2024 WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award for promoting WaterSense and water efficiency in 2023. The award marks the eighth consecutive year the Public Utilities Department has earned national recognition as a Sustained Excellence recipient. The Athens-Clarke County Public Utilities Department recognizes that water efficiency starts with us. We conduct an annual water loss audit and perform acoustic leak detection to improve the efficiency of our water distribution system to keep operating costs down and preserve our precious water resources.

Outreach and Education

The Water Conservation Office plans and implements a variety of educational programs to promote water efficiency. In 2020, the WCO reached over 2,300 children and adults despite the limitations created by the pandemic. They earned the EPA's WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award in 2021 for the fifth consecutive year.
