Now that spring has sprung in Amarillo, Texas people start getting the bug to get out and about, and plant and shop for fresh food and vegetables, along with baked goods and crafts. The best place to find all of that is at a farmers market.

Since most of our local farmers markets close for winter and open in the summer, the anticipation is real.

Just to prepare you most of the Farmers Markets will open in summertime, however, you might be able to catch a market or two leading up to being back every weekend.

One of the biggest farmers markets in the area is the Canyon Farmers Market.

Canyon Farmers Market Opening Dates

The Canyon Farmers Market will officially open on June 7th and run through September 27th. The market is usually open from 8 am - 12 n. The market vendors always have great products including fruits and vegetables, baked goods, plants, meats, crafts, t-shirts, and much more. Plus, they always have a row of food trucks serving up delicious breakfast, coffee, and other fare.

The Farmers Market at the Country Corner is located at 2201 E FM 1151. Their opening day is Saturday, April 19th, and will be open through November 1st on Thursdays at 5 pm until dark, and Saturdays 9 am - 1 pm.

Sunset Marketown at Arts in the Sunset

This was something new last year at Arts in the Sunset. Although a 2025 schedule hasn't been released (we'll update when it is), they are hosting a Spring Market.

Their Spring Market will take place on Saturday, April 19th, at 3601 Plains Blvd., they already have almost 60 vendors locked in for this event. The event is 10 am - 4 pm.

Golden Spread Farmers Market

This farmers market runs from July 1st to the first frost and is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. They usually pair up with the Sunset Marketown on Saturday mornings. They are located in the parking lot of Arts in the Sunset 3601 Plains Blvd.

Farmer's and Makers Market - Borger, Texas

The Borger Market will be June 14th and 28th, July 12th and 26th, and August 9th and 23rd. The event lasts from 6 pm - 9 pm,

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — A charter school closed "immediately" after a second confirmed measles case in Amarillo amid an outbreak.

The City of Amarillo announced the second case Wednesday morning.

Richard Milburn Academy then confirmed the case was on its campus.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we are closing the school immediately," said Dr. Amy Clifton, the principal of RMA Public Schools.

Classes will resume on Tuesday.

A free vaccine clinic will be hosted on the RMA campus from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday

Per public health guidelines, any student or staff member who is not vaccinated against measles will be required to remain in quarantine for 21 days. Individuals may return sooner only if documentation of current MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination is provided to the campus administrator. Those who do not provide proof of vaccination will be permitted to return after the 21-day period has passed, pending clearance from health authorities.

During the closure, the RMA facilities team will sanitize all buildings.

The first measles case reported by Amarillo Public Health was a Canyon ISD staffer.

There are 561 confirmed cases in Texas, according to new data published Tuesday. But that does not include the new case in Randall County.

Measles can lead to severe, life-threatening illness, particularly among unvaccinated individuals. The virus spreads through direct contact with infectious droplets or airborne transmission when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. It can remain in the air and continue to be infectious for up to two hours after the infected person has left the area.

Symptoms typically develop seven to 21 days after exposure and may include high fever, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes, and tiny white spots inside the mouth known as Koplik spots. A flat, red rash usually starts on the face and hairline three to five days after symptoms begin, spreading downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs, and feet.

A person with measles is contagious from about four days before the rash appears to four days after. Individuals who suspect they may have measles should stay home during this time to prevent spreading the virus.

Health officials advise that people who think they have measles or may have been exposed should isolate themselves and call their healthcare provider before arriving for testing. It is crucial to inform the provider about the potential measles exposure to receive instructions on how to visit the office without exposing others to the virus.

The most effective protection against measles is the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Amarillo Public Health recommends that infants aged 6 to 11 months receive an early dose of MMR to decrease the risk of developing measles, given the ongoing risk of exposure. Infants who receive an early dose should continue to follow the regular MMR vaccination schedule.

Adults and children uncertain about having received two doses of the measles vaccine should consider a second dose. Providers are urged to report any suspected cases to Amarillo Public Health immediately.

It seems that each Long John Silver's in Amarillo slowly closed its doors due to bad management and lack of care. When that great customer service and good food stops, people stop showing up to purchase food, and when money isn't coming in, things close. However, when these restaurants were run well, they did well.

It's a safe bet at the end, the bell sat silent. If you know you know.

As the years have passed since the last LJS closed in Amarillo people have constantly craved this delicious golden fried goodness. People will drive close to two hours to Lubbock or Clovis to get their LJS fix. On any given day, you can find a post about Long John Silver's on the many Amarillo Facebook Groups. This restaurant literally has a cult following from Amarillo.

A few years ago we reached out to LJS to see if there was even a chance the restaurant would be returning to the Yellow City and they never circled back to us.

Not long after we shared that article, we received a message and we have it on good authority from an employee from the City of Amarillo, that Amarillo will once again have a Long John Silver's

Yes, you all heard the collective cheers of Long John Silver fans all over the area. Here's what we know, according to a source at the City of Amarillo, LJS has received water service at a location in Amarillo. The address where the service was requested isn't in one of the former LSJ buildings, many of those have been torn down or are now other businesses.

It looks like the return of this fast-food seafood giant will be at 4406 S. Bell Street, which has been many restaurants since Arby's closed that location (it's one of our cursed buildings). If you've driven by recently, you might have noticed that something is definitely going on at the building.

This building started off as a popular fast food restaurant and since its closure has been a revolving door.

We did reach out to Long John Silver's to see if this is correct and if the "If We Did Well Ring the Bell" restaurant is coming back to Amarillo, but at the time of publishing we had yet to receive a response. As of now, we don't have an official yes we are coming to Amarillo from the company or franchiser.

If our City of Amarillo source is correct, this means that we could soon be sinking our teeth into one of those golden fried chicken planks or crunching on the crumbles.

On another note, Lubbock's Long John Silver's at 1101 SW 50th is about to get a makeover with a new building, so the Hub City might be without Long John Silver's for a few months as they remodel.
