...The National Weather Service in Amarillo TX has issued a Flood

Warning for the following rivers in Texas...

Canadian River at Amarillo 19N affecting Potter County.

For the Canadian River...including Amarillo 19N...Minor flooding is

forecast.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood

deaths occur in vehicles.

Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive

cars through flooded areas.

Additional information is available at www.weather.gov.

The next statement will be issued late tonight at 115 AM CDT.

...FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL FRIDAY MORNING...

* WHAT...Minor flooding is forecast.

* WHERE...Canadian River at Amarillo 19N.

* WHEN...Until Friday morning.

* IMPACTS...At 7.0 feet, Dirt road that runs east alongside the

river channel becomes flooded. This road leads to Rosita Creek

Flats Recreation Area, where primitive camping occurs.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...

- At 12:00 PM CDT Tuesday the stage was 4.1 feet.

- Bankfull stage is 7.0 feet.

- Forecast...The river will rise above flood stage this

afternoon to 9.4 feet just after midnight tonight. It will

then fall early tomorrow afternoon. It will rise to 9.0 feet

early Thursday morning. It will then fall below flood stage

Thursday evening to 2.9 feet Friday evening.

- Flood stage is 7.0 feet.

- Flood History...This crest compares to a previous crest of

9.5 feet on 06/24/1996.

The weather is warming up in the Texas Panhandle, and summer is almost here. One of my favorite things to do in the warmer months is to get out of town and go stargazing. Here are my favorite spots near with great views of the night sky without a telescope.

The great thing about the Texas panhandle is that it doesn't take you long to get out of town and into the middle of nowhere, which is where you want to be for stargazing. It's pretty easy to pick a random back road and drive.

You can just drive until you can't see the city lights on any given backroad and come away with a ton of stars to look at. Many of us have done this on more than one occasion in the panhandle. It's a part of the culture.

Lake Meredith honestly gives you some fantastic views of the night sky when it isn't cloudy. There are plenty of places you can camp that are far enough away from civilization that light pollution won't be much of a problem.

My favorite spot at Lake Meredith is the Blue West Campground. I've spent more weekends camping out there than I can count. On a clear night, you can see a sea of stars, the Milky Way, and I've even seen the Starlink satellites flying overhead.

What I like about Lake Meredith when it comes to stargazing is that most of the camping is first-come, first-served. You get a beautiful view of the lake, the sky, and the campground I mentioned earlier is free to camp in. You can't beat it.

Caprock Canyon is famous for the buffalo herd that calls it home, but there is a lot more there than that. They have some beautiful trails to hike, a spot where you can see a ton of bats hanging out, and when the sky is clear at night, you have a front seat to the cosmos.

Once again, this is a place with little to no light pollution, and after a day of hanging out at Caprock Canyon, stargazing is an amazing way to wind down. You won't need a telescope to take in the whole show. You'll see shooting stars, the Milky Way, and everything else you're hoping to see.

This is one of my favorite places because of everything there is to do at the park. It's not too expensive to camp here, and the mornings and evenings are gorgeous.

Palo Duro Canyon is another spot with excellent stargazing. There's no light pollution, really, and the stars light up across the sky. Like with the other two places, there isn't much of a need for a telescope. You'll get a whole show with just the naked eye.

Teeny Tiny Towns of the Texas Panhandle

Don't blink! You just might miss these TINY towns that are dotted around the Texas Panhandle.

Some of these are unincorporated communities and some of these are just plain ol' small!

Either way, these teensy weensy tiny towns and their populations will make you say "wow" (and maybe even squint and say "that's all!?"). Check them out:

Unfortunately, Amarillo, Texas, has seen a lot of businesses close. Many of these closures have been on the national level, while others have been on a local level.

One of those big, disappointing closures was Big Lots. At first, we thought Amarillo was spared, and both our Big Lots stores were staying open. Then we were told that we were losing the Grand store, and then came the announcement that all Big Lots stores were closing.

Big Lots was a great discount store that many people visited daily to save money on everyday products. They closed quickly.

These closures left big empty buildings on Grand and Bell St, just shells of the stores that once occupied the space. However, we've got some good news for one of those empty shells.

The empty Big Lots store is getting a reprieve, and dd's DISCOUNTS will be moving into the building, bringing back discount shopping on the east side of Amarillo.

dd's is a store where you can find all types of merchandise like clothes, shoes, home decor, toys, and more. dd's DISCOUNTS is owned by Ross Stores, Inc. They are the parent company of Ross Dress For Less, which is also located in the Grand Plaza shopping center.

We reached out to dd's DISCOUNTS to find out a tentative opening date or any other details, but at the time of publishing, they had yet to offer a response. However, what we do know is that it has been filed with the licensing and regulations in Texas. The new store should be opening by early 2026, if not sooner.

We have heard other rumors that the building will be split and shared with a Five Below, but we cannot find any confirmation that this is the case. However, if you look at dd's DISCOUNTS in other cities, they take up a building as big as that Big Lots building.

Either way, it'll be a nice addition and a great place to shop in Amarillo.

Amarillo Cursed Building - Westgate Mall

These are the many stores of Westgate Mall that have come and gone!

At one point in history, Amarillo, Texas has 6 of these popular fast-food restaurants serving each area of the city.

Yes! Amarillo had six locations, Pierce, Paramount, South Bell, South Western, Ross, and Westgate Mall. This fast food haven was a great place to get fish, shrimp and those heavenly chicken planks. Not to mention the crumbs from the batter that fell into the grease as they dropped your fish or chicken into fry. Truthfully, that is one of the best parts about Long John Silver's.

It seems that each Long John Silver's in Amarillo slowly closed its doors due to bad management and lack of care. When that great customer service and good food stops, people stop showing up to purchase food, and when money isn't coming in, things close. However, when these restaurants were run well, they did well.

It's a safe bet at the end, the bell sat silent. If you know you know.

As the years have passed since the last LJS closed in Amarillo people have constantly craved this delicious golden fried goodness. People will drive close to two hours to Lubbock or Clovis to get their LJS fix. On any given day, you can find a post about Long John Silver's on the many Amarillo Facebook Groups. This restaurant literally has a cult following from Amarillo.

A few years ago we reached out to LJS to see if there was even a chance the restaurant would be returning to the Yellow City and they never circled back to us.

Then most recently, Long John Silver's went on a mission to find out what cities wanted them to open a restaurant.

Not long after we shared that article, we received a message and we have it on good authority from an employee from the City of Amarillo, that Amarillo will once again have a Long John Silver's

Yes, you all heard the collective cheers of Long John Silver fans all over the area. Here's what we know, according to a source at the City of Amarillo, LJS has received water service at a location in Amarillo. The address where the service was requested isn't in one of the former LSJ buildings, many of those have been torn down or are now other businesses.

It looks like the return of this fast-food seafood giant will be at 4406 S. Bell Street, which has been many restaurants since Arby's closed that location (it's one of our cursed buildings). If you've driven by recently, you might have noticed that something is definitely going on at the building.

This building started off as a popular fast food restaurant and since its closure has been a revolving door.

We did reach out to Long John Silver's to see if this is correct and if the "If We Did Well Ring the Bell" restaurant is coming back to Amarillo, but at the time of publishing we had yet to receive a response. As of now, we don't have an official yes we are coming to Amarillo from the company or franchiser.

If our City of Amarillo source is correct, this means that we could soon be sinking our teeth into one of those golden fried chicken planks or crunching on the crumbles.

On another note, Lubbock's Long John Silver's at 1101 SW 50th is about to get a makeover with a new building, so the Hub City might be without Long John Silver's for a few months as they remodel.

Once we find out more and a timeline on the return of LJS to Amarillo, we'll keep you updated.
