Several upscale chains with locations in Northern Virginia have announced Easter brunch hours as well, including familiar names like Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, Chima Steakhouse, Eddie V's, Wildfire, The Capital Grille and Ruth’s Chris Steak House are open on Easter. It’s a good idea to call ahead for reservations.

Several casual restaurants are open for Easter as well, including Applebee’s, The Cheesecake Factory, Chili’s, Cracker Barrel, Panera Bread, Olive Garden, Perkins, and Texas Roadhouse.

As always, it’s a good idea to call ahead to make sure the chain locations near you are open.

Alexandria, Virginia to Proclaim April 21-28, 2025 International Dark Sky Week

Alexandria, VA – The City of Alexandria, Virginia, will officially proclaim April 21 to 28, 2025, as International Dark Sky Week, on Fri., April 18 at 11 AM on the wharf at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia. They join a global movement to raise awareness about the importance of dark skies and the detrimental effects of light pollution. Alexandria, Va. Councilwoman Jacinta Greene will present the proclamation signed by Alexandria, Virginia Mayor Alyia Gaskins, acknowledging the city’s commitment to responsible lighting practices and environmental sustainability. The proclamation highlights the city’s proactive measures in addressing light pollution; includes the adoption of DarkSky International criteria for Community Friendly Outdoor Sports Lighting and the certification of five athletic fields meeting these standards. It also recognizes Alexandria's ongoing efforts to convert streetlights to energy-efficient LEDs and the city’s Eco-City Charter, which prioritizes ecological sustainability.

"We are thrilled to have Alexandria, Virginia join our global community in celebrating International Dark Sky Week," said Eileen Kragie, founder/president of Dark Sky Friends. "Protecting our dark skies is not only crucial for the environment but also for the health and well-being of our residents. More than 30 hospitals in Virginia earned "A" grades based on safety, according to new rankings released by Leapfrog.

VIRGINIA — A new hospital safety report released Thursday shows more than 47 percent of hospitals in Virginia earned “A” grades based on their ability to protect their patients from often preventable harm.

Among those hospitals cited in The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2025 Hospital Safety Grades, 20 percent in Virginia were designated “Straight A” hospitals for sustaining their top scores for five or more consecutive grading periods. Nationwide, 346 hospitals — 12 percent of all eligible hospitals — were named to this select group.

Even more elite are the 11 hospitals that earned A grades on all 27 evaluation rounds over the 13 years of the report card. On this list are Inova Loudoun Hospital, Sentara CarePlex Hospital and Sentara Leigh Hospital in Virginia.

This list also includes Mayo Clinic-Phoenix in Arizona; French Hospital Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente Orange County-Anaheim Medical Center in California; Endeavor Health Elmhurst Hospital, Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital and University of Chicago Medical Center in Illinois; Saint Anne’s Hospital (Massachusetts); and Mason Medical Center in Washington.

According to the safety grades, no hospitals in Virginia received an 'F' or ‘D’ grade. (Deleted if not applicable). Additionally, 13 hospitals earned a 'C'.

The biannual reports from the independent hospital safety watchdog group assign ‘A,’ ‘B,' 'C,' 'D ' or 'F' grades to all U.S. general hospitals based on how well they prevent medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections. These mistakes harm one in four hospital patients and cause as many as 250,000 deaths every year.

Virginia ranks fifth among all states for the percentage of hospitals receiving “A” grades in the spring 2025 report card. In the fall rankings, Virginia ranked second on that report card.

The states with the highest percentage of A Grades for spring 2025 are Utah, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, South Carolina and Virginia.

The elite “Straight A” hospitals in Virginia cited for consistently high safety performance are:

Leah Binder, the president and chief executive of The Leapfrog Group, said “A” grades should be a source of pride for hospitals, but she warned them not to “rest on that laurel.”

“Patient safety is a relentless, never-ending quest to put patients first,” she said in a news release. “That’s why Leapfrog is highlighting the hospitals across the U.S. that have earned Straight A’s for over two years. Sustaining an A over multiple years reflects a deep-rooted commitment to patient safety.”

Other “A” hospitals in Virginia are:

The top five states with the highest share of Straight A hospitals since spring 2023 are Utah (29 percent), Connecticut (29 percent), New Jersey (27 percent), Rhode Island (22 percent) and Virginia (20 percent).

States with no Straight A hospitals for consistent performance over the past five grading cycles are Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming and Washington, D.C.

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Irene Burrus, a former federal worker and resident at Tilden Memory Care in Alexandria, celebrated her 110th birthday on April 5, 2025.

Zebra first reported Ms. Burrus’ birthday via its Facebook page about two weeks ago.

Her story was recently verified and archived with LongeviQuest, the global authority on maximum human longevity. “We admire the strength and wisdom of the people we research, and we created this platform to share their stories,” says the organization. One of their researchers, Eli Logan, reached out to a family member for more information.

Burrus had five siblings—two brothers and three sisters. Longevity ran in her family—each of her sisters lived into their mid to late 90s—though her mother passed away at the age of 49 from diabetes.

She never married or had children. But she led a remarkably independent life, living in the same apartment in Alexandria, Virginia, for over 50 years. “Instead of owning a car, she relied entirely on public transportation to get around,” reported LongeviQuest.

O’Flaherty, who visited with Burrus on April 2, brought balloons and a card, and spent some time with her. “I met Mr. Chilcoat, who owns and runs Tilden Memory Care, at the recent Senior Services of Alexandria gala, and he told me about Irene. I just had to visit her,” said O’Flaherty, who that ight was being honored with the Community Spirit Award for her volunteer work with seniors.

“He told me that Irene grew up on a hog farm, and had a really important job with the federal government for many, many years. It seemed kinda high level. Maybe she was even a spy, who knows?”

Even after she was 100, Irene remained an avid reader with kept up with current events and politics. “Remarkably, she continued to care for herself well into her centenarian years. In her younger days, she enjoyed staying active and frequently traveled, embracing life with energy and curiosity,” Logan reported in LongeviQuest.

“I sang to her. On my phone I played the old World War One song K-K-K-Katy, and Irene’s hands came out from under the blanket. She was trying to keep time,” said O’Flaherty. “I spend a lot of time with older people. Music of their past is the one thing I find that always lights a spark.”
