ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Investigators at the federal, state, and local levels spent months unraveling a drug trafficking operation they say spanned multiple states, including New Mexico.

The man who was reportedly behind it is Heriberto Salazar Amaya.

“He is the leader, and he was living in Salem, Oregon,” said U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. “With him, they got millions of dollars, cash, cars. But the drugs were in Albuquerque, Phoenix and Utah.”

16 people connected to the operation were arrested and drugs, guns, cash, and vehicles were seized. Officials say the Sinola drug cartel was behind it all.

“In Albuquerque alone, authorities seized staggering quantities of illegal drugs and assets including over 2.7 million fentanyl pills, 11 and half kilograms of concentrated fentanyl powder, 7 pounds of methamphetamine, multiple kilograms of heroin and cocaine, 41 firearms to include ghost guns and weapons modified for automatic fire, more than $600,000 in cash, and numerous luxury vehicles,” said Ryan Ellison, a U.S. attorney for the district of New Mexico.

The suspects were reportedly lacing other drugs with fentanyl.

“They put this in Xanax, they put this in Adderall. They put this in Molly,” said Bondi.

The feds say this bust will save lives.

“Together, we have sent a clear message we will not tolerate those who profit from poisoning American citizens,” Ellison said.

The DOJ says Salazar Amaya is from Mexico and entered the country illegally. But Bondi says they won’t deport him.

“I want them to stay in our prisons as long as possible. I’ve no desire to send them back to Mexico because they were coming across our border illegally. No longer will they be able to do that,” said Bondi.

She says decisions on deporting alleged gang members will be based on how much time they could receive in prison.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — What’s the price of fast reliable internet? Busted sewer and gas lines, destroyed landscaping, and a mess in the streets and on sidewalks according to some people who live in Albuquerque’s Northeast Heights.

Now, Albuquerque City Councilor Dan Champine is saying enough is enough.

“Numerous phone calls of complaints about the installation and the wake of chaos that they left afterward,” he said.

Champine introduced a resolution at the city council meeting Monday night that called for halting any new fiber optic installation permits from being approved for 90 days. The resolution stated, “Installation activities have proven to be highly disruptive to residents.”

“We’re going to put a hold on anything that isn’t started already,” he said. “So, if you’ve got a hole, we’re not going to tell you to stop and leave a hole sitting for 90 days.”

Champine said that break gives the companies a chance to fix the issues and meet with city leaders about how to move forward with less disruption.

Rio Rancho City Councilor Bob Tyler said they saw similar issues late last year with underground internet installation.

“It’s something we’re going to manage and work with and have open communication and dialogue between the residents and the installer and the city and it’s working well,” he said.

Tyler said he met with homeowners last week who had concerns about where digging would happen in their neighborhood.

“When they start to do the markings for all the lines — whether it’s sewer, water, power — they see all the paint in their yard, up in their rocks, and they think that’s where the installation is going to happen,” he said.

Instead, Tyler said most of the installation happens between the curb and the sidewalk. He also said it’s just growing pains. Rio Rancho city leaders don’t intend to pause any of the underground internet installation projects.

“The work needs to get done,” Tyler said. “We have all the underground infrastructure here, all of our lines are underground, so we need to do this and it’s for the benefit of the community.”

The Albuquerque City Council will vote on Champine’s resolution at its next meeting May 19. Whether you’re in Albuquerque or Rio Rancho, city councilors want to hear from anyone with issues regarding fiber optic installation in neighborhoods.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexicans will get their first chance to see “Rust” on the big screen this weekend, just not anywhere in the metro area.

Allen Theaters, a regional chain with several locations across New Mexico, is showing “Rust” starting Friday, May 2.

Showtimes.com shows listings in Alamogordo, Farmington, Gallup, Las Cruces, and Roswell though next Thursday.

New Mexicans who do not want to drive to any of those locations will be able to watch the film on streaming services, including Apple TV and Prime Video.

The movie is infamous for the deadly shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins outside of Santa Fe. Actor Alec Baldwin was holding a gun that fired a live bullet on set, killing Hutchins and injuring the film’s director Joel Souza in October 2021.

A Santa Fe jury convicted the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, of involuntary manslaughter in 2024. She is serving 18 months in prison.

Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case against Baldwin in 2024, ruling prosecutors purposely hid evidence from Baldwin’s defense team.

The decision to continue filming “Rust” following the deadly shooting was controversial, but ultimately made with the blessing of Hutchins’ husband, who was named an executive producer.

“Rust” did not return to New Mexico, as producers opted to finish making the film in Montana.

Bianca Cline, the cinematographer who finished the film, said she studied Hutchins’ notes to honor her vision.

“Rust” had its world premiere in 2024at a film festival in Poland. A full house audience applauded at the end.
