ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A newborn baby was discovered dead in a dumpster near some Albuquerque businesses Tuesday morning.

This happened along Rio Grande Boulevard near I-40 early Tuesday morning. Police are just beginning its investigation.

“Any time a baby’s death is reported, it affects a lot of different people in a lot of different ways,” said APD Public Information Officer Gilbert Gallegos.

Police say unhoused people were looking through a dumpster when they came across a baby partially wrapped inside a blanket. They immediately got a hold of on-site security and 911 was called around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

“They were able to get into the dumpster and locate the infant, the newborn baby, determined it was deceased and that’s when our detectives were called out to start an investigation,” said Gallegos.

According to APD, no one showed up at any area hospitals overnight. APD is asking anyone with information to come forward.

“Detectives also believe that the mother of this newborn may be in need of medical attention, so we are putting a plea out there for anyone who may know who the mother is to get that medical attention, that is first and foremost,” said Gallegos.

A nearby business owner, Alex, says while things happen here or there, this was not the scene he was expecting to drive up to coming into work.

“Honestly, it’s not surprising, you do see a lot of stuff going on around here. This is the worst thing that I have seen with a baby involved, it’s real tragic, but we do see a lot of stuff happening around here,” said Alex, owner of Old Town Tire & Automotive.

APD was not able to answer how long the baby was in the dumpster before they were discovered.

We also don’t know the gender of the child.

NM awards over $3M to 7 advanced energy firms

New Mexico awards over $3 million to seven energy tech startups, boosting innovation in the state's advanced energy sector through non-dilutive funding.

The New Mexico Economic Development Department Office of Science and Technology hosted its Advanced Energy Awards program on April 16, where it held final pitches and awarded $3.36 million to seven startups focused on energy technology, according to Office of Science and Technology director Nora Meyers Sackett. This includes:

"New Mexico has always been an energy state. ... What kind of energy that looks like? It's obviously changing, and we are meeting the need for that industry," Meyers Sackett said.

The amount of funding awarded to startups was similar to last year's award’s pilot program, but distributed differently. In 2024, $3.4 million was awarded with amounts ranging from $776,000 to $300,000.

The New Mexico Advanced Energy Award (NMAEA) program is a competitive state-funded grant that awards non-dilutive funds to New Mexico startups which submit proposals geared towards advanced energy innovation and commercialization.

The program, developed to support retention and expansion of businesses, will help early-stage companies develop products deemed by event judges to have high growth potential.

Applications submitted by startups required a detailed executive summary, a slide deck/presentation, budget and capitalization table.

Startups also had to provide projections of what they expect the company to look like in the next five years, including staff, revenue and growth projections, according to the NMOST website.

Albuquerque Business First talked with VastVision co-founder and CEO Kyle Guin, one of this year’s top two awardees.

VastVision is focused on inventory management technology to help companies manage critical assets using passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips (microchips which can be attached to or embedded in objects), AI-driven software and automation.

Guin said non-dilutive funding sources like this one protects leaders’ equity in the company. The VastVision team took a “bit of a calculated risk” earlier this year. The startup had a fully committed pre-seed funding round and decided to turn that down in order to further de-risk its technology.

“We really wanted to build a better picture of what we think this company is going to look like. When we took that calculated risk, we had to operate incredibly lean,” he said.

Guin said this award is important following that lean period, because the award will allow the company’s team to, with some of its venture funding, build out a small research manufacturing facility in Albuquerque.

VastVision having its own facility would be significant according to Guin, because it would allow the company to generate its own organic intellectual property and complete some tests and fabrication absent of the red tape experienced in government facilities it currently uses including those at Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory or the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT).

VastVision just finished a TRGR (Technology Readiness Gross Receipts) Technology Readiness Initiative project with Sandia, leveraging $150,000 with the lab and working inside their facility. They also have an active CRADA with LANL, and access to CINT under the New Mexico Lab-Embedded Entrepreneur Program (NM LEEP) fellowship.

“Hopefully (the new facility) just speeds things up overall, and helps us further de-risk the tech, … and then we can kind of revisit that the more venture funding side,” Guin said.

Guin said the facility timeline is “as soon as possible,” but he anticipates choosing a location, purchasing machines and having a fully functional facility could take six to eight months, so the end of 2025 is a reasonable estimate.

The company has five full-time employees and one intern, and is looking to hire two more.

The General Services Administration has quietly expanded its list of federal properties in New Mexico slated for disposal, with two more buildings now on the chopping block.

Two more New Mexico buildings have been marked for disposal by the General Services Administration (GSA), as the “landlord” of the federal government trims its real estate portfolio.

The two buildings constitute nearly 80,000 square feet of space.

On March 4, the GSA posted a list of over 440 “non-core” properties across the nation marked for disposal, including seven New Mexico properties, but deleted the list from its website hours later. Since then, the GSA has incrementally published short lists of properties marked for sale. The two New Mexico properties now listed for disposal did not appear on the original sell-off list that was removed.

The Albuquerque warehouse depot at 1600 12th St. NW was listed for sale on March 3. The building is 76,682 square feet; the most recent occupant is unknown.

The GSA Motor Pool site at 2500 Cerillos Road in Santa Fe, a 2,654-square-foot space, also appeared on the new list of properties slated for sale on April 10. The building one served as the Army Reserve building until 1997 when it was purchased as part of the process to create the state government’s West Complex, according to the New Mexico General Services Administration website.

These two properties join a list of 15 New Mexico leases listed to be scrapped by DOGE, including two Forest Service offices, and two Indian Health Service offices.

"We are accelerating the disposition of the following assets and invite interested parties to express interest to [email protected]," the GSA website reads.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After years of planning, the Flix Brewhouse on the eastside is finally coming to fruition.

“It doesn’t always line up with the expectations of construction schedules and permitting and all those other things. But we are almost there, we will be open the first week of May,” said Chance Robertson, CEO of Flix Brewhouse.

Robertson says their location on the westside has always done well, and they’ve been looking for an opportunity to bring that experience to the other part of town.

“We have often found ourselves saying, ‘I wish we had a few more seats, I wish we had a few more screens.’ So when this opportunity came available to not only get a few more seats and a few more screens and get to the other side of town, we know people in ABQ are either eastside or westside often, so we wanted to make sure we were on both sides of town,” said Robertson.

“This is the first city to have two Flix Brewhouses, and we base it off revenue and admits, and the requests for the people in the community to want to bring this to this location,” said Victor Lopstaine, regional director of operations for Flix Brewhouse.

Aside from business on the eastside, they also hope being next to Hinkle Family Fun Center will bring more business to the area.

“I think there is just a lot of that, ‘Oh it’s in our neighborhood now too,’ that is the thing we are hearing the most about and that is super exciting for us and we can’t wait to get open,” said Robertson.
