COLUMBUS, Ohio – Led by a 10-point game from Brynn Ammerman, the No. 20 Ohio State women's lacrosse team defeated Akron, 13-4, Wednesday in Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. The Buckeyes, who shut out the Zips for the final 34:18, improve to 4-0 on the year. Akron is now 3-2.

The Short Story Two weather delays pushed the start of the game back by nearly 90 minutes. When play got underway, Ohio State took control quickly, scoring twice in the first three minutes and ending the first quarter ahead 5-3. The Buckeyes tallied the first two goals of the second quarter for a 7-3 lead. Akron notched a goal at 4:18, which stood as its last goal of the day. The Buckeyes carried an 8-4 lead into halftime and scored the only goal of the third for a 9-4 advantage. Four Ohio State goals in the last quarter made the final score 13-4.

Brynn Ammerman had a hat trick, seven assists and 10 points for the Buckeyes, tying for fourth in program history for single game assists and points. She was one shy of the program records of 11 points and eight assists, both set three times before. It was the first 10-point game since Liza Hernandez against Detroit Mercy Feb. 10, 2019. The last seven-assist day was by Jennifer Porretto against Canisius March 14, 2015. Ammerman's seven points in the first half tied for sixth in school history and were the most since Hernandez had eight in the game vs. Detroit.

Zoe Coleman also had a hat trick for the Buckeyes vs. Akron and Kate Tyack had three points with two goals and an assist. Kampbell Stone had two goals in the win. The Buckeyes limited the Zips to 19 shots for the game.

A wintry mix of just about everything Mother Nature can conjure up is headed toward Greater Akron.

The National Weather Service says the region should experience a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain Wednesday afternoon.

If the storm system stays on its current projected path, the weather service says Greater Akron should be spared the worst of this particular storm as temperatures should rise above freezing by Wednesday night turning the precipitation over to all rain.

But it is still a bit early and a degree or two difference could mean more freezing rain and even snow.

And there's more wintry weather coming for the weekend.

Another round of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain is expected in northern Ohio on Saturday.

Temperatures are expected to plummet on Sunday with lows in the single digits and highs in the teens by Monday.

What's the forecast?

Tuesday: Cloudy, with a high near 34. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Tuesday night: A slight chance of snow before 8 p.m. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 22. Northeast wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday: Snow likely before 2 p.m., then snow likely, possibly mixed with freezing rain and sleet between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., then rain likely after 3pm. Cloudy, with a high near 38. East wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Little or no snow and sleet accumulation expected.

Wednesday night: Rain. Low around 32. Southeast wind 11 to 16 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Akron School Board member Pastor Gregory Harrison plans to introduce a resolution at Monday's school board meeting requesting that Superintendent Dr. Michael Robinson be placed on paid leave.

AKRON, Ohio — Akron School Board member Pastor Gregory Harrison plans to introduce a resolution at Monday's school board meeting requesting that Superintendent Dr. Michael Robinson be placed on paid leave during an ongoing investigation.

"Board members can vote their conscience, but I think at this point, for me, I've heard more than enough. I think to protect everyone, he needs to be on administrative leave," Harrison said.

There are seven members on the school board. It would take a majority vote of the board in order to place Robinson on leave.

News 5 reached out to all of the board members. Robinson is the only one who has responded as of Tuesday afternoon.

In an article posted online Monday, The Akron Beacon Journal reported it had interviewed more than two dozen APS employees who said Robinson threatens and berates staff.

"We need to make sure that we are validating and that we are protecting people as well as the superintendent. He has a right to due process," Harrison said. "I think the protection of workers and staff and the superintendent's rights outweigh anything, and we need to be talking about having him on administrative leave while we finish this."

News 5 has made multiple requests to interview Robinson. There has not been any response from the district as of Tuesday afternoon.

However, a spokesperson for APS did release the following statement to The Akron Beacon Journal, which appeared in the Monday story: "The superintendent remains dedicated to fostering a safe and productive learning environment for all students and staff. He will provide further statements as appropriate, adhering to the constraints of the ongoing investigation."

Robinson was given a five-year contract in 2023, making an annual salary of $240,000. Akron Public Schools is the second largest district in Northeast Ohio and has about 20,000 students and 4,500 employees. Its budget is around $300 million.

Since last December, the superintendent has been under investigation in the wake of a flood of allegations and criticism. He has continued to work on the job during that time.

Pat Shipe, president of the Akron Education Association, has been vocal in her belief that Robinson should have been placed on leave months ago.

"It is so dysfunctional. It is such an atmosphere of tension and bullying and retaliation that I don't recognize Akron Public Schools anymore, and it breaks my heart," Shipe said.

Shipe believes complaints that have been made over the last few months indicate a hostile work environment.

Mark Williamson, the former communications director for APS, said Robinson called two female reporters a derogatory and sexist slur during a closed meeting.

In a letter, school board member Rene Molenar accused Robinson of bullying and said the superintendent called her "a headache" and a "backstabber."

William Reynolds, a father of five children with three of them currently in Akron schools, is also concerned with the allegations.

"I think if there's something coming from more than one person, that gives it some clout," Reynolds said.

But others have defended Robinson. Akron resident Cynthia Blakon on his behalf during a January school board meeting.

"We need Dr. Robinson to continue to fight for our children and holding individuals and departments accountable," Blake said.

Two law firms are part of the investigation of the superintendent.

Brennan Manna & Diamond is conducting it. Bricker and Graydon LLP is overseeing it. It's not clear if the investigation will wrap up and be presented to the board at the Monday meeting later this month or in the coming months.

How much the investigation is costing taxpayers remains unclear. Harrison said he doesn't know how many hours the attorneys have put in so far while conducting interviews and gathering information.

News 5 made a detailed public records request to APS for things like contracts and invoices from the law firms.

The district sent a January "engagement letter" from Bricker Graydon LLP, which was signed by Board President Carla Jackson and Stephen Thompson, the district's treasurer.

The letter states the law firm customarily charges an hourly fee for legal services, which currently ranges from $275 to $330, but the letter doesn't give an estimate for a potential total bill.

"The fees and costs relating to this matter are not predictable. Accordingly, we have made no commitment to you concerning the maximum fees and costs that will be necessary to resolve or complete this matter," attorneys for the law firm wrote.

News 5 did not receive any public records documents connected to Brennan Manna & Diamond, but in an email the district stated "Please be advised that your request has been denied in part to the extent that your request seeks the narrative portion of an attorney invoice which is protected by attorney client privilege and not subject to disclosure."

While it's not known how much the district has been or will be billed for the investigation, Shipe feels there should be more transparency to the public about what's happening.

"Again, everything is behind closed doors," Shipe said.

Reynolds said he'll be watching and waiting for the outcome of the investigation. He believes it's unfortunate that all of the distractions are taking the focus away from the kids in schools.

"I hope this mess gets cleaned up. If the superintendent made some mistakes, I hope he owns it."

We're tracking some heavy rain for all of Northeast Ohio this weekend.

CLEVELAND — A Flood watch has been issued for most of Northeast Ohio — which began at 8 p.m. Wednesday and continues until 8 a.m. Sunday — as the National Weather Service in Cleveland says, “several rounds of showers and storms will impact the region” with heavy rainfall.

3News has also activated a Weather Impact Alert for Saturday into early Sunday as a result.

“Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations,” according to the weather alert from NWS. "Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Extensive street flooding and flooding of creeks and rivers are possible."

Flood warnings are also in effect for several rivers, creeks and streams in Northeast Ohio through Sunday afternoon and evening. For most of these warnings, forecasters expect minor flooding.

3News Senior Meteorologist Matt Wintz says the latest forecast shows Northeast Ohio can expect a general 1-2 inches of rain, but 3 inches is also possible in spots. While it's still a lot of rain, it's a bit less in our region than initially anticipated.

"It’s not going to linger Sunday as much as we thought it would," Wintz says.

A flood advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday in Ashland, Holmes, Richland, and Wayne counties. In Wooster, a nonprofit providing shelter and support services to people experiencing homelessness saw ankle-deep water flood its office space, and some streets were virtually impassable.

"We got a little wet inside the building — about ankle-deep in our offices," said Cynthia Bonidie, executive director of Homeward Bound. "I expected it, and we were prepared. We only had like an hour, though."

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron softball team split a doubleheader with the Ohio Bobcats on Friday, winning the first game 3-2 while falling 7-3 in game two.

GAME 1 | Akron 3, Ohio 2

The Akron Zips took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 3-2 win over the Ohio Bobcats on Friday.

Th Zips pounded out eight hits as Meagan Lee and Lily Sullivan had multiple hit performances. Lee posted a perfect 3-for-3 performance with a double and RBI, while Sullivan went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Andrea Day drove in two runs on a single to left field.

Macy Walters (9-7) got the win for Akron (19-17, 6-5). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, zero earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Zips got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Akron got on the board thanks to Meagan Lee's RBI double.

The Zips then held the Bobcats scoreless before expanding their lead in the fourth inning. Akron picked up two runs when a single from Day brought home Haley Glass and Sullivan, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Zips. Ohio put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Akron still held on for the 3-2 win.

Sophia Wygast strung together three hits, but the Akron Zips fell to the Ohio Bobcats 7-3 Friday.

Wygast's three-hit day led the Zips offensively. Brooke Sivek put together a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sydney Selker also chipped in for Akron, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

Macy Walters (9-8) took the loss in the circle for Akron (19-18, 6-6).

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Zips got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Akron got an RBI single from Selker, scoring Sullivan from second base.

The Bobcats failed to push any runs across before the Zips offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Akron scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Sivek, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Zips.

Akron's lead had disappeared once the sixth inning arrived and turned into a 5-2 Ohio advantage, when the Zips cut that deficit to 5-3. The Zips were unable to get any closer, as Ohio added two runs to their tally on the way to a 7-3 final.
