The sudden termination of Job Corps facilities around the country by the Trump administration is creating confusion for students who now need to find new housing, including at the program's Manchester campus.

As of last week, approximately 240 students were enrolled in Job Corps in New Hampshire, with all but a handful also residing on the Manchester campus. Officials said those students will have until June 13 to find new housing.

Job Corps, which was founded in 1964, offers high school diploma classes, as well as apprenticeship opportunities in nursing, manufacturing and other in-demand fields. Many of the students are from disadvantaged backgrounds, according to Stephanie Ashworth, the Manchester campus director.

“They're here getting a second chance and getting their education and pursuing their dreams,” she said. “And we're taking that away from them.”

On Friday, U.S. Department of Labor announced it was ending the 99 Job Corps programs nationally that are managed by outside contractors, including the Manchester program, which is run by Nevada-based Adams and Associates. The fate of government-managed campuses isn’t yet clear.

“Job Corps was created to help young adults build a pathway to a better life through education, training, and community,” said U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer in the announcement. “However, a startling number of serious incident reports and our in-depth fiscal analysis reveal the program is no longer achieving the intended outcomes that students deserve.”

The Labor Department put the price tag per participant at over $80,000 annually. In a statement, the federal government pointed to low completion rights and what it considers a high number of safety incidents on campuses nationwide.

Ashworth said the Manchester program was devastated by the Covid pandemic, and has only recently begun to regain its footing. She said there is no record of violence or other infractions locally, and that nearly 70% of all students who enrolled in the program found jobs after graduating.

“And then they climb the ladder,” she said.

There are 112 employees at the Manchester campus who are facing layoffs at the end of the month. In the meantime, staff members are working with the state and city to ensure housing for approximately 40 students the program has identified as not having another place to live.

State Sen. Pat Long, who represents Manchester, said he and other officials are hoping that they can continue to use the campus to house students, but are also looking into alternative options. The campus buildings are owned by the federal government, but the city owns the land.

“We're assuring that there's nobody going to be left out on the street,” Long said.

In 2015, the federal government spent a reported $35 million to construct the campus, which includes buildings and residential halls, spread out across 25 acres. New Hampshire was the last state to open a dedicated Job Corps facility.

The month of May had no shortage of rain across New Hampshire, resulting in near-record precipitation totals in parts of the state.

In Concord, 8.73 inches of rain fell last month, making May 2025 the third wettest on record. Records in Concord date back to 1868.

Notably, Manchester received 10.27 inches of rainfall in May, marking just the sixth time the Queen City has seen over 10 inches of rain in a single month.

Lebanon recorded 8.71 inches of rain, which is nearly 5 and a half inches above average for May in the Upper Valley.

Along with the rainfall, there were many ups and downs in temperature.

While big temperature swings are common in the spring, Concord recorded a record cold high temperature of 47 degrees on May 22. There were five 80-degree days, which is right on average for May.

Temperatures in the state capital were just shy of 1 degree above average for the month.

MANCHESTER, N.H. —

The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, may be visible Sunday night in New Hampshire thanks to a powerful solar storm.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm watch, with the peak activity expected between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday night.

Skies may feature a few passing clouds, but viewing conditions should be optimal if the Northern Lights actually occur.

Best Viewing Times

The optimal window for viewing the auroras is between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., when the skies are darkest and the auroral activity is most likely to occur . Given the anticipated peak tonight, this timeframe is your best chance to catch the light show.

Viewing Tips

While the northern lights can be visible to the naked eye, their visibility depends on factors such as weather, aurora strength, and your location. Using a slow-shutter speed on your camera will allow for a better view.

If your camera shows the greens or pinks that are typical of the northern lights, snap a quick picture and then put your phone away to let your eyes adjust to the darkness.

MANCHESTER, N.H. —

Multiple strong storms pushed through New Hampshire Friday afternoon and early evening, triggering multiple warnings.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued beginning after 2:45 p.m., and as some warnings expired, more were issued.

Flash flood warnings were also issued Friday evening. A flash flood warning in Henniker was set to expire at 8 p.m., while a warning in Hillsborough was set to expire at 8:45 p.m.

Hazards with the storms include 60-mph wind gusts and hail.

A flood watch, meanwhile, is in effect for all of New Hampshire, except Coos County.

The flood watch will be in effect through the late evening.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue throughout the day, especially in central and southern New Hampshire.

Any additional storms could be severe, with the potential for downpours, gusty winds and hail.

The best chance for severe weather is between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Heavy rainfall or repeated rounds of downpours in spots could lead to localized flooding concerns. Up to 3 inches of rain will be possible in some spots before we dry out.

A nearby front will keep the chance of showers and thunderstorms in place statewide Saturday. This will likely be the 12th straight Saturday with measurable rain in Concord.

Sunday is expected to bring more sunshine, lower humidity and comfortable temperatures, with highs in the 70s.

A new shop in Manchester is dedicated to the most popular media franchise of all time: Pokémon.

"To be able to pioneer something like this, I thought was long overdue, considering how big of a hobby Pokémon is," said Chris Tagliareni, owner of Collectible Tags.

Pokémon cards, especially professionally graded rare examples, can be worth thousands of dollars. They've experienced a surge in popularity, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tagliareni credits a newer set of cards, called 151, with bringing many adults back into collecting. It only features the original 151 characters, released in the mid-1990s, like Pikachu and Charizard.

"They remade a bunch of artworks and they made it really, really nice for collectors that had fallen out of the hobby," he said.

Collectible Tags has both contemporary and vintage options, including sealed Pokémon card packs and graded single cards.

The shop, which opened a brick-and-mortar location on Elm Street in May, is an extension of the business that started by streaming on an online auction website. Collectible Tags continues to stream on multiple platforms and has several studios.

"It's like a show really," Winter Drechsler, marketing and media director, said of the streams.

Drechsler added that it's popular for people to buy a pack of cards, and watch the streamer open it live to see what's inside. The cards are then shipped to the buyer.

If a pack contains a rare "chase" card, viewers get excited in the live chat.

"It's like if you were watching a TV show and you're interacting with the host while they're putting the show on, and you're a part of it," Drechsler said.

Drechsler said Collectible Tags' new store hopes to bridge that online community into in-person gatherings, through tournaments, workshops and more.

"We wanted to become a place where collector and trading card game players could all just hang out and just be a part of something that they love and enjoy that together in real life." she said.
