GEORGIA — Some residents of Georgia will get a second payment from the Social Security Administration in May.

People who receive Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will receive their usual payments on May 1 and a second payment on May 30.

That is because June 1 falls on a Sunday. SSI payments are typically issued on the first day of the month, but are moved ahead if the first falls on a weekend or holiday, the agency explained.

Of the some 70 million Americans who receive Social Security benefits, 7.4 million receive SSI, the program for disabled and blind Americans with little to no income or assets.

Of Georgia’s 246,399 Social Security recipients, 218,686 received SSI checks in January 2024, according to the most current data.

The maximum SSI payment for 2025 is $967 for an individual and $1,450 for a couple. The amount can vary based on income, certain family members’ income, living situations and other factors.

Other Social Security Administration benefits, such as retirement, survivor and spousal benefits, are distributed based on either the recipient’s age or the length of time they have been receiving benefits.

Atlanta, GA (April 22, 2025) – A devastating house fire in northwest Atlanta claimed one life overnight, according to reports from Atlanta Fire Rescue. The fire occurred in a residence on Madrona St, where crews were dispatched around 1 a.m. after receiving emergency calls regarding flames engulfing the home.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy fire conditions concentrated at the front of the structure. Crews moved swiftly to contain the blaze and began interior searches once it was safe to enter. Tragically, a deceased individual was found in the bathroom of the home after the flames were brought under control.

Authorities also confirmed that a man in his nineties was able to escape the burning home and was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. His current condition has not been disclosed.

The house was declared a total loss, and fire investigators are now working to determine the cause of the blaze. Officials indicated that the extent of the damage may present challenges in uncovering how the fire began. At this time, no further information has been released regarding the identity of the deceased or possible contributing factors.

ATLANTA, GA — The immigration status for more than one-hundred Georgia students must be restored per a federal judge's order to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, media reports say.

Judge Victoria M. Calvert of Georgia's Northern District gave President Donald Trump's administration until 5 p.m. Tuesday to reinstate valid immigration statuses for 133 students in Georgia, ABC News Philadelphia reported, citing a temporary federal court order.

The 14-day order was issued Friday to keep the Trump administration from withdrawing student visas after the feds were sued by the American Civil Liberties Union in Georgia, Newsweek reported.

Many of the students were in good academic standing and about to graduate before their documents were wiped without prior notice, proper explanation or an opportunity to respond, attorneys said, according to FOX News.

"The Constitution protects everyone on American soil, so the Trump administration cannot ignore due process to unjustifiably threaten students with the loss of immigration status, and arrest and deportation," Akiva Freidlin, senior staff attorney at the ACLU-Georgia, said in a statement obtained by Newsweek. "We believe this ruling shows the students are likely to prevail on their claims and we are pleased the court ordered the government to halt its unlawful actions while the lawsuit continues."

ICE was accused of illegally closing records in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, ABC reported.

The Department of Human Services uses SEVIS to monitor schools, visitor programs and nonimmigrant students in the U.S., according to the ICE website.

Terminating the records made way for the students to be deported, the lawsuit alleged, ABC reported.

Students represented in the lawsuit had largely faced traffic violations before the charges were dropped; others were people who had never been arrested or cited, ABC reported.

A number of the students were close to graduation, and some of them were participants in a work program, the news outlet reported.

Next steps once the temporary order expires were not immediately known.
