Antioch, TN (April 22, 2025) – A vehicle crash resulting in injuries occurred early Tuesday morning along Murfreesboro Pike in Antioch, prompting an emergency response in the southeastern section of Metro Nashville.

The collision was reported at approximately 7:41 a.m. near the 4000 block of Murfreesboro Pike, a busy multi-lane roadway that serves as a major commuter route through Antioch. While the total number of vehicles involved has not been released, the incident caused delays and required immediate medical and fire services at the scene.

First responders, including paramedics, assessed and treated individuals hurt in the crash. A variety of injuries were reported, and at least one person was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Authorities have not disclosed the identities or exact conditions of the injured individuals at this time.

As emergency crews worked to secure the area and assist those affected, portions of the roadway were temporarily impacted. Law enforcement has stated that the crash is under investigation and is reviewing all factors that may have contributed to the collision.

Big Lots is reopening an additional four stores in Tennessee.

On April 8, it was reported that Big Lots would be making a comeback after it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September and closed over 600 locations.

In January, Big Lots announced its sale to Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, and as part of the deal, Variety Wholesalers acquired 219 Big Lots stores and two distribution centers.

“We’re thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family,” Variety Wholesalers CEO Lisa Seigies said in a news release.

These are the four stores set to open in May.

Which Big Lots stores are reopening in Tennessee?

How many Big Lots are in Tennessee?

Most recently, the Big Lots website listed 39 locations in Tennessee. The website now only shows the nine announced store reopenings.

Before the closures started, Tennessee had almost 50 Big Lots storefronts.

Why is Big Lots selling stores?

Like many other retailers, Big Lots is being affected by high inflation and interest rates. Additionally, a news release from the company said economic trends, such as customer spending on home and seasonal products, have affected the company's revenue.

When it filed for bankruptcy, Big Lots was the fourth-largest home goods retailer in the country. At the beginning of 2024, it had 1,392 stores and more than 27,000 employees. The store also earned $4.7 billion in 2023 revenue.

The company had previously reported that sales in the first quarter of 2024 fell more than 10% compared to the previous year, though Big Lots reported improved performance in the second quarter.

"While the company's underlying performance has been improving, the Board of Directors conducted a broad strategic review of alternatives and determined that entering into the Sale Agreement with Nexus, and initiating a court-supervised sale process, is the best path forward to maximize value and ensure continued operations," wrote Big Lots in the release.

Murfreesboro will be adding the city's first In-N-Out Burger from the popular California-based fast-food restaurant chain.

In-N-Out Burger Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick offered the following comments about the restaurant plans for Murfreesboro and Middle Tennessee in an email to The Daily News Journal.

"We’re currently in the construction phase for our location on Medical Center Parkway in Murfreesboro," Warnick said.

"It usually takes eight to nine months to build the restaurant and open it for business. Because of the amount of construction that still needs to occur, it’s still too early to identify a precise opening date."

The Murfreesboro In-N-Out Burger will be among the many restaurants the company expects to open in Tennessee. The business announced in January plans to open a three-story 100,000-square-foot territory office in Franklin to serve expansion operations on the eastern side of the United States. The chain expansion will create a workforce of 275 jobs, according to an article in The Tennessean.

"We are grateful for the support we’ve received from The Volunteer State and look forward to serving its communities," Warnick said.

In-N-Out Burger will be near many Murfreesboro restaurants

In-N-Out Burger will blend in with the many dining options that are part of the Clari Park development. Others include Drake's, Cava and Whataburger.

Clari Park includes plans for 300 apartments, a range of 182 to 282 townhouses, and Main Event entertainment business with bowling and other activities.

The busy Medical Center Parkway also offers many other restaurant options, including fast-food burger competitors with car lines, such as McDonald's and Culver's.

The Murfreesboro In-N-Out Burger should employ around 50 workers after opening, Warnick said.

"We’ll continue to hire as needed in the months that follow," Warnick said. "We usually begin accepting applications for our new locations four to six weeks before they are set to open. We recommend that those interested frequently check our website at www.in-n-out.com/employment for up-to-date information on open positions."

Former Californians tout In-N-Out Burger

Many former California residents who have moved to Murfreesboro and other Rutherford County communities are well familiar with In-N-Out Burger. Among those people who relocated from the West Coast state are Tim Thomson of the Smyrna area and Tiffany Johnson of the Murfreesboro area.

Thomson described In-N-Out Burger as a "five-star" restaurant that will have car lines similar to Chick-fil-A, only longer.

"It's amazing," Thomson said.

Johnson said she grew up in California enjoying the burgers, fries and shakes at In-N-Out Burger.

"I am glad to see In-N-Out coming to Middle Tennessee," said Johnson, a former chairwoman of the Rutherford County Board of Education. "They are a wonderful faith-based family friendly organization that will be great partners with our schools and community."

Trader Joe's will open its first store in Murfreesboro and seventh in Tennessee Thursday, spokeswoman Nakia Rohde said.

The chain's shoppers in Rutherford County will gain a shorter commute when the Trader Joe's opens at 2305 Medical Center Parkway by Robert Rose Drive and near The Avenue Murfreesboro shopping center.

"Moments before doors open at 8 am, there will be a brief ribbon cutting," Rohde told The Daily News Journal. "Store Captain Jeff Carter and Trader Joe’s Crew Members will be on hand to welcome customers to their new neighborhood store."

Trader Joe's is known for selling popular affordable products such as Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, Teeny Tiny Avocados, Everything But The Leftovers Seasoning Blend and Stir Fried Garlicky Cabbage.

The store will be a short drive from the Interstate 24 interchange with the busy Medical Center Parkway.

Trader Joe's seeks to hire local workforce

Rohde told The Daily News Journal recently that Trader Joe's Murfreesboro store would offer a starting pay range of $14 to $17 per hour.

"As a neighborhood grocery store, Trader Joe’s prides itself on hiring where our store is located," Rhode said. "The store has hired sixty-five new Crew Members from surrounding areas and transferred in others from neighboring Trader Joe’s stores."

The new Murfreesboro Trader Joe’s will donate 100% of products that go unsold but remain fit to enjoy to a range of nonprofit, community-based organizations, seven days a week, in following the company's longstanding Neighborhood Shares Program, Rhode said.

Trader Joe's will be operating a 9,400-square-foot specialty grocery store built by Murfreesboro-based TDK Construction and Development.

Trader Joe's has operations in East, Middle and West TN

Prior to the signage appearing for the future Trader Joe's, Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland confirmed to The Daily News Journal July 2024 that the construction project at Medical Center Parkway and Robert Rose Drive was for the popular grocery store chain.

"For months, we were saying specialty grocer, but this is where Trader Joe's is going to be located," McFarland said. "I think that's going to be a welcome addition to our community. A lot of people are really excited about it."

Other Tennessee locations

The new Trader Joe's in Murfreesboro will join six others in Tennessee.

The California-based Trader Joe's has two locations in Nashville and one in Franklin in Middle Tennessee; one each in Chattanooga and Knoxville in East Tennessee. And one in Germantown in West Tennessee, according to an internet search.
