If your tummy troubles you, head to Kate’s Ice Cream for an all-vegan menu with signature flavors like salted peanut butter brittle. Fresh fruit lovers must stop by Nico’s for a swirl of New Zealand-style ice cream mixes that blend fresh fruit from the Willamette Valley with creamy vanilla.

Led by local culinary maven Mika Paredes, Cornet Custard offers the richest, creamiest custard you’ll ever have, with all-fresh ingredients and 12 egg yolks a pint. Their scoops menu includes standouts like Vietnamese iced coffee and blood orange creamsicle. For a lighter frozen treat, try the frozen yogurt at Eb & Bean or the soft serve at Cheese & Crack – both deploy a fun selection of toppings and seasonal flavors.

Perfect for summer picnics and daytime dates, Ice Queen serves plant-based paletas in flavors like mangonada, an icy take on the classic mango and chamoy dessert. Drop by popular Cafe Maiko, Oregon’s only location in SE Portland for some of the best matcha soft serves, with seasonal flavors like ube and black sesame. For Vietnamese dessert lovers, Bambu has a menu full of chè, a sweet dessert soup often topped with pandan jelly, longan, coconut and shaved ice.

Chocolate and Candy

Portland’s chocolate and candy offerings feature gourmet craftsmanship and bold flavor, from single-origin bars to small-batch confections. Creo Chocolate offers a variety of truffles, handcrafted bars, and milk and dark chocolate-covered goodies like crystalized ginger and gummy bears—and don’t miss a true Portland chocolatier experience with the build-a-bar tour where visitors can take a behind-the-scenes look into Creo’s small factory and create their customized a dark chocolate bar. Hailing from Ecuador, chocolatiers at dreamy Cloudforest serve up delectable drinking chocolate and a healthy offering of tea, pastries, and their signature chocolate bars and assorted candies.

Ranger Chocolate is another shop offering chocolate snacks like granola and caramels, in addition to bars made from ethically sourced, organic ingredients. The bean-to-bar factory and shop at Woodblock Chocolate are a must-visit for a peek at how their single-origin bars are made. Located inside the Heathman Hotel, Azar Indulgence highlights Lebanese influence with truffles infused with pistachio, rosewater and cardamom flavors. Missionary Chocolates handmakes vegan truffles like Meyer lemon explosion or whiskey.

For visitors short on time, The Meadow is a one-stop shop with a selection of Portland-made chocolate bars and confections from many of the shops mentioned above, as well as their house-made bars, gourmet salts and other cooking goodies. I recommend picking up one of my favorite local candies, Tom Bumble, from Oregon Bark. It’s their take on a Butterfinger with flakey, sticky, pressed peanut butter flakes covered in chocolate.

Pies and Pastries

Dig into Portland’s abundance of pastry and pie options that celebrate classic desserts and inventive twists for something filling and robust. Two talented pastry chefs take the helm at JinJu Patisserie, a James Beard-nominated spot with tarts, cakes, and bonbons; their laminated pastries are a must-have — especially the chocolate croissant. Try the miso butterscotch sticky buns at Orange & Blossom or the seasonal Danish at Sweetpea Baking Co. — both shops are fully vegan and offer options for gluten-free travelers.

Ever need a sugar fix in the middle of the night? Try Portland’s only dessert vending machine, the Pix-O-Matic. Serving up sleek French pastries and cakes since 2001, the machine offers 24-hour access to sate your cravings with cake slices, macarons, petit fours and chocolates. Over on Hawthorne, Farina Bakery attracts hundreds of hungry visitors each day with handmade macarons, Marionberry pop tarts and generous portions of cake by the slice.

While An Xuyên is the perfect neighborhood spot to pick up a banh mi, you can also find a selection of pastries in their cold cases. Anytime I pop into An Xuyên for a banh mi, I also pick up one of their flaky Chinese red bean paste pastries. Stay on the sweet and savory train with Dos Hermanos, whose hearty chopped sandwiches shine alongside classics like conchas and coffee cakes. Don’t miss Portland’s pie shops, chock-full of sweet desserts with golden crusts and fillings that spotlight Pacific Northwest flavors and ingredients. Lauretta Jean’s slices up hearty pieces of pie with classics like heirloom apple or coconut cream. The Pie Spot offers cupcake-sized mini pies with flavors like Oregon’s unofficial berry, the Marionberry, or s’mores topped with toasted marshmallows. If you can’t get enough of s’mores at the Pie Spot, pop into the Toasted S’mores Bar. Co-founded by Nico Vergara of Nico’s Ice Cream, this niche dessert bar brews fireside nostalgia featuring cinnamon graham crackers from Dos Hermanos.

Travelers named Portland International Airport (PDX) the best airport in the United States in Travel + Leisure’s survey in 2021, as well as every year from 2013–2019. Why do they love PDX? An easy light rail connection to downtown, free Wi-Fi, great local food and drink (including microbrews, craft spirits and even food carts), and tax-free shopping without markups are just a few of the reasons. That’s not to mention the superior guest experience travelers report having whenever they pass through the Portland airport.

Know Before You Go

While a majority of the airport’s major renovation was completed in 2024, the remainder is currently underway with an expected completion date in early 2026. See the website for more information and note that you may encounter modified routes and construction in progress.

In August 2024, PDX unveiled a massive renovation that “set a new high bar for airport design,” according to Fast Company magazine. Featuring streams of natural light, more than 70 live trees, the return of the iconic PDX carpet, a stunning Northwest-sourced timber lattice ceiling, and multiple 120-foot-long video walls, the project is a stunning sight to behold.

Air Service

Portland International Airport (PDX) is currently served by more than 15 international and domestic airlines offering about 500 scheduled passenger arrivals and departures daily. More than 60 U.S. cities offer nonstop flights to Portland, including Atlanta, Orlando, New York, Boston and Chicago. Internationally, you can fly direct to PDX from Amsterdam, Calgary, Frankfurt, Guadalajara, London, Puerto Vallarta, Toronto and Vancouver, British Columbia. PDX offers more than 60 nonstop flights to cities near and far, including international destinations.

Getting To and From the Airport

The Portland airport is located 9 miles (14.5 km) northeast of downtown and is conveniently connected to the city center via MAX Light Rail.

The MAX Light Rail Red Line is the easiest way to travel to and from the airport. Here are some quick facts:

On average, the one-way trip from PDX to downtown Portland takes 20–40 minutes by car. The taxi fare is about $50 before gratuity (note that this can vary widely depending on traffic and time of day). Uber and Lyft both offer drop-off and pick-up services at Portland International Airport as well, with in-app fare estimators available before booking.

Taxis, Ubers and Lyfts are waiting inside Level 1 of the Short-Term Parking garage. To return to the airport from the city center, you can order a cab through the city’s main operators or from a hotel with a dedicated taxi stand.

When you leave the airport, you will find the shuttles at the bottom entrance of the terminal (outside the baggage claim area) on the other side of the second strip (“Island 2”) near the parking garage. Many airport hotels offer free services.

For a VIP travel experience, several highly rated private car options are available, including Marquee Chauffer, Portland Luxury Town Car, and Delta Town Car.

Portland Food Tours by Foot

Covering downtown Portland and beyond, the food-focused routes of Forktown Food Tours explore several different neighborhoods, making seven stops along the way at food carts, restaurants and kitchens.

Portland By Mouth offers culinary walking tours in several of Portland’s eastside neighborhoods, including Mississippi, with five or six stops on each tour.

Lost Plate PDX offers a morning tour featuring coffee and doughnuts as well as an afternoon tour of food cart pods and patios and a weekend tour that includes 10+ Oregon wines paired with small bites.

Around Portland Tours showcases Portland’s thriving food cart scene with its Food Carts of Portland bike tour. The 6–10 mile ride pairs well with delicious food samples over the 3.5–4-hour tour.

Cycle Portland’s Foodie Field Trip encourages you to arrive hungry for the 7–9 mile ride that includes coffee, entrée, beverage and ice cream.

Food Tours Outside of Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. — SeaPort Airlines is returning to Pacific Northwest skies — but with a new leadership team, a tighter business model, and a sharper focus on connecting Portland and Seattle.

Starting May 20, the revived commuter airline will offer up to 24 daily flights between Portland International Airport (PDX) and Boeing Field in Seattle, with flights scheduled every 45 minutes during peak travel times. Travelers will skip TSA screening, park close to the terminal, and board from a small private facility on the Atlantic Aviation campus adjacent to PDX's main terminal. Flights land at King County International Airport — commonly known as Boeing Field — which is located just minutes from downtown Seattle.

The new service aims to solve a familiar regional headache: long travel times between Oregon and Washington's biggest cities, whether on the clogged I-5 corridor or through the overburdened Sea-Tac International Airport.

"It's 2025, and yet the two major cities in the Pacific Northwest have never been further apart, more difficult to travel between," said Kent Craford, Chairman and CEO of Kalinin Holdings, the parent company of the newly relaunched SeaPort Airlines.

SeaPort Airlines originally launched in 2008 with a similar goal: connect Portland and Seattle quickly and efficiently using small aircraft. But Craford, who co-founded the company, left after just a year due to a dispute with a primary investor. Following his departure, the airline shifted its business strategy away from high-demand commuter routes and instead chased federally subsidized "Essential Air Service" contracts to serve rural areas.

It was a move Craford believes doomed the airline.

"They went into rural subsidy markets, which are notoriously difficult to serve, notoriously unprofitable," he said. "That's what they found out the hard way."

By 2016, the original SeaPort Airlines filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and ceased operations.

Now nearly a decade later, Craford is back in charge — this time bringing experience from running Alaska Seaplanes, a successful regional airline based in Juneau that he and his partners acquired in 2011. That company now operates two dozen aircraft in Southeast Alaska's rugged terrain and employs more than 300 people.

"We saw it as an opportunity to try and do it again — but our way. The right way," Craford said.

The new SeaPort Airlines will use a fleet of Swiss-built Pilatus PC-12 aircraft — high-performance, pressurized turboprops that seat nine passengers. Because the planes fall below TSA thresholds, passengers will not have to go through standard security screening. That means travelers can arrive as little as 20 minutes before departure, walk through the private terminal, and board directly.

"With flights every 45 minutes, it's really effectively a conveyor belt magic carpet in the sky, just going back and forth," Craford said. "If you miss one flight, hop on the next."

Flights start at $279 one-way, though prices will vary based on timing and availability under a dynamic pricing model.

Craford says the airline's focus is squarely on one route — Portland to Seattle — and serving it with the speed, predictability and frequency of a shuttle service. If demand grows, the company could eventually expand to flights every 15 minutes.

One of the main selling points of the service is the ability for business travelers to make same-day roundtrips — heading to Seattle in the morning, attending meetings, and returning home in time for dinner.

"It's really going to be a gamechanger for folks that go back and forth to Seattle," Craford said. "You don't need to drive, and you don't need to stay overnight."

Local leaders also welcomed the return of SeaPort, seeing it as a smart transportation solution for a region that has long needed faster alternatives.

"More than just a new flight route, this is an investment in the infrastructure that keeps our region connected and competitive," said Andrew Hoan, president and CEO of the Portland Metro Chamber. "By delivering a smarter, faster travel option, SeaPort is advancing innovation, accessibility and opportunity for Portlanders and the broader Pacific Northwest."

Chris Czarnecki, director of aviation business and properties at the Port of Portland, added: "With the relaunch of flights to Boeing Field, we're adding an airport to our map and giving travelers a new option to reach Portland."

Flights can be booked now at www.flyseaportair.com. SeaPort is also offering flight packages for business customers and frequent travelers. The airline's leadership said additional routes could be considered in the future, but for now, all eyes are on making the Portland–Seattle corridor work.

"This is about giving people their time back," Craford said. "You get up, fly out, take care of your business, and get home for dinner. That's the promise — and we're here to deliver on it."
