BAM Broadband’s fiber network expansion in Highlands Ranch, Colorado will continue through 2025, reaching thousands of additional homes, businesses, and multi-dwelling units (MDUs).

The project, which began in 2024, is part of BAM’s larger expansion efforts in Arizona and Colorado, the ISP’s March 30 announcement stated.

Currently, BAM is undertaking additional builds in Scottsdale and metro areas south of Denver, according to BAM’s release.

The company has also recently introduced a “Price Lock Guarantee” program on plans exceeding 1.2 gigabits per second.

“This guarantee reinforces the company’s commitment to transparent pricing, ensuring that customers enjoy reliable, high-speed internet without the worry of hidden fees and continuing price hikes in the future,” the ISP’s announcement said.

Jack Koo, the CEO of BAM Broadband, said BAM is additionally now “the only provider in our markets offering symmetrical 8.5 (gigabits per second) speeds.”

“As with every community we serve, our commitment to Highlands Ranch goes beyond simply being an internet service provider,” said Donald Ray, an SVP with BAM. “We’re here to be the opposite of the cable company – offering fast, reliable internet service without endless cycles of price hikes, service interruptions and poor customer support.”

According to Ray, when customers interact with BAM teams, they’re interacting with staff that work and live locally.

“We’re not here to just deliver fast internet – we’re also here to build meaningful community partnerships that drive growth and innovation in the communities we serve,” he said.

Highlands Ranch, located in Douglas County, has a population of over 100,000, according to recent census data.

A new and inexpensive way for people to travel around Highlands Ranch will launch later this spring.

Aiming to build on the success of Lone Tree’s Link on Demand service, the Board of Douglas County Commissioners approved a $2.9 million contract with Via Transportation Inc., for microtransit services in Highlands Ranch.

“When it’s too far to walk and it’s really not far enough to drive their own vehicles, I think this is the way forward,” said Commissioner George Teal.

In Highlands Ranch, Via, which is the service provider of microtransit in Lone Tree, plans to have up to 15 vehicles available each day during peak hours, including ADA accessible vehicles. There will also be a call center for multilingual customer service.

As the county anticipates 2,200 to 2,400 rides per week, the proposed operating hours mirror Lone Tree. Hours would be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays.

“Via will provide microtransit service throughout all of Highlands Ranch with points into and out of Lone Tree,” said Ryan Author, Douglas County community programs coordinator.

For example, connections can be made to commercial areas along Highlands Ranch Parkway, County Line Road and the Park Meadows Retail Resort. The rides can also connect people to parks, recreation centers, local hospitals, medical centers, RTD bus stations, and the County Line and Littleton/Mineral light rail stations.

County Commissioner Abe Laydon added that it’s also a safety solution.

“It’s a safe ride for people that may not be in a condition to drive, (it’s) for them to be able to get into a rideshare and go throughout the county safely,” Laydon said.

To use the service, Highlands Ranch residents can download the Link on Demand mobile app and when the service is launched, they can use the app to book a ride.

A decade of service in Lone Tree

Last fall, elected officials from Douglas County attended the 10th anniversary celebration of Link on Demand in Lone Tree, and they learned more about its services and community impact.

Lone Tree’s Link on Demand started out as a shuttle service to connect riders to and from the County Line and Lincoln light rail stations. But over the years, it grew into a free, on-demand service that utilizes four full-time vehicles, and one backup vehicle during peak hours, to transport people throughout the city.

From 2023 to 2024, the ridership increased by 77%, according to the city, and in August 2024 alone, there were more than 6,000 rides.

The city also heard from riders who said that the service saves them money, and because of having the service available to them, they tend to travel around the city more.

What the county is hearing

Knowing that many residents across Douglas County utilize rideshare services like Uber and Lyft, and other transportation methods like bikes and RTD, the county has been conducting an integrated transit and multimodal study.

The Denver Regional Council of Governments gave $2.5 million to Douglas County for the study and pilot programs, and the commissioners previously budgeted $3 million in the Capital Improvement Plan funds for these types of services in the county.

Through various focus groups with people who represented a diverse population, the county learned that common priorities include the desire for free or low cost transit, frequency, connectivity and ease of use.

The ongoing study has found so far that about 67% of daily trips made in the county occur within the county, while approximately 33% extend beyond the county. This led the county to believe that local transit could assist commuters, and potentially alleviate local traffic.

Additionally, when looking at how people commute to and from work, about 6% use public transit or carpool and nearly 67% drive alone.

“One thing we know for sure is that the citizens of our community are not getting the return on investment for RTD dollars,” said Laydon. “People are not riding the bus, people really do not ride the light rail.”

While there are multiple hourly bus stops throughout Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree, as well as light rail stations, the commissioners believe that a microtransit service would be more expansive and would be more readily available for residents.

They also hope to expand the service to communities such as Castle Rock and Parker.

“I think the hope might be to expand this service, if it’s successful, to those municipalities if they have interest and some willingness to partner,” said Laydon.

Whether it’s recovering from an injury or surgery, or treating an illness, a stay at the hospital can become draining and often repetitive. But it’s the moments that patients have with visitors that brings smiles to their faces and uplifts their spirits.

For Paul Nelson, who is a frequent patient at UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital, having a visitor always brightens his day.

“It gets pretty boring sitting here in the hospital,” Nelson said.

However, a mid-April hospital visitor is one that Nelson is going to remember – and for a good reason. He was one of many patients to sit down and chat with Michael Toglia, a first baseman for the Colorado Rockies.

Baseball is a generational love in Nelson’s family. Not only did he take part in creating the random “booms” and “crash” sound effects used at baseball games across the country, his grandson, who plays for Mountain Vista High School, is a baseball fanatic.

Nelson quickly grabbed his phone to capture the moment that Toglia, sitting about a foot away, signed a baseball for him.

“I like baseball – it’s America’s pastime,” said Nelson. “My grandson is very excited.”

Oftentimes, patients at the UCHealth Anschutz campus in Aurora have the opportunity to meet their favorite athletes, but this spring, some of that same love got shared with the patients at the UCHealth Highlands Ranch hospital.

Toglia was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 2019 and made his debut with the team in 2022 as a switch-hitter.

This was not his first time visiting with patients since he made his Major League Baseball debut. Last year, Toglia and his fiancee, Jenna, took time to be with patients at the Infusion Center at UCHealth Anschutz campus.

“There’s no reason not to (come back),” said Toglia. “They couldn’t wait to share stuff about their grandchildren and their baseball interests, and so it was really easy to talk with them.”

As he went room to room, Toglia and the patients shared all kinds of stories with one another – one being why Toglia has the number four on his Colorado Rockies jersey.

Toglia told a patient that his father is a New York Yankees fan and that one favorite player’s was number seven, Mickey Mantle. That number was already taken, so he went with another of his father’s favorites, Lou Gehrig, number four.

Toglia and another patient began talking about some of the original Colorado Rockies players when the patient mentioned that he was at the first game played on Coors Field in the spring of 1995.

One of the most memorable patients was 99-year-old Mary Bushman. The two spoke about hockey, history, Japanese culture and dogs. Bushman was taken aback when Toglia signed a baseball for her.

“I’ll show everybody,” Bushman said about her signed baseball.

It was a surreal day for Mark Gill, a patient and avid Colorado Rockies fan, who was able to shake hands with the athlete he has been watching on the field and screen for years.

“I’ve been following him ever since he came into the majors,” said Gill. “Being a left-handed first baseman is what you look for as a professional and so he’s got the talent.”

Gill has been playing baseball since high school and has played in a few of the Colorado Rockies fantasy camps. Together, they talked about the team’s slow start to the season, game play, player statistics and about some of the prospects.

“It’s always uplifting when somebody like that comes in and meets you and wants to talk to you,” said Gill. “(It) gets people in a good mood.”

While the patients had an unforgettable day, Toglia said that it was a refreshing experience to meet one-on-one with some of his fans and hear about their life stories.

“It’s easy to get kind of trapped in this narrow tunnel vision that’s just baseball,” said Toglia. “Then you come to a place like this and you realize that there’s just so many people out there with different life experiences and interests – that it’s not just about baseball.”

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — The Douglas County School District Board of Education unanimously voted on Tuesday to consolidate six Highlands Ranch elementary schools.

Under the plan, Saddle Ranch Elementary will consolidate into Eldorado Elementary, Heritage Elementary will consolidate into Summit View Elementary, and Acres Green Elementary will consolidate into Fox Creek Elementary.

The consolidation will begin with the 2026-27 school year.

Prior to the vote, several board members said it was one of the most difficult decisions they've faced during their tenure.

"From the superintendent down… I’ve literally spoken to custodians, and they’ve all had opinions, and they’ve all mattered, and they’ve all been considered," said DCSD Board of Education member Brad Geiger.

"I have a lot of hope that this is going to make better opportunities for our students and our families, and I will work to make sure we’re able to live up to the promises that have been made," said fellow school board member Susan Meek.

Following the vote, DCSD issued a release, saying the decision came "after nearly two years of careful planning and evaluation" in order to address declining enrollment in Highlands Ranch. The schools were selected based on criteria outlined in this district policy.

Several parents attended the meeting, hoping to sway the board from its final decision.

"Losing the vibrance of children playing outside and a community gathering place is going to be a profound loss for us," said Cali Wolf, a Heritage Elementary parent.

Other Heritage Elementary School parents expressed concerns about class sizes ahead of Tuesday's vote.

"We’ve been told there’s 22 classrooms at Summit View and there’s 22 classrooms at Heritage, yet we’re going to have more students at Summit View," said Katie Bibler. "It’s all about lack of trust."

DCSD said Eldorado, Summit View and Fox Creek will receive "any necessary building improvements" ahead of the consolidations. The district said it also plans to continue maintenance at Saddle Ranch, Heritage and Acres Green so the playgrounds, fields, and other spaces are available for community use. DCSD said the three closing schools will house district programming, which will be determined next school year.

The school board said Tuesday that the closed schools will be used as bus stops following the consolidation.

The school board and district officials cited unequal growth in Douglas County as the reason for the consolidation. According to Geiger, communities like Sterling Ranch are booming as families with young children move to areas other than Highlands Ranch.

Data from DCSD shows 10,484 students were enrolled across Highlands Ranch's 18 elementary schools in 2014, but in 2028, that number is expected to plummet to 6,476 students across the schools.

In addition to the consolidation, the school board on Tuesday approved changes to the way the district classifies Highlands Ranch sixth graders.

Sixth grade will be moved to middle school beginning in the 2026-27 school year. This will only affect Highlands Ranch elementary schools that feed into Cresthill, Mountain Ridge and Ranch View middle schools. However, in a previous release, the school district said it is looking to create a timeline for moving sixth graders throughout the district to middle school.

The district is also making "minor elementary school boundary adjustments," which will take effect ahead of the 2026-27 school year.
