Rain showers arrived for some in Colorado late Monday evening, but the heavy precipitation is now settling in across the state and will continue all afternoon.

Several factors are at play in the low-pressure system bringing this precipitation, but because of its more southerly track, forecast rainfall totals have decreased slightly on Tuesday.

Tuesday is another First Alert Weather Day because of the impacts this slow-moving storm system will bring.

We are still expecting widespread soaking rain across the I-25 corridor, extending into the plains, but totals for the Denver metro have dropped slightly.

This heavy rain could lead to ponding and some isolated flooding this afternoon as rain builds.

While rain falls, heavily at times, in the lower elevations, the high country is bracing for the potential for more than 1 ft of snow in some areas.

Most of the Denver metro area is expecting .5" to 1" of rain, with higher totals toward the foothills and in the west metro.

More rain will fall in southern Colorado, where totals could exceed 3 inches.

Snow will pile up this afternoon in the mountains, dropping to 8000 ft. throughout the day. More than 10-20 inches is expected over our highest elevations, with sharper gradients of snowfall as elevations drop.

Heavier rain turns to showers late Tuesday night and overnight.

By Wednesday, off-and-on showers and isolated storms will continue as this system clears out of the area.

A Weather Impact Alert is issued Tuesday for heavy Front Range rain and mountain snow, with big snow totals likely in Colorado's high country.

DENVER — After a slow start in the Denver metro area, a big spring storm is bringing widespread soaking rain to the Front Range and plains, and significant snow to the mountains.

The 9NEWS Weather Impact Team has issued a Weather Impact Alert for Tuesday. Avoid driving to the mountains if possible on Tuesday night, due to heavy snowfall.

The storm is tracking farther south than initially anticipated, so the heavier rain and snow is falling across southern Colorado.

Earlier Tuesday, the wind shifted to become easterly, and rain increased along the Front Range and the Interstate 25 corridor. The rain will taper off late Tuesday and early Wednesday morning.

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for the Colorado mountains for Tuesday and Wednesday, along with Winter Weather Advisories in the foothills west of Denver.

Snow will be heaviest Tuesday night near the mountain passes, and travel conditions could go downhill in a hurry as temperatures drop.

The 9NEWS Weather Impact Team trimmed its forecast for rain and snow totals owing to moisture in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles getting in the way of some of the storm's precipitation; however, this will still be a solid rain and snow event.

Look for a half-inch to an inch of rain across most of the Denver metro area and 4 to 12 inches of heavy, wet snow in the foothills, with 1 to 2 feet of snow in the mountains.

Warmer and drier weather will make a return to the state starting Thursday.

As we warm up, there will be enough low-level moisture hanging around to produce isolated afternoon showers and storms in the mountains as we approach the upcoming weekend.

Heavy, widespread rain will continue in Denver as Colorado’s higher elevations will see snow accumulations up to 20 inches through Wednesday as a strong spring storm system pushes through the state.

DENVER — Periods of heavy, widespread rain will continue in Denver and across the I-25 corridor through the day Tuesday as Colorado’s higher elevations will see snow accumulations up to 20 inches through Wednesday as a strong spring storm system pushes through the state.

“It’s definitely the coolest day of the week and the soggiest. We’ll see wet roads for the evening commute Tuesday with a rain-snow mix possible for the Palmer Divide tonight,” said Denver7 chief meteorologist Lisa Hidalgo. “You may see some slushier conditions especially west of the metro and up into the mountains where over the next couple of days we’ll see heavier snow totals.”

The threat of flooding is low in Denver, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Boulder as heavy snow could make for difficult travel conditions in the high country.

“From 10 to 20 inches of snow is expected over the higher east slopes, including I-70 in Clear Creek county and Berthoud and Kenosha Passes,” wrote NWS forecasters.

Winter storm warnings and a winter weather advisory are in effect across Colorado’s mountains and foothills.

Portions of Jackson, Larimer, Grand, Boulder, Gilpin, Clear Creek, Summit and Park Counties above 9,000 feet are under the winter storm warning until 6 a.m. Wednesday where between 10 and 20 inches of snow could pile up, said the NWS.

“Travel could be very difficult by late this afternoon and evening, including I-70 east of the Eisenhower Tunnel, the Peak to Peak Highway, US40 over Berthoud Pass, and Highway 14 over and east of Cameron Pass. The hazardous conditions will impact the late Tuesday morning and Tuesday evening commutes,” added the NWS.

A winter weather advisory is also in effect for the Northern and Southern Front Range Foothills where snow totals could reach 10 inches above 8,000 feet and less accumulation at lower elevations to 7,000 feet, according to the NWS.

Red Feather Lakes, Georgetown, Idaho Springs, Estes Park, Bailey and Nederland are included in the winter weather advisory which is in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Across Denver metro communities, between .5” and 1.5” of rain is expected through Wednesday morning with amounts gradually decreasing through Colorado’s northeastern plains.

“In Denver, expect to see some soaking showers through tonight and we’ll gradually see the rain taper off by Wednesday morning with lingering scattered showers and thunderstorms through the afternoon but not nearly as heavy Wednesday afternoon as we’ll see Tuesday,” said Hidalgo.

As for Denver’s temperature forecast, Tuesday’s afternoon high will struggle to reach 50 degrees and on Wednesday, the temp is expected to only warm to around 57 degrees.

By Thursday, temperatures will begin to rebound through the early part of next week with plenty of sunshine expected. Thursday’s high temp in Denver will warm to 70 degrees with mostly sunny skies with calm conditions and a high of 75 degrees on Friday.

This weekend in Denver, temps really begin to soar – reaching the upper 70s on Saturday with a few afternoon scattered storms before reaching 80 degrees on Sunday.

Looking ahead at Colorado’s 10-day forecast, Hidalgo said the state is just on the edge of wetter-than-average conditions and it looks to dry out in Denver for a bit after this storm pushes through as warmer-than-average temperatures area expected to settle into Denver and across Colorado.

How Denver's snow season looks this year

April in Denver was the 12th driest on record. According to NWS stats, the city's official gauge only received 2.2” of snow, which is 4 inches below normal. Denver’ only saw a half inch of rain, which was 1.18” below normal.

Looking at the snow totals this season in Denver, as of April, the season's cumulative total is down 7.2" from normal. At this point, Denver's snow gauge should be at around 54.9" for the season with the 2024-25 total coming in at 47.7.

Denver's monthly snowfall total for the month of May is only 1.7".

The greatest alpine skier of all time is stepping onto the soccer field, as an owner. Colorado’s own Mikaela Shiffrin is joining the ownership group of the National Women’s Soccer League’s Denver expansion team, the team announced Tuesday.

With 101 World Cup victories, two Olympic gold medals and eight world championship titles, Shiffrin is widely considered the most decorated alpine skier in history. Born and raised in Vail, she started competing on the World Cup circuit at age 16.

Shiffrin is the only athlete to win all six of the World Cup disciplines: slalom, giant slalom, super-G, downhill, combination and parallel combination. In 2023, she won the annual ESPN award as the best athlete in women’s sports and was one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.

The skier joins an ownership group led by Rob Cohen, CEO of Denver’s IMA Financial Group, and Ariel Investments Co-CEO Melody Hobson through Project Level — Ariel’s fund dedicated to investment in women’s sports. The Colorado Sun asked NWSL Denver what percentage of the team Shiffrin would own. They declined to provide the information.

“The sport culture in Colorado is rich and deep, and — most notably — the growth of women’s sports is one of the most exciting movements in our culture today,” Shiffrin said in a statement. “To be part of it, and to help bring professional women’s soccer to Colorado, is not only an incredible investment opportunity — but it is both an honor and a joy.”

Denver was announced as the 16th NWSL team in January. Their $110 million expansion fee is the most expensive in U.S. women’s sports history. Since then, the team has been rapidly preparing for its 2026 season debut. In April, the team announced Jen Millet as its first president. Millet has served as chief operating officer of Bay FC and previously worked for the Golden State Warriors, StubHub and Pandora.

In April, the team surpassed 10,000 season ticket deposits. They are partnering with the Cherry Creek School District to build a temporary venue in Centennial for their first two seasons. A 20,000-square-foot, purpose-built training facility will also be located on the same property.

The ownership group and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston are asking the City Council to approve $70 million in public funding to help build a stadium at Interstate 25 and Broadway at the Sante Fe Yards. The total cost would range from $150 million-$200 million and be built by the team.

That request passed its first hurdle late last month, but has not yet reached the full council. If the money is not approved, Cohen has hinted that the team might leave Denver.

Nathan MacKinnon was not alone with his thoughts Saturday night.

The Colorado Avalanche had just been stunned by Mikko Rantanen and the Dallas Stars. MacKinnon and his teammates were 13 minutes from the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Now, there are 22 weeks until opening night.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do,” MacKinnon said.

“Now what?” is the feeling of the moment for the Avalanche. Last season, the Avs built a roster capable of winning the Stanley Cup, but Valeri Nichushkin’s suspension ended any hope of that.

This season, general manager Chris MacFarland undertook the most ambitious in-season remodel of a Cup contender in league history. The Avs even got captain Gabe Landeskog back. It still didn’t work.

Here are the biggest questions of what will be a long offseason for the Avalanche:

1. Will there be front office or coaching changes?

When a Stanley Cup-winning core remains very much in the prime of its contention window, everything could be on the table after a third consecutive playoff disappointment. The Avs were 13 minutes from the second round, and MacFarland likely becomes a finalist for the NHL’s GM of the year award without the Game 7 collapse.

Jared Bednar has two years left on his contract, and there are seven other NHL openings out there. Replacing him would be about a different voice, not upgrading at the position. Because there isn’t a better coach available, and plenty of competition for the ones that are.

2. Who will be the No. 2 center?

Brock Nelson is the Avs’ biggest free agent, and one of the top 3-5 in the league. The salary cap ceiling will increase to $95.5 million next season. Colorado is currently at $86.8 million, with 11 forwards, five defensemen and two goalies under contract.

The Avs have enough space to make a Nelson contract work and the ability to create a little more flexibility, if needed. Will they be willing to meet his demands? It’s no secret that his hometown Minnesota Wild will be very interested in making a pitch if he reaches the market.

What are the other options if he doesn’t sign? The other top potential free agents are Sam Bennett, who will likely cost more than Nelson, and John Tavares, who is a year older but coming off a better season.

It’s entirely possible that Charlie Coyle will be the No. 2 center on opening night if Nelson doesn’t sign, and then the Avs may be in the market for one at the deadline yet again.

3. What is the plan for Gabe Landeskog?

Landeskog played in seven games this season — five with the Avs, two with the Eagles. He was one of Colorado’s best players. It’s an incredible story. Now … is Landeskog good to go next season without any restrictions? Will he get more games in with Sweden, because the world championships are in his hometown?

If Landeskog can play as well as he did in the playoffs moving forward, the Avs will still have one of the best forward groups/offenses in the NHL next season, with or without Nelson.

4. Does Jonathan Drouin get a third contract?

Drouin was the incredible story last year. This year was a lot tougher for him. Injuries really cost him. He was a non-factor by the end of the Dallas series. What kind of market will there be for him if he reaches July 1? It’s hard to see him returning to the Avs on a heftier contract, but something close to what he was making this year ($2.5 million) could work.

5. Will the Avs trade someone under contract?

Colorado could just re-sign Nelson, Drouin or add a middle-six forward, sign a third-pairing defenseman and call it a summer. But, there could be an avenue to more flexibility and the possibility a better option at one of those two spots if the Avs trade someone off the current roster.

Two potential options are Miles Wood, whose difficult season and four years left at $2.5 million each could be a hard sell for other clubs, or Ross Colton, who has two years left at $4 million per and a no-trade clause. A real shake-up move would be something involving the next guy on this list …

6. Will Martin Necas sign an extension this summer?

Necas has one year left at $6.5 million. After 27 goals and 83 points this year, his next contract is going to include a raise. How much of one is unclear, as is whether his agent and the Avs can find the right number this offseason.

As we just alluded to, if the Avs feel like a real jolt to the roster is needed, Necas likely has the highest trade value of any player who isn’t untouchable (MacKinnon, Cale Makar and Devon Toews).

What happens next with Necas is going to become part of the long-term tale of the tape on the Rantanen trade.

7. Who fills the last spot on defense?

Makar, Toews, Samuel Girard, Josh Manson and Sam Malinski are 5/6 of a strong defense corps. Ryan Lindgren and Erik Johnson are free agents. Lindgren might be out of Colorado’s price range, just like Sean Walker was a year ago. Johnson is more of a 7/8 guy at this point, and the Avs would likely welcome him back on a one-year deal.

What type of defenseman the Avs can shop for is tied to whether or not Nelson returns, or what the plan becomes at that position. This is another spot where the Avs could start the year with one plan, but have an eye toward an upgrade ahead of the deadline.

8. Will either of the top two prospects arrive?

Defenseman Mikhail Gulyayev and goaltender Ilya Nabokov are the club’s top two prospects. Could Gulyayev be the missing defenseman? Would Nabokov sign knowing he’ll spend one year as the No. 3 and then take over for Scott Wedgewood after next season?

9. Will anyone from the Eagles find a regular role?

It doesn’t look like the Avs need reinforcements up front right now, but another step forward for Ivan Ivan or Nikita Prishchepov would make it easier for Colorado to move on from someone above them to free up cap space. Next season also might be Oskar Olausson’s last chance to prove he’s an NHL player for the Avs.

10. How will this offseason affect Cale Makar’s next contract?

Mitch Marner is the biggest name left in the free-agent class this year and could reset the market for wings. But the bigger deal is the Class of 2026, and who signs a year early. Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Kirill Kaprizov could all sign massive deals. And that could alter what the market looks like for the Class of 2027. Makar and Quinn Hughes, the two best defensemen on the planet, are part of that group.
