The Fresno area is home to 11 of the best elementary schools in California, according to state educators.

The California Department of Education recently recognized a total of 336 elementary schools across the state as part of its 2025 California Distinguished Schools Program, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced on Tuesday, March 25.

Created in 1985, the Distinguished Schools program recognizes two types of “exceptional schools” — schools that are “closing the achievement gap” and those that demonstrate “exceptional student performance,” the state education department said in a news release.

It’s one of California’s “most important ways to celebrate exceptional schools, districts, teachers and classified employees for their innovation, talent and success in supporting students, the release said.

The 2025 Distinguished Schools recipients will be formally recognized at a special ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on May 30, the release said.

Here’s which local schools made the list:

In Fresno County, a total of six elementary schools earned California Distinguished Schools honors in 2025.

“Excellent elementary schools play a critical role in the life outcomes of our young people,” Thurmond said in the release, praising the “hard work of our elementary educators and school staff who help our students discover passions and experiences that will propel them.”

Two Clovis Unified School District campuses — Copper Hills Elementary School in Fresno and Woods Elementary School in Clovis — made the list.

Madison Elementary School in Fresno, part of Central Unified School District, was honored along with another Fresno school, Mayfair Elementary School, which belongs to Fresno Unified School District.

The state education department also awarded Distinguished Schools honors to Goldenrod Elementary School in Kerman, part of Kerman Unified School District, and Lincoln Elementary School in Reedley, part of Kings Canyon Joint Unified School District.

“As one of only six schools in all of Fresno County, this is a huge honor and a great reflection of all the hard work and dedication shown by students, families and staff,” Kings Canyon Joint Unified School District representatives wrote in an Instagram post. “Keep up the great work, Panthers!⁠”

On its website, Copper Hills Elementary said it works to “provide a safe, nurturing environment with high standards that will empower students with critical thinking skills and a foundation to be lifelong learners.”

The California Department of Education gave Distinguished Schools honors to a total of five Tulare County elementary schools in 2025.

Those included Golden Valley Elementary School in Orosi, part of Cutler-Orosi Joint Unified School District, and Roosevelt Elementary School in Dinuba, which belongs to Dinuba Unified School District.

Also honored was Rocky Hill Elementary School in Exeter, part of Exeter Unified School District.

The state education department also named Three Rivers Elementary School, part of Three Rivers Union Elementary District, and Mountain View Elementary School in Visalia, part of Visalia Unified District, as Distinguished Schools.

Roosevelt Elementary is “dedicated to ensuring the academic success of every student and providing a safe and productive learning experience,” the school said on its website.

To identify California Distinguished Schools recipients in 2025, the California Department of Education said it used multiple measures.

Schools were selected by analyzing data reported through the California School Dashboard, with a focus on demonstrating excellence and growth in academic achievement and ensuring a positive school climate.

When it comes to work, Fresno is among the most laid-back cities in the United States, according to WalletHub.

The personal finance website recently released its 2025 list of the Hardest-Working Cities in America, ranking 116 large cities based on average work weeks, commute lengths, employment rates, and other measurements.

In the United States, workers clock an average of about 34.1 hours per week, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“While working long hours, minimizing time off and having side jobs all lead to increased productivity, they can also have negative effects on people’s physical and mental health,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said in a Feb. 25 article. “It’s important for people to figure out how to work hard without overworking.”

Fresno was No. 108 on WalletHub’s list of the hardest-working large cities in the nation with an overall score of 50.2 out of 100, trailing far behind San Francisco and other California cities.

Fresno is the fifth largest city in California in terms of population, with 545,716 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The city has a labor force of 232,820 people with an unemployment rate of 8.6%, according to the California Employment Development Department.

On average, Fresno residents work 37.8 hours per work week, and spend 22.3 minutes commuting to their jobs.

About 4.4% of Fresno residents hold multiple jobs, compared to 5.3% of U.S. residents.

Meanwhile, 25.9% of Fresno households have no working adults.

On average, Fresno residents spend 5.68 hours per day doing sports and leisure activities, above the national average of five hours per day.

A total of 13 California cities landed on WalletHub’s list, with San Francisco landing at No. 9, the highest of any Golden State city.

Other California cities ranked higher than Fresno on WalletHub’s list, with Sacramento landing at No. 100, Bakersfield at No. 103, Stockton at No. 104 and San Bernardino at No. 105.

Rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to hit the Fresno area as storms sweep much of California, according to the National Weather Service.

“There is a pretty significant storm that’s going to move in late (Wednesday), and it’s looking like we’re going to get a period of moderate rain in the Fresno area,” said David Spector, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Hanford.

The storm could bring at least half an inch of rain to the Valley, the weather service on an X post.

The last time Fresno saw any measurable rain was on Thursday, March 6, when 1.5 inches fell in the Central Valley city, the weather service said.

Here’s what to know:

On Tuesday, the Fresno area was expected to be mostly sunny, with a high temperature near 68 degrees and calm winds around 5 mph, according to the weather service’s latest seven-day forecast.

The weather service predicted a low temperature of 48 degrees on Wednesday night.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, “We’re going to have slightly above-normal temperatures, but they’re going to plunge behind the storm on Thursday,” Spector said.

Showers will start on Wednesday after 11 a.m., according to the forecast.

There is a 40% chance of rain on Wednesday, which will be mostly cloudy with a high near 65 and wind gusts as high as 20 mph.

The chance of precipitation jumps to 100% on Wednesday night, when a low around 45 is expected.

“New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch (are) possible,” the weather service said in its forecast.

On Thursday, there is a chance of rain before 11 a.m. with a thunderstorm possible after that point. Winds could gust as high as 15 mph.

“There is a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening,” Spector said.

Fresno could get a 10th to a quarter of an inch of new rainfall, with “higher amounts possible in thunderstorms,” the weather service said.

Thursday will have a high near 56 and an overnight low around 40.

Friday is also expected to see some rain, with a high near 52.

Remnants of a shower could sprinkle Fresno on Friday night. Otherwise, skies will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 41.

“Thursday and Friday will be much cooler than normal,” Spector said, noting that highs will hover around the mid 50s while lows could possibly dip into the upper 30s.

The Fresno area will get a break from the rain on Saturday, which will be sunny with a high near 63.

On Saturday night, there’s a 30% chance of rain after 11 p.m. The low will be around 42.

Sunday is also expected to have showers. Otherwise the day will be partly sunny, with a high near 67 and gusts as high as 15 mph.

Rain could continue into Sunday night, which will have a low around 46.

“We’re looking at another weak system on Sunday night and Monday, and these systems are not going to produce as much precipitation,” Spector said. “We’re looking at about a 10th of an inch to a quarter of an inch from these (storm systems).”

Monday will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 60 and wind gusts as high as 15 mph.

“There’s the potential for another storm late next week, but there’s a lot of uncertainty with that one,” Spector said.

Most of California can expect below-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation from March 18 through March 24, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center.

Fresno, CA (April 21, 2025) – A late-night vehicle accident on Highway 41 near O Street in Fresno left one individual injured and hospitalized on Sunday, April 20, 2025. The California Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred around 9:56 PM on the northbound lanes of the highway, just outside the city’s downtown core.

Initial reports did not confirm the number of vehicles involved, but at least one person sustained injuries significant enough to require hospital care. Emergency medical teams were dispatched quickly to the scene and provided initial treatment before transporting the injured individual to a nearby facility. Their current condition has not been disclosed.

The crash temporarily disrupted traffic along this central stretch of Highway 41, a major corridor that cuts through Fresno and links the city to surrounding areas. CHP units remained on the scene into the night to direct traffic and conduct an investigation into the cause of the incident.
