Exciting news just hit the Rochester landscape! An iconic spot that has been under construction is almost ready for visitors.

The past 365+ days, I've been driving by a historic building in Rochester known as "The Avalon" and anxiously waiting for construction to be done. If you missed it, over a year ago, it was announced that this spot at 301 N. Broadway Avenue was turning into "the swankiest venue this city has seen".

Back in December 2023, The Tap House West End announced to the world that they were bringing the 1920s back to the Med City.

They say patience is a virtue....Christmas came early for us- Last week we became the property owners to 301 N Broadway Ave. The gorgeous, historic brick building known in town as The Avalon. Just a LITTLE excited to make this announcement!! It’s been a long time coming, but we are finally ready to book events! There is so much history and love tied to this building and we are so proud of what this space has become. We are now ready to share it with you!

Our space can accommodate groups of any size up to 150ppl. We will have menus available, bar service or simply space rental. We want to be welcoming to all types of events - weddings, business meetings, corporate events, networking events, workshops, holiday parties, showers, reunions, rehearsal dinners - any type of event possible! We are classy but comfortable with an 1920 historical vibe! All Flappers, Gangsters and Bootleggers allowed, snitches prohibited and MOST shenanigans approved! A legendary business that has been part of the Rochester, Minnesota, landscape for over 70+ years is making a huge change. Part of that change includes closing its storefront in the downtown area.

Back in 1946, a store opened up in Rochester at 411 2nd Ave. NW by the Stoppel brothers, Rymond, Fabian, and Erwin. The store name was called Stoppel Feed & Seed and typical farm-related items could be purchased there. Eventually, pet food, pet supplies, lawn and garden items, and supplies for water softeners were also added to the shelves. Customers relied on this store for 28 years until the Stoppels retired in 1974.

In 1974, John Collins purchased the store and it was rebranded to Collins Feed & Seed Center. In 1989, Randy Collins, son of John Collins, took over the well-loved location.

In February 2020, it was announced on KROC News that Jon and Stacie Zimmerman purchased the property with the goal of continuing to sell birdseed and animal food.

Today, the property is once again looking for a new tenant. This time, though, it doesn't appear that the business is for sale.

According to Market Update, Jon Zimmerman indicated that their retail store is evolving. They are moving away from pet food and transitioning into a specialized wild bird feeding service called "We Feed Birds". Because of this change, it also means that the storefront at 411 2nd Ave NW will be closing in 2025. That date has not been announced yet.

Several individuals on social media have asked about the birdseed blends that have become famous throughout the years, which Randy Collins was known for. Thankfully, these products will remain and will be available through a convenient delivery service through We Feed Birds.

Right now, there isn't a new tenant for the Collins Feed & Seed location. However, it is available for lease. If you've been looking to open up a business in the Med City area, this spot offers warehouse space, retail area, and even a loading dock. If you've been over by Trader Joe's in Rochester, Minnesota you've probably noticed a bit of construction going on. It's happening at the former Chuck E Cheese location, but what's going in there?

Our Chuck E Cheese location closed back in 2020. Ever since, it's sat empty. Until now, apparently!

Plenty of great ideas were tossed around for what should go in the old Chuck E Cheese. My favorite was Dave and Buster's. I've only ever been to Dave and Buster's once but honestly, it's like a more whole-family-inclusive Chuck E Cheese. There are things the kids will love doing still but there are also things the adults would love doing.

But Dave and Buster's is not what's going in that spot, sadly. It's not an entertainment business at all, actually. However, it is a store that, if this is true, I'm very excited to see come to Rochester.

There was speculation on the Rochester Reddit about what's going in there, but apparently, based on permits, we're getting a Sierra Trading Post!

Sierra is a branch of the TJMaxx companies, so if you're a fan of TJMaxx, Marshall's, Home Goods, or all three, Sierra is the place for you.

Sierra sells new items but at a cheaper price like all of its sister stores, except Sierra sells outdoor items and clothing.

When I stopped by the location I saw no signs or any indication that that's what's being put there so right now I suppose we could call it a rumor, but if permits have been filed for a Sierra, I'd say it's pretty certain that it's on the way, we just don't know when it'll open yet.

I just had a birthday...and no, I am not telling you how old I am. I can officially say that I was around when Google and Facebook was invented. I even remember trying to go for a run when I was a teenager with my giant, yellow Walkman strapped to my arm. That was practically like adding a weight to my workout.

I'm like about 47% of people when it comes to birthdays - the day has always just been "meh". But a few years ago, someone surprised me. I walked into a room and it was full of decorations that caught me by complete surprise! That was the moment I decided to just think of my day of arriving in this world as an adventure...an adventure of freebies!

My hunt for free stuff on my birthday led me to a bunch of fun surprises!

If coffee is an essential part of your day, there is a brand new coffee shop in Rochester, Minnesota that recently opened that you need to add to your "must try" list.

An area in Southeast Minnesota that was pretty void of any coffee shops for a while had a boom of activity the past few years.

In a short amount of time, the area near Planet Fitness in Rochester saw three new coffee shops pop up.

Coffee Shop #1 - Due North Coffee Co. opened up a custom ice shack in the parking lot of Air Insanity. Just over a year ago, it appeared that this location closed for good.

Coffee Shop #2 - Caribou Cabin opened in the same parking lot as Cub Foods and Planet Fitness.

Coffee Shop #3 - Bad Ass Coffee opened at 1529 Highway 14 East, Suite #100 in May 2022. Sadly, it closed in August 2024.

Thanks to a new shop that has opened in the old Bad Ass Coffee shop, it is getting pretty active again.

I should have noticed that this spot opened up this month since my gym is across the street but...I haven't gone to the gym...in a bit. ???? But my gym bag is in my car and I'll be heading there tomorrow. After I get my workout on, I'll be stopping by the new coffee shop in the area.

Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co. is now open in the old Bad Ass Coffee location at 1529 Highway 14 East, Suite #100.

This coffee company is more than just quality coffee.

Minnesotans love coffee. In fact, our consumption of the caffeinated beverage is almost as high as the coffee addicts in areas like Washington state. And when coffee lovers hear that a new spot is in time, we rush to try the new cups of java.

I've heard a bunch of people talking about a few things on the menu, and if you visit, it sounds like you'll need to splurge at least once and get the Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cup. It's $15.00 but everyone I've talked to says it is well worth the cash.
