Forever 21 to Close Multiple Washington Locations Amid Bankruptcy Filing

Fast-fashion retailer Forever 21 is preparing to shutter nine stores across Washington state as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The closures, which impact locations from Seattle to Spokane, mark a significant contraction for the brand as it struggles with mounting financial pressures.

Affected stores include those at Bellis Fair in Bellingham, Columbia Center in Kennewick, Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, Spokane Valley Mall, Tacoma Mall, Southcenter Mall in Tukwila, Seattle Premium Outlets in Tulalip, Valley Mall in Union Gap, and Vancouver Mall.

The closures come as Forever 21’s parent company, F21 OpCo, seeks a buyer in a court-supervised marketing process. If no buyer emerges, the company will begin an "orderly wind down" of its operations.

“Following the conclusion of our strategic review and after careful deliberation, we made the decision to file for Chapter 11,” said Brad Sell, Chief Financial Officer of F21 OpCo. “We have been unable to find a sustainable path forward, given competition from foreign fast fashion companies… as well as rising costs, economic challenges impacting our core customers, and evolving consumer trends.”

Forever 21, which operates about 380 U.S. stores, has been hit hard by competition from online retailers and shifting consumer preferences. While the company continues searching for a path to survival, Washington shoppers will soon see the fast-fashion giant disappear from their malls.

The news is a blow after recent bankruptcies forced other major retailers to close stores in the state including Big Lots, Party City and Joann.
