Frosted, filled or glazed? 4 new and hidden gem doughnuts to try in the Wilmington area
Allison Ballardhttps://www.starnewsonline.com/story/lifestyle/food/2025/06/06/where-to-get-doughnuts-in-wilmington-nc-carolina-beach-southport/83909733007/

The Wilmington area knows doughnuts. We’ve been blessed with Britt’s Donuts since 1939 for simple, classic fried dough. And close by in Carolina Beach, but on the other end of the doughnut spectrum, are the creative concoctions from Wake n Bake. Other favorites -- like the hand cut pastries at The Donut Inn and the roaming Donut Bus -- are scattered around New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties.
There are also some newer additions to the local doughnut scene and some hidden gems here and there. We thought we’d give a few of them a try. At each of these four doughnut shops, we sampled a simple doughnut as well as a specialty option. Here’s a look. And let us know if you have a favorite doughnut we should try next.
Lil Bitty Donut Co., Southport
This doughnut shop has a unique, miniature take on the treat. The menu also includes ice cream, sundaes, milkshakes, coffee drinks and hot chocolates. They opened at 4961 Old Long Beach Road S.E. in Southport earlier in 2025. (There is also a Wilmington location of this shop at 260 Racine Drive, but it is temporarily closed.)
The doughnuts are cake-based, rather than made with yeasted dough. Because they’re served fresh and warm, they are soft and pillowy. The owners said a few people complain that they only come in miniature size, but they have been a hit -- especially in orders of three or six mix-and-match flavors. There 20 regular flavors, as well as a handful of seasonal options.
The most popular are Boston Cream, which comes with a small custardy dollop in the center, and the French Toast, with a maple glaze. But even the plain was sweet and lovely -- and my favorite of the bunch.
Beach Break Donuts & Ice Cream, Carolina Beach
This spot at 1009 N. Lake Park Blvd. is new to the Carolina Beach food scene as of April 2025. Those in Brunswick County, though, have been enjoying them much longer at the sister business, OKI Scoop Shop & Donuts in Oak Island. The menu includes made-to-order doughnuts, ice cream and coffee.
The base at Beach Break is a cake-style batter. For those used to a fluffier doughnut, the flatter shape may seem odd. But when it comes fresh from the fryer, it does mean there is a good ratio of crispy, fried exterior to enjoy. Think of it as thin and crispy. Ordering is done by filling out a ticket. There are 21 choices for specialty doughnuts like the S’mores or the Beach Break Strawberry.
But the menu also allows for customizing doughnuts with glazes, toppings and swizzles. In addition to the Plain Jane, I ordered one with peanuts, chocolate chips and a chocolate swizzle. It was my favorite of the day.
Brooklyn Cafe, Wilmington
This coffee shop at 706 N. Fourth St. in Wilmington’s Brooklyn Arts District isn’t new. But the owners, Tara English and Rodney and Marilyn Robbins, are planning to open a new location in the Skyline Center. The Skyline Cafe will host a ribbon cutting on June 17 at 929 N. Front St.
It will likely introduce a new audience to head baker Brenda Davis’ house-made goodies, such as beignets, biscotti and kolaches. The Ollie’s Donuts on the menu are an old-fashioned style made enhanced with mashed potato, and subtle flavors.
The size is thick and small, with a dense interior. It's a good size for the heartiness of the doughnut -- satisfying and substantial. They make several versions daily. The vanilla, with a sweet glaze, is the standard. My favorite, though, was the lemon made with a tart glaze studded with zest.
Bagel King & Donuts, Wilmington
This breakfast restaurant isn't new, but has developed a following at its north Wilmington location for the bagels, sandwiches muffins and other baked goods, including the churro cheesecake. But, yes, the doughnuts are popular, too.
There's a larger selection on the weekends, but even during a weekday service you'll likely see a few glazed varieties, jelly filled, and the cinnamon sugar (which is a favorite at the shop). There are also a few doughnut adjacent treats like oversized apple fritters. cinnamon rolls, and fruit-topped pastries.
I tried a couple that were large and fluffy made with a yeasted dough. They're not typically served hot from the fryer but were obviously fresh. And tasty. I also liked that they weren't too sweet.

These 10 birds make the Wilmington area their home throughout the year

If you're walking or strolling about in your neighborhood or just sitting and relaxing in your backyard you most lightly have spotted birds.
In the Wilmington area there are many birds to see year-round. These birds can be spotted in your neighborhood, yard or local park.
"There are some species that are here just during the winter, others are here just for the spring and summer, and more still will pass through briefly during migration," according to Evangelyn Buckland, co-founder and managing director of the Cape Fear Bird Observatory.
Here is a list of the 10 common backyard birds (in no particular order) in the Wilmington area that are here year-round.
Blue Jay
Blue Jays are highly intelligent and known to mimic hawk calls to scare off other birds and protect their territory or food sources.
Carolina Chickadee
Carolina Chickadee can remember hundreds of places where they've hidden food — a great memory for a small brain.
Carolina Wren
This tiny bird belts out a loud "tea-kettle, tea-kettle" song that can be heard across your yard, even though the bird itself often stays hidden.
Eastern Bluebird
Eastern Bluebirds readily use nest boxes, making them a conservation success story thanks to bluebird trails across North Carolina.
Mourning Dove
The mournful call isn't the only sound they make — their wings create a whistling noise when they take off, often startling predators.
Northern Cardinal
The bright red male is easily spotted year-round, and both males and females sing — a rare trait among North American songbirds.
Northern Mockingbird
Northern Mockingbirds can imitate other birds, frogs, and even mechanical sounds — sometimes incorporating up to 200 different tunes into their songbook.
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Though named for its belly, the red head is what really stands out — and it's a common visitor to suet feeders.
House Finch
The red color on House finch males comes from pigments in their food — brighter males often have better diets and attract more mates.
Tufted Titmouse
Tufted Titmouse are lively birds that often travel in mixed flocks and may grab seeds one at a time to crack open on a nearby perch.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a low pressure that could impact the North Carolina coast.
As of Tuesday, June 3, a non-tropical area of low pressure is forecast to form near or offshore of the southeastern U.S. coast along a frontal boundary during the next couple of days.
It has a 10 percent chance of formation in the next 48 hours, as well as the next seven days, according to the National Hurricane Center's 2 p.m. Tuesday update.
The low is forecast to move east of North Carolina over the Atlantic Ocean by late Friday or Saturday.
If the low remains offshore, it could gradually develop some subtropical or tropical characteristics later this week while moving northeastward at 10 to 15 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
What to expect in the Wilmington area
It's still unclear how it will impact the Cape Fear region.
If it stays offshore and gains subtropical or tropical characteristics, then there's a risk of rip currents and small craft advisories.
Environmental conditions appear only marginally conducive for the low to gradually develop some subtropical or tropical characteristics later this week if it forms or moves offshore the coast.
The National Hurricane Center also is monitoring a tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic. It's moving west at 11 mph.
"While the risk of development is low, impacts such as heavy, flooding rain that can disrupt outdoor plans, minor coastal flooding, rip currents and rough surf are all possible mid-to-late week," according to AccuWeather's outlook.
Here's the forecast for the next few days from the National Weather Service in Wilmington:
Are you prepared for a hurricane?
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. Even if this system won't pose a threat to the NC coast, it's never too early to be prepared.
When is the peak of hurricane season?
The peak of the season is Sept. 10, with the most activity happening between mid-August and mid-October, according to the Hurricane Center.

A low pressure system has the potential to bring significant rainfall to the Wilmington area over the next couple of days, but tropical development is not expected, according to the National Hurricane Center.
By Wednesday afternoon, showers and thunderstorms were moving across the Florida peninsula, parts of Georgia and South Carolina. Some parts of Charleston, SC, had already received up to an inch of rain.
"Periods of heavy rain are possible tonight through late Thursday," according to a report from the National Weather Service in Wilmington. "Heavy rainfall could cause some flash flooding along portions of the southeastern U.S. coast today and on Thursday."
What to expect in the Wilmington area
The greatest impact to the Wilmington area is likely to be several inches of rain. The area could see 1 to 3 inches of rain across most areas, with the highest toward the coast, according to the weather service. There's also a 10% to 20% chance that the Grand Strand area will see 3-4 inches.
Here's the forecast for the next few days from the National Weather Service in Wilmington:
In addition, the National Weather Service in Wilmington says there is a moderate risk of rip currents through the weekend.
What is a rip current?
According to the U.S. Lifesaving Association, rip currents are channelized currents of water flowing away from shore at surf beaches. Often these currents move swimmers far from shore before they realize it, taking them into deeper water. This can cause fear and distress as the swimmers attempt to make it back to shore.
Rip currents can be difficult to spot, but beachgoers should look for water that is darker in color, choppy and leaves a break in the incoming wave pattern. They form at low spots or breaks in sandbars, piling up water between the breaking waves and the beach. The water returns to sea through the rip current. Another clue may be a line of foam, seaweed or debris moving seaward.
If you find yourself caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current.
While it may be difficult to do, the U.S. Lifesaving Association says swimmers should "relax," noting the rip current will not pull them under. Swimmers should try swimming out of the current in a direction following the shoreline, or toward breaking waves, then at an angle toward the beach.
The U.S. Lifesaving Association notes if the current circulates back toward the shore, floating or treading water may be a good way to get out of the current.
Finally, if you feel you are unable to reach shore, draw attention to yourself by yelling for help and waving to those on the shore.
