YUMA, Ariz. — Yuma will soon be the home of an Amazon facility at 36th Street and South Avenue 4E, as confirmed by Bobby Wuertz of Land Advisors, who brokered the sale of the 17 acres of former farmland.

“(Amazon) liked the story of Yuma,” Wuertz said about why Amazon entered the picture. “Yuma is so close to transportation. We got Interstate 8 right there. There’s a trained workforce and availability of land.”

YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — The U.S. is tightening immigration rules, affecting Canadian travelers.

Typically, Canadians are allowed to stay in the U.S. for up to six months without a visa.

However, a new enforcement measure, introduced through an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on his first day in office, enforces the Immigration and Nationality Act. It mandates that all foreign nationals aged 14 and older register with the U.S. immigration services if staying longer than 30 days. Some will even be required to submit fingerprints.

The new rule is drawing mixed reactions from the Yuma Canadian snowbird community. “Oh, I won’t be back next year, no,” said Bruce Henry, a Canadian citizen.

Henry said the U.S. government’s recent actions have not felt very neighborly. “It’s just not what you do; it’s like burning your neighbor’s house down,” said Henry.

After years of spending his winters in Arizona, Henry said he will be taking a break from the U.S. next year. “We’re going to do other things and we’re going to do them in other places.”

Nearly 1 million Canadians visit Arizona each year, contributing significantly to the state’s economy, but this could now be affected. “I’ve talked to folks who have tried to put their property on sale to make sure they don’t come back,” said Norm Duquette, a Canadian snowbird.

Duquette said he doesn’t mind completing the so-called Alien Registration Requirement. “If I’m playing in someone’s yard, they want to know who I am, why I’m there and how long I’m there for, it makes sense,” said Duquette.

Foreign nationals can register by creating an account online with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and submitting a form. The new rule is set to take effect on April 11.

How gas prices have changed in Yuma in the last week

Gasoline prices have increased by just a few cents compared to this time last month, but the cost to fill up the tank has declined by nearly 40 cents per gallon since last year. The national average fuel price is about $3.16, with Lubbock, Texas, seeing the cheapest metro-area prices at $2.62 and Lihue, Hawaii, with the most expensive at $5.12.

After a monthlong pause on tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, the Trump administration proceeded at the beginning of March to impose 25% tariffs on the two neighboring nations, including a limited 10% tariff on Canadian energy. However, on March 6, the president announced a pause on tariffs until April 2.

GasBuddy projects states in the Northeast could see the most significant spike in fuel prices as a result of potential tariffs, possibly by 20 to 40 cents per gallon, as this region relies heavily on Canada's New Brunswick refinery.

Meanwhile, by April, gas prices may decrease as a result of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries' plans to boost crude production. This increased output, however, is just one of several factors influencing prices in the month ahead.

"While OPEC has signaled its intent to stabilize the market, policy decisions from the White House could introduce further uncertainty, making it difficult to predict where prices will head next," GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said in a statement this month. "However, nearly every year sees a seasonal spring increase, which could eventually push prices higher ahead of summer."

Thousands of foreign workers on H2A Visas come to the Yuma Valley every winter. Farmers say without them, the produce would never make it to our grocery store shelves.

YUMA, AZ — Long growing seasons, access to the Colorado River, and abundant sunlight all contribute to Yuma’s agricultural advantage. However, the crops don’t grow and get harvested on their own; access to labor south of the border also gives Yuma a leg up in the agriculture industry.

In a celery field in Yuma, just a few hundred feet away from the southern border, dozens of Mexican farm workers work to harvest the vegetables that will be on grocery store shelves in a couple of days. While Yuma has faced immigration issues, it also relies on migrant farm workers to power its local agriculture economy.

"It’s difficult work," Jose Aguilera, a farmworker, said. "You have to be strong to come and work the 10-12 hours every day.”

Working on the line, Alfonso Urena has been a farm worker for nearly a decade. He spends his days in these fields and then returns to Mexico at night to his wife and kids in San Luis Rio Colorado.

"We have to work as hard as we can, when we can, so that our families can live better," Urena said.

In all his years in the fields, he says he has never picked produce alongside an American worker.

“You can’t bring in H2A unless you can prove you can’t find domestic help,” Matt McGuire said. McGuire has been farming in the Yuma Valley for decades as the Chief Agriculture Officer for JV Smith Farms.

This is how Urena and the thousands of other migrant farm workers are here in Yuma. They're all working legally, making a minimum of $17 an hour, under an H2A Visa.

The visa allows Yuma farmers to hire temporary foreign workers to work in their fields when they can’t find Americans who want to do the job.

“The H2A worker, especially on the harvest side, is what makes it all possible," McGuire said.

Still, farming along the border isn’t easy. In Yuma during the peak of the local border crisis, migrants frequently were walking through fields after illegally crossing the border. The issues broke food safety protocols and hurt farmers' bottom lines.

"Think of it this way, I don’t think you would want me walking on top of your kitchen table," McGuire said. "They trample the crop, it hurts the yield, and the cost goes up."

Still, he says the benefits of being in the Yuma Valley far outweigh the challenges.

“We work hard to get people their vegetables. We keep costs as low as we can, and we take a lot of pride in what we produce and what we put out there," McGuire said.

Back in the celery field, the day's work continues. Amid the illegal immigration crackdown happening in the country, this legal work happening in Yuma’s produce fields so far goes on uninterrupted.

“Being here working legally is what we want. We are not doing anything wrong. We are here and work, and when the season is over, we are going back to Mexico," Urena said.

YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — The U.S. Border Patrol Yuma Sector reported just one apprehension on Tuesday, as apprehensions at the southern border hit their lowest levels in years.

Before President Donald Trump took office, Yuma saw around 40 apprehensions a day, but now, that number is almost zero.

One of the biggest changes along the Yuma border is the removal of a tent and portable toilets that were once used by asylum seekers.

They were positioned in a location where migrants typically cross into the U.S. through a gap in the border and then surrender to Border Patrol.

“We simply don’t have the need for that resource anymore,” said Yuma Border Patrol Chief Justin De La Torre.

De La Torre said agents have been shifting their focus.

“Agents are able to spend their time looking for threats, looking for any violations of federal law,” he said. “If we have a day where there are zero detections of illegal entries, that’s a very good thing.”

In February, U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions along the southern border fell to 8,300, a sharp decline from 189,900 in the same month last year; it’s a 95% decrease that De La Torre attributes to President Trump’s termination of catch and release.

“In the past, we were releasing them pending a court hearing. Now we are using the expedited proceedings to return them,” said De La Torre.

One of Trump’s biggest campaign promises was to stop the flow of fentanyl across the southern border by threatening tariffs on Mexico as soon as he took office if they failed to take action.

“The leadership in Washington, D.C. has been able to influence other countries to accept their nationals back, that hasn’t always been the case,” said De La Torre.

In terms of border security, De La Torre believes the U.S. is moving in the right direction.

“Border security in Yuma, the city of Yuma, Yuma County, it impacts the entire country,” he said.

He said most undocumented individuals who enter the U.S. through Yuma are headed north to the interior of the country.

“We have a number of lawful pathways for people to come to the United States. If people want to come here and work, there’s a mechanism to do that. We want them to do that legally,” he said.

Those pathways that De La Torre is referring to are through employment-based visas like the H-2A visa, which allows farm workers to work in the U.S.

Currently, there is no legal pathway for migrants at the bord to seek asylum.
