The Brief

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - A historic warbird landed at the Phoenix Goodyear Airport on Monday afternoon.

What we know:

This B-29 Superfortress is known as the DOC, and it flew in from Abilene, Texas.

It will be in the Valley for a few days for the public to see, and you can even take a tour of the inside.

This B-29 is one of over 1,600 B-29 bombers built in Wichita, Kansas during World War II. DOC is one of two B-29 Superfortresses still flying worldwide.

DOC's Friends, a nonprofit, is honoring the men and women who designed and built it, maintained it, and flew this aircraft during World War II by touring the U.S. and sharing its story.

"Because of the long legs, this plane can fly over 3,000 miles. It was sent to the south Pacific, and they're flying out of Guam, Tinian and Saipan, which is about a thousand miles from Japan. Flies about 200 miles an hour, a little over," Mark Novak, DOC's Chief Pilot said.

Novak, once an Air Force pilot, has been the DOC's chief pilot since 2016.

"The B-29 at the time was the most advanced aircraft in the U.S. arsenal. It could fly above 30,000 feet. It was pressurized compared to a B-17. It could fly twice as far and carry three times the bomb," Novak explained.

Novak says just under 4,000 B-29's were built at four different factories across the country.

Historic B-29 parks at Arizona airport for tours

"This aircraft served on active duty from ‘45 to ’56. The Air Force gave the Navy 250 of these in 1956 to use as targets," he said.

The aircraft spent decades untouched in the Mojave Desert until DOC's Friends chose to restore and fly it.

"Spent 40 years, 44 years in the desert. Our group spent 16 years restoring her in Wichita. Now, we've been flying her since 2016," he explained.

You may be wondering how DOC got its name. Think Disney.

"The squadron commander said, 'We have eight airplanes. We're going to be the Snow White squadron.' So, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. DOC's little dwarf brother is down the road at the Pima Museum, and that's Dopey down there," he said.

What's next:

DOC's Friends fly 140 hours a year. They spend about six months touring the country.

During the winter, they focus on aircraft maintenance.

The B-29 will be open to the public from April 23-27. There will even be flights on Saturday and Sunday.

Next, the B-29 will head to Palm Springs, California.

'Every kid's got talent': Alice Cooper wants to help unleash their inner rock stars

The last time Alice Cooper rocked an Arizona stage, on Saturday, April 26, it was to lead a group of teachers from his Solid Rock Teen Centers in a handful of his greatest hits at a grand opening celebration for a new teen center in Goodyear.

“It’s so amazing,” Cooper says. “I hope we have this conversation about 10 more times.”

The new teen center, on the former site of the Goodyear Branch Library on Van Buren Street west of Litchfield Road, has been offering free after-school programs in music, dance and arts to students ages 12 to 20 for a few months.

“We did a soft opening and we're already doing really well,” Cooper says.

How Goodyear came to host the third Solid Rock Teen Center

The original Solid Rock Teen Center opened in 2012 on the southeastern corner of Thunderbird Road and 32nd Street in Phoenix, built in partnership with Genesis Church and Cooper's Solid Rock Foundation after more than a decade of fundraising efforts, including Alice Cooper’s Christmas Pudding and a spring fundraiser now called Coopstock.

The legendary rocker and his wife, Sheryl Cooper, worked with Mesa Public Schools to expand the concept into a second location, a 12,000-square-foot former elementary school at 122 N. Country Club Drive in downtown Mesa, in 2021.

When it came time to expand the concept even further, Cooper says, “We were looking around Glendale and Goodyear, that area, when the Goodyear mayor said, 'We have something over here that you might really like.' It looked like a brand new building, which was really amazing. When I drove up, I went, 'Oh, this can't be it.’”

Working closely with Goodyear, Solid Rock transformed the library to suit the center’s needs, partitioning it out into rehearsal rooms, offices, a social room, a recording studio and so on.

Longtime supporter Joe Norelli and his wife, Judy, donated $1 million toward the building of the Goodyear center.

As Cooper recalls, “Joe kind of stepped up and said, ‘How much do these things usually cost?' We told him, and he said, 'OK, let's go.'”

Cooper laughs at the memory, then adds, “It's great when you get those guys that are really committed to the idea and have the means.”

Alice Cooper: 'Every kid's got talent; you just have to find it'

Once a new center is ready to open, it’s pretty much an “If you build it, they will come” scenario.

“You know, a lot of it, of course, is the internet,” Cooper says. “And I think a lot of it is word of mouth. A kid goes to school and says, 'Hey, I'm learning guitar over at the Rock.' Another kid goes, 'Well, I want to learn drums but can't afford a drum teacher.' 'Well, this is free.'”

As Cooper sees it, "Every kid's got talent; you just have to find it. We tell kids when they come in, 'Try absolutely everything and see what lands. Sometimes, you find a kid that's a natural guitar player or a natural drummer. Some of these kids don't have any musical ability, but they can walk into a studio and run ProTools. I tell these kids, 'Do you know what a ProTools guy makes in Los Angeles or New York? He's in six figures every year.’”

Alice Cooper's Solid Rock Teen Centers offer an alternative

The goal of Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Centers is to offer kids a fun alternative to finding trouble to get into after school.

“Most teenagers' worst enemy is too much time on their hands,” Cooper says.

“Unless you're involved in sports or something else after school, you're sitting around, you did your homework, now what are you gonna do? And usually what's on the street is not the best thing in the world for you. So we just said, 'Why not open a place where a kid that can't afford a guitar lesson or a drum lesson, well, this is free? Come on in.'”

He’s not expecting every kid who wanders into Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Centers to go on to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame like he did.

“You know, a lot of them will not go on to be musicians,” Cooper says. “But they might have avoided something, a train wreck in their life, had they been out on the street.”

He and Sheryl have spent enough time at these centers to see how excited the kids are to come in and learn after school.

“I never felt that way about algebra,” Cooper says, with a laugh.

Even the Earwigs would've 'moved along a lot quicker' with help

Has he ever thought about what having someplace like these Solid Rock Teen Centers would’ve meant for him and his friends in the Earwigs back when they were learning how to rock ‘n’ roll inside the Cortez High School cafetorium in the ‘60s?

“We would have moved along a lot quicker, but the journey for us was the most fun,” he says.

“In fact, I'm working on a book right now about those days, and it's really fun to go back and remember some of the insanity and the fact that you'd finish school, you'd go to cross country practice and then you'd rehearse in somebody's living room for four hours. And you didn't have time to do homework, so your girlfriend did the homework.”

Cooper laughs at the memory, adding, “Those were great days.”

Ideally, Cooper says, he’d love to see his Solid Rock Teen Center concept keep expanding at its own pace. He’s always thought Tucson could use one, mentioning Flagstaff, Prescott, east Mesa and Glendale as other possibilities.

“I have friends that are in different big organizations,” Cooper says. “They say, 'Well, we would have had 10 of those open by now.' I say, 'Well, yeah, maybe. But we're a different breed over here. We really care about how good it is, not how many there are.' It’ll grow at its own pace. But pretty soon, I'd love to fill the state with them.”

The center focuses on growing one's passion for the performing arts

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Goodyear is ready to rock and roll with the Grand Opening of a new center for teens.

Alice Cooper's 'Solid Rock' is the first of its kind in the West Valley. It focuses on the arts, and once you walk into the center, you'll quickly see that there's no place like it.

"Everything about this place is community," Alice Cooper said. "Every kid has talent, you just need to find it."

On any given day, children between the ages of 12 and 20 are invited to the center to grow their love for the performing arts. They can play instruments, dance, paint, sing, or produce music at the center. Classes are also offered for anyone interested in a variety of topics.

"This is their place," he said. "This is their clubhouse. This is where they can hang out and be safe. We also have a recording studio in here, so a guitar player will find a bass player who will find a drummer and singer. They'll write some songs, and they can go in and record them. This is an all-purpose place."

It's a place that also provides everything needed for the student. Cooper says all anyone needs to bring with them is passion.

"You must be a teenager between the ages of 12-20 years old," Sheryl Cooper said. "That's it. You have to open the door and walk in."

"Everything you need is here already, pianos, drums, bass, guitars, art classes, video classes, dance," Alice Cooper said. "There are a couple of guitar players I'd put in my band right now, they're that good."

The center is Alice Cooper's third Arizona location and first in the West Valley. The goal is to provide an inclusive space where artists can grow without having to worry about costs.

"That's because we realize a lot of kids have a lot of talent," Cooper said. "But they can't take it any further because they can't afford it. Well, this is all free and we have the best teachers around."

Even ones that could be unexpected.

"We've had Rob Halford come in, John 5," Sheryl said. "You never know what to expect."

"Johnny Depp said put in a black box theater and I'll come teach improv," Cooper said.

There's no pressure on the kids, it's just about having fun. It gives them the chance to live their dreams, create their own, and sometimes turn them into reality.

"Teen centers normally suggest a room center with a pool table," Sheryl said. "This is a mini Juilliard and the standard of training is excellent, and it's so much fun."

The City of Goodyear said it is excited to welcome the new addition to the area.

"We’re absolutely thrilled to officially welcome Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Center to Goodyear," said Mayor Joe Pizzillo. "It’s a place where young people can discover their passion, express themselves creatively, and find a positive path forward. Thank you to Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock team and city staff for bringing such a quality amenity to the city."

A Grand Opening event is taking place Saturday, April 26th, 2025. Everyone is welcome from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 14455 W Van Buren St Ste 101 in Goodyear. Kids can also check out the website for all the information, including upcoming classes.
